"\[I want to express my\] gratitude to the club for the trust and for the support in the decisions we have made, both on and off the court," said Coach Lakovic. "\[This decision\] has been very simple for me and my family. We are happy here on a daily basis, \[as well as\] with the people whom I work with and travel with."

Last summer, Granca took the decision to hire Lakovic as Porfirio Fisac's replacement, following the impressive job that the Slovenian did with ratiopharm Ulm. After guiding Ulm to the playoffs in 2021-22 with a record of 7-11, Lakovic's side caused a big upset by eliminating Joventut Badalona 73-79 on the road in the eighthfinals. So far with Granca, he has guided the team to the EuroCup's best record.

After swiping a 7DAYS EuroCup season-high 15 steals on the way to a [78-83](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/ratiopharm-ulm-prometey-slobozhanske/U2022/145/) road win against ratiopharm Ulm on Wednesday, Prometey Slobozhanske is not only holding fast to first place in Group A, but threatening to make some statistical history, too. 

While head coach Ronan Ginzburg's squad is doing a lot of things right, it is stealing the ball at a truly rare rate of 9.8 times per game.

To put that into perspective, no EuroCup team has topped 10.0 steals on average since a team from Groningen, Netherlands, had 10.8 per game while losing its only six games back in 2011-12. Prior to that, more than 100 teams were shown to have had 10-plus per game over a season, but that was largely due to the statistical criteria for steals being applied very loosely in many countries. But since the application of that criteria was tightened, no team has thrived on robbery like this season's displaced Ukrainian powerhouse.

"To keep Ulm to 78 points, it's a big achievement," Ginzburg said after the game. "Usually, we are trying to be aggressive on defense. We have players who can do that. Sometimes it works, sometimes not."

It did not work when Prometey first met Ulm back in a Round 6 game played at Zalgirio Arena in Kaunas, Lithuania. Ulm won that one 105-106 in regulation time, the second-highest scoring game in the league this season.

On Wednesday, however, Prometey's defenders took back the momentum after Ulm ran out to a 14-5 lead, making 9 steals in the next 10 minutes to get back in the game. By the end of the third quarter, Prometey had 14 of its total 15 steals and a 56-64 lead that it protected the rest of the way.

[Caleb Agada](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/caleb-agada/011944/), who ranks second among all EuroCup stealers with 2.3 per game, swiped a personal high of 5 balls from Ulm. Four of his teammates – [James Dickey](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/james-l-dickey-iii/011835/), [Gian Clavell](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/gian-clavell/011942/), [Olksandr Lypovyy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/oleksandr-lypovyy/001686/) and [Issuf Sanon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/issuf-sanon/011947/) – had 2 each. That shows that Prometey's thieving proclivity is a team thing, especially since the fourth-ranked stealer in the league, D. J. Kennedy, had none against Ulm. 

"We knew coming in that these are two offensive-minded, fastbreak teams, so we knew the team that was going to play better defensively was probably going to come out on top," Agada said.

Prometey's steals are a big part of why it leads Group A with 15.8 turnovers per game forced on opponents, including 20 that Ulm coughed up. Combined with its own 12.7 turnovers per game, tied for second-lowest in the league, Prometey has more possessions to score with and often more easily, on breakaways from steals, hence it's second-ranked 87.2 points per game.

Next up on Prometey's agenda is clinching home-court advantage in the playoffs and then first place in Group A. At the rate they are going, who would doubt that Prometey's stealers might just grab everything in their path.

As Agada put it, "We really believe we can do something special this year, and we just want to come out and prove it every single game."

Watt was everywhere in a 90-64 home win against Germani Brescia that allowed Reyer to  punch its playoffs ticket from Group A.  In less than 23 minutes on court, Watt complied 22 points on 7-for-8 two-point and 8-for-9 free-throw shooting to go with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal for a performance index rating of 34, the highest of Round 15.

