### Denis stepped up for Paris 

Paris Basketball had to overcome a number of absences to beat Slask Wroclaw [89-85](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/paris-basketball-slask-wroclaw/U2022/159/) at home in Round 16 of the 2022-23 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season. Gauthier Denis was one of the players that stepped up on a night when Paris needed its role players to come to the fore. He played almost 30 minutes and finished the game with personal-best marks of 17 points and a PIR of 20. Denis buried 3-of-7 three-point shots and went 6-for-6 on free throws, while he also added 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 5 fouls drawn. His all-round performance allowed Paris to grab its 10th win in Group B.

### Granger filled veteran role

Umana Reyer Venice stayed in the fight to be second in Group A following a [73-89](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/frutti-extra-bursaspor-umana-reyer-venice/U2022/154/) win against Frutti Exra Bursaspor at Tofas Spor Salonu. Jayson Granger knew it was time for him to take over, as Reyer's other playmaker, Marco Spissu, was unavailable. The experienced Granger spent over 37 minutes on the floor and was able to amass 18 points, 5 rebounds, a season-best 8 assists, 1 steal and as many as 8 fouls drawn. All that allowed Granger to amass a PIR of 29, a new career high.

### Balvin dominated in the paint

Prometey Slobozhanske secured a top-two finish in Group A by topping Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse [96-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/prometey-slobozhanske-mincidelice-jl-bourg-en-bresse/U2022/152/) at Arena Riga on Wednesday. Ondrej Balvin was a dominant force in the paint and helped Prometey get its ninth consecutive victory. Balvin had really solid numbers, getting 16 points, his best scoring night since late December, on 5-of-7 two-pointers and 6-of-8 free throws. He added 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 5 fouls drawn for a PIR of 22.

### Shurna made it rain 

Gran Canaria took a giant step towards finishing the EuroCup Regular Season with the best overall record by downing Turk Telekom Ankara [89-79](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/gran-canaria-turk-telekom-ankara/U2022/156/) to improve to a competition-best 13-3 in the standings. John Shurna hit shots from every angle, finishing this critical showdown with 20 points on 3-of-4 two-pointers and 3-of-5 three-pointers. He added 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and 4 fouls drawn for a team-high PIR of 23, his best mark this season.

### Zugic showcased his obvious potential

Fedor Zugic is a name that many EuroCup fans will already be familiar with, but the 19-year-old reminded everyone just why he is one of the brightest prospects in Europe with a season-high 21-point showing in ratiopharm Ulm's [97-85](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/ratiopharm-ulm-cedevita-olimpija-ljubljana/U2022/151/) win against Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana. Prior to Wednesday night's action in Round 16, Zugic had only reached double digits on two occasions this season, having had 18 points in Round 1 and 11 in Round 8. His 21 points are not the most in his young career, though, as his career-best mark came against Gran Canaria in Round 15 of the 2021-22 season, when he scored 22 points.

### Tokoto set Hapoel up for comeback

When Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv is in action, several players tend to catch the eyes of fans, most notably J'Covan Brown, Xavier Munford, Jordan McRae and Chinanu Onuaku. Yet, one player who tends to play a crucial role in the shadows is JP Tokoto, who had his first-ever double-double in the EuroCup in Round 16, as Hapoel defeated Veolia Towers Hamburg [91-85](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/hapoel-vegan-friendly-tel-aviv-veolia-towers-hamburg/U2022/158/). Tokoto finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but his first-quarter contribution of 8 points and 5 rebounds came at a point when Hamburg was dominating the glass and scoring at ease. Without Tokoto's stat line inside the opening 10 minutes, a quarter Hapoel lost 26-29, the team would have had an even harder time trying to mount a comeback.

### Lockett caused nightmares for Buducnost

Dolomiti Energia Trento grabbed a crucial [79-76](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/dolomiti-energia-trento-buducnost-voli-podgorica/U2022/157/) victory against Buducnost VOLI Podgorica in Round 16 that kept its playoff hopes alive, and one player who was integral in the win was guard Trent Lockett. In a complete display that saw him record 9 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists, the 32-year-old also had a career-best 5 steals. Lockett's activity on the defensive end of the floor wreaked havoc, as he beat his previous best mark of 4 steals, which he achieved on one occasion in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, respectively.

[D.J. Stephens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/dj-stephens/005982/) of Prometey was the leading scorer in Round 16, netting 28 points in his team's 96-82 win against Bourg. [Yogi Ferrell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/yogi-ferrell/011281/) of Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana is the EuroCup's top scorer at 19.2 points per game. 

U-BT Cluj-Napoca center [Emanuel Cate](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/emanuel-cate/005373/) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in this round as his side fell 104-81 at Joventut Badalona. The leading rebounder in this year's EuroCup is Buducnost VOLI Podgorica's [Alpha Kaba](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/alpha-kaba/007855/), who brings in 10.9 per night. 

