Mike Tobey is back in Spain with Gran Canaria
Dreamland Gran Canaria has reinforced its frontline with a former champion by signing Mike Tobey for the coming season.
Tobey (2.13 meters, 29 years old) arrives from Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, where he averaged 3.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.4 blocks over 10:56 minutes in 30 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season.
The veteran center helped Zvezda to a domestic triple crown by winning the ABA League, Serbian League and Serbian Cup.
Tobey his professional debut with the Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte Hornets' G League affiliate, during the 2016-17 season. He also played briefly for the Hornets before finishing the campaign with Valencia Basket in Spain. Despite only joining in March 2017, Tobey ended up securing himself a Spanish League winners' medal just a few months later.
He spent the 2017-18 season with fellow Spanish side Tenerife, after which he returned to Valencia in the summer of 2018 and spent the next four years there. Tobey became a EuroCup champion with the team in 2019 and played his first two EuroLeague seasons in a Valencia uniform. His next stop was FC Barcelona, with which he reached the 2023 EuroLeague Final Four.
Tobey has also acquired Slovenian citizenship and helped the Slovenian national team reach the semifinals at the 2020 Olympic Games and the quarterfinals at EuroBasket 2022. He has earned plenty of recognition at the international level for his play with Slovenia's star point guard, Luka Doncic.
