The veteran guard's 15 three-point tries were the most in the competition this season
Jaleen Smith stopped Trefl's comeback
When Bahcesehir College Istanbul defeated Trefl Sopot 79-67 at home in Round 6 on Wednesday, it was Jaleen Smith who stepped up in the most critical moment.
Smith finished the game with 22 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists. He made 5 of 15 three-pointers. His 15 three-point shot attempts were by far a EuroCup season-high. Derek Needham of Besiktas Fibabanka Istanbul had set this season's record with 12 three-point attempts against Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius last night. Michael Watson owns the all-time record with 21 three-point attempts playing for Deichmann Slask Wroclaw in a 90-87 home win against Pompea Napoli on November 30, 2004.
"I didn't shoot the ball well tonight. I feel like I was forcing it a little bit, but they gave me the open shots and I just took them tonight," Smith said after the game. "We just found the way to win."
Smith was off-target early, but buried the most critical shots at the right time. After a balanced first quarter, Bahcesehir took off and built a 43-27 lead at halftime. Tai Odiase boosted the margin to 47-28 soon after the break but a wild 2-18 run brought Trefl within 49-46 late in the third quarter. That's when Smith stepped up to make sure Bahecsehir stayed out of trouble for good.
He banked in a three-point play while being fouled almost at the end of the third quarter, hitting the and-one free throw to complete a four-point play opportunity. Smith buried two more shots from beyond the arc early in the fourth quarter to establish a 61-48 Bahcesehir margin. He had 10 points in a 12-2 run that gave his team full control of the game until the final buzzer.
After three seasons in the EuroLeague, Smith is proving his value in the BKT EuroCup, averaging 13.8 points per game and boosting that average up to 21.0 points in the last two games. Above all, Bahcesehir is 5-1 this season after being 2-8 in the 2020-21 campaign, its only previous experience in the competition, and plays five of its next six games in Istanbul.