Round 16 MVP [Anthony Cowan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/anthony-cowan/012003/) dished a round-high 11 assists in Promitheas's victory at London. [J'Covan Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/j-covan-brown/011991/) of Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv is the EuroCup leader for assists with 7.0 per contest. 

A couple of players set new career highs for steals in this round, with [Leonardo Meindl](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/leonardo-meindl/011800/) of Cluj and [Trent Lockett](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/trent-lockett/006383/) of Dolomiti Energia Trento recording 5 apiece. Overall, [Jeremiah Martin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jeremiah-martin/011899/) of Slask leads the way with 2.6 steals per game. 

Cedevita center [Karlo Matkovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/karlo-matkovic/009395/), Hapoel rim protector [Chinanu Onuaku](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/chinanu-onuaku-/012076/) and Germani Brescia big man [Tai Odiase](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/tai-odiase/011823/) all blocked 3 shots, the most in Round 16. Onuaku is now tied with [Ismael Kamagate](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/ismael-kamagate/011926/) of Paris as the EuroCup's best shot blocker at 1.7 per night.

[Anthony Cowan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/anthony-cowan/012003/) of Promitheas Patras has earned MVP of the Round honors in Round 16 of the 2022-23 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season after finishing with a career-high 34 PIR in his team's 89-93 road win at the London Lions.

The 25-year-old Cowan enjoyed a career night at Copper Box Arena, setting new personal highs en route to a 26-point, 11-assist double-double, his first in 16 EuroCup appearances. Although Cowan was a modest 2-of-6 from two-point range, he was particularly effective from three-point land and the free-throw line, going 5-of-7 and 7-of-8, respectively. After reaching the 11-assist mark in the third quarter, Cowan scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to ensure that his team left with the victory. On the night, he also grabbed 4 rebounds, had 2 steals and drew 6 fouls.

The second-highest PIR in Round 16 belongs to [Jeremy Evans](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jeremy-evans/007432/) of Paris Basketball, as he had a PIR of 33 in his side's 89-85 triumph against Slask Wroclaw. Evans led an undermanned Paris side on the night, recording an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, along with 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocks and 4 fouls drawn. [Jayson Granger](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jayson-granger/003024/) of Umana Reyer Venice rounds out the top three after recording a 29 PIR as his side's 73-89 win at Frutti Extra Bursaspor. The guard scored 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, provided 8 assists, had 1 steal and was fouled 8 times.[ D.J. Umana Reyer Venice continued its positive momentum heading into the final stretch of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season after securing an important 73-89 victory at Frutti Extra Bursaspor on Wednesday evening. Reyer took control with a 9-26 fourth quarter to snap a four-game road losing streak and improve to 9-7 in Group A, while new head coach Neven Spahija has overseen two straight victories since taking over. Bursaspor, meanwhile, dropped its second game in a row and its fifth in the last six for a 7-9 mark.

Bourg, who has already qualified to the playoffs, dropped to 8-8 and has lost its last five games.

ratiopharm Ulm bounced back from its home loss against Prometey Slobozhanske by defeating the visiting Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 97-85 at ratiopharm arena on Wednesday evening. A 13-0 run early in the second period allowed Ulm to escape with a 53-41 lead at halftime, and even though Cedevita got within 55-53 early in the third, another great offensive display from the host boosted it to a solid margin that the visitor could never overturn. Ulm improved to 9-7 to remain in the fight for home-court advantage in the playoffs, while already-eliminated Cedevita dropped to 3-13.

Promitheas Patras boosted its hopes of gaining home-court advantage in the 7DAYS EuroCup Playoffs after an impressive 89-93 win at the London Lions on Wednesday, with the Greek side’s playmaker Anthony Cowan lighting up the spectacular clash with career-highs of 26 points and 11 assists for a career-best PIR of 34. The outcome lifted Patras to 10-6 while the Lions, who are also assured of a playoff berth, dropped to 7-9 as they threw away a 10-point lead they built in the first quarter after the visitor turned the game on its head with a 20-2 run in the third period.

Gran Canaria saw a 21-point lead cut to 6 before prevailing and improving to 13-3, including 8-0 at home and nine wins in the last 10 games. Turk Telekom saw its three-game winning streak snapped, as it dropped to 11-5 and fell two games behind Gran Canaria.

The 7DAYS EuroCup Group B clash between the London Lions and Promitheas Patras on Wednesday night produced a superb contest at Copper Box Arena, with Anthony Cowan stealing the show to help the visiting Greek side grab an 89-93 road win in a spectacular atmosphere.

Cowan registered personal bests of 26 points and 11 assists, as he helped spark a second-half comeback by Promitheas which forced London into submission in front of a passionate home crowd, whose enthusiasm suggested that basketball could be making strides in Great Britain.

With Promitheas trailing 50-48 at halftime, Cowan turned on the heat in the third quarter as the visiting side went on a 20-2 run when it was 55-51 down, taking the lead for good and fending off a spirited London fightback in the final 10 minutes.

Visiting coach Ioannis Christopoulos was full of praise for the 25-year old point guard from Maryland, who mixed superb long-range shooting with incisive drives to the basket, resulting in either easy layups or open shots for his teammates.

“He brings a winning spirit and a lot of heart,” Christopoulos said during the post-game press conference. “He is a great character and he learns the game every day. He is still a young guard and he will only become better and better.”

The Promitheas coach also praised the impressive atmosphere at Copper Box Arena: “It’s a great place. London is growing as an organization and, as a basketball person, I am happy to see that.”

London tactician Ryan Schmidt was just as impressed with the turnout at the venue and said that he was confident the team’s steady progress in its maiden EuroCup season would generate long-term popularity for basketball in the United Kingdom.

“I love it, the players love it. The fan base has got behind building this organization and it’s been nothing short of remarkable,” Schmidt noted. “It’s been fun to see not just a growing fan base, but a consistent fan base. The guys are feeding off that energy, and you could see in the last three or four minutes they thrived on it. It’s an intimate setting and it could become one of the best environments in Europe.”

Although he praised London for its spirited fourth-quarter fightback, Coach Schmidt was less elated with the overall performance.

“When you give up 93 points to a team in this competition, it’s always going to be tough to win,” he lamented. “I wasn’t happy with how we defended throughout the game, but I thought we got some big stops down the stretch in the last three or four minutes.”

London hit 6-of-12 three-pointers in the first half but only 2-of-16 in the second, allowing Promitheas to turn the game on its head as the Greek side finished on 13-of-32 from beyond the arc. Promitheas was also efficient from the foul line, nailing 22-of-25 free throws while London made 11-of-16. The hosts collected 19 offensive rebounds to Promitheas's 14, but it missed a bunch of opportunities to turn those offensive boards into second-chance points, having been put off by the visiting team’s physicality in the paint.

Ultimately, Coach Schmidt gave credit to Promitheas for a mature performance: “I thought they played extremely well. They compete for 40 minutes. You’ve got to give them credit because there were four possessions or so when the shot clock was down to five seconds, but Cowan and \[Joe\] Thomasson hit some tough shots. That’s what big players do.”

Anthony Cowan tamed the Lions in incredible atmosphere

ratiopharm Ulm pulled out a valuable home 97-85 win against Cedeveita Olimpija Ljubljiana in Round 16 that has kept its hopes alive of securing home-court advantage in the playoffs of the 7DAYS EuroCup.

The German team had several reasons behind wanting to beat the visitors, as, in addition to it helping its goals ahead of the playoffs, the 108-78 defeat it suffered against the same opponent in Round 7 still resonated in it’s the hosts' heads.

“We are happy with this win,” Ulm head coach Anton Gavel stated in the press conference. “We lost against them by 30 in the previous game and we knew it was going to be a tough one, knowing that \[Yogi\] Ferrell and \[Josh\] Adams can get hot every single night and every second."

One of the factors that made the difference for Ulm in this game was the joy it had from the free-throw line. Despite a balanced stat line in terms of fouls, with Ulm committing 22 to Cedevita's 24, the home team went to the line 10 more times (34 vs. 24) and had a far better percentage. Ulm scored 30 points from the charity stripe (88.2%), while Cedevita made 19 (79.2%), which means 11 more points in a 12-point win.

Cedevita head coach Miro Alilovic pointed to this in his post-game press conference: “I can be satisfied with the will of the players to prepare for the game, with big desire. And from this big desire, we were over aggressive too many times and we allowed them to make too many free throws." It was a similar story with Coach Gavel. “Offensively we were attacking the basket, which allowed us to have 34 free throws, which was good. We found a way, as always, to score a lot of points.” Ultimately, Ulm's joy from the free-throw line proved key en route to an important victory.

Ulm made the most of free throws to beat Cedevita

7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys beat Germani Brescia 65-74 on the road in Round 16, which extended the hosts' winning streak to five games. Curiously, that run has coincided with the arrival of center Nikola Popovic, who joined the team in late January.

Indeed, Popovic is 5-0 in the EuroCup with Lietkabelis, and his contribution has slowly increased in the last five contests. Against Brescia, Popovic led his team in scoring with 11 points. Lietkabelis had seven other players scoring 6 points or more, which says a lot about the team's balanced offense. Popovic added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 fouls drawn for a team-high PIR of 13.

Lietkabelis: 5-0 since Popovic arrived

Wednesday night's Round 16 fixture was Popovic's third consecutive double-digit game in the competition. In Round 14, Lietkabelis edged Umana Reyer Venice 87-84 at home, with the 25-year-old recording 13 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and a PIR of 17. Popovic had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a PIR of 13 in Round 15 against Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana, too. In his five games with the team, Popovic has averaged 8.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and a PIR of 10.0 in 18 minutes on the floor. By adding Popovic and Gediminas Orelik, Lietkabelis has become an unstoppable force and has many reasons to be optimistic moving forward.