Tomic led Joventut with 22 points on 10-for-11 two-pointing plus 8 rebounds and 5 assists. [Miye Oni](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/miye-oni/012079/) of London Lions stood out in his team's 76-83 road victory over Slask Wroclaw. Oni had 22 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks for a PIR of 30. U-BT Cluj-Napoca kept its playoff chances alive by holding off Frutti Extra Bursaspor 87-83 on Wednesday night. Cluj led by as many as 14 late in the third quarter, but had to fight until the end to win and improve to 5-10 in Group B, while Bursaspor dropped to a 7-8 record. Bursaspor, however, did take the tiebreaker, having won the two teams' Round 6 meeting by 15 points.

Paris's star guard Kyle Allman missed out through injury and his team subsequently struggled on offense, scoring more than 20 points in just one of the four quarters. Hamburg improved to 5-10 with the win, while Paris dropped to 9-6. The hosts came closer to clinching a playoff spot, as it sits eighth in Group B, while Paris dropped to fifth.

Group A leader Prometey Slobozhanske extended its winning streak to eight games with a 78-83 road victory at ratiopharm Ulm on Wednesday, denying the hosts a chance to qualify for the 7DAYS EuroCup Playoffs. Prometey improved to 11-4 and has not lost a game in 2023. Ulm dropped to 8-7 and fell into the Group A pack instead of separating itself.

Veolia Towers Hamburg held Paris Basketball’s potent offense to just 74 points as it grabbed a hard-fought 91-74 home win in Round 15 of the 7DAYS EuroCup. Afterward, the fans at [Edel-optics.de](http://Edel-optics.de) Arena hailed their heroes, who were aggressive on defense throughout the game and dominated in the paint from the off.

Heading into Wednesday’s duel, Hamburg had the third-worst defense in the competition, giving up an average of 86.0 points per game, and it was assigned with the task of stopping the EuroCup’s third-best attack, with Paris averaging 86.9 points prior to Round 15.

It was a case of mission accomplished for the hosts, who beat Paris at its own game. No team had recorded more rebounds than Paris’s 41.2 per game, while only two had more offensive boards (12.1) and just one EuroCup side had averaged more defensive rebounds (29.1) than the guests before the game in Hamburg.

Yet, Hamburg outrebounded Paris 44-35, with the visitors’ head coach, Will Weaver, pointing to the decisive difference with regard to offensive boards.

“I think the offensive rebounding is the biggest piece, as they doubled us up on offensive boards,” Coach Weaver explained after the game.

“They had 13 offensive rebounds to our 6. That’s typically something we do to the other teams. They hit quite a few long twos that we contested pretty well, but had we rebounded their missed \[shots\] better, we would have had more opportunities to run in transition and that would have given us a chance to score more than 74 points.”

Indeed, Hamburg managed 18 second-chance points, while Paris registered just 3. This, along with the fact that the hosts outscored the visitors 15-9 in terms of points off turnovers, speaks volumes about Hamburg’s intensity on defense throughout the game. Hamburg forced Paris to as many as 18 errors, which is higher than its average of 14.4 turnovers committed per game.

“I’m extremely happy with the way we rebounded the ball on the offensive end, creating second chances and going for the second chances aggressively,” Hamburg head coach Benka Barloschky stated.

“It’s what we try to do. That was the plan and we executed the plan. I’m super happy about that. It's all about the guys. They put the work in during practice – we are working on one-on-one defense, we are working on short helps in the triangles – and it paid off tonight."

This was a much-needed victory for Hamburg, who had lost each of its last three games at home before Wednesday’s clash. Hamburg may not have secured a top-8 place just yet, but this performance can surely serve as a springboard in its bid for cement a playoff spot.

Hamburg dominated in the paint to overpower Paris

Gran Canaria was made to work harder than it might have expected for its 94-88 home win against Dolomiti Energia Trento, but the Spanish side’s deeper roster and superior ball control ultimately made the difference in an entertaining clash.

Granca, known for their free-flowing offense, dished out 23 team assists and committed 12 turnovers, forcing Trento on the back foot in both departments as the Italian outfit produced 16 assists and as many turnovers.

Interestingly enough, Trento dominated the boards (34-28) but could not make its impressive rebounding count, as Granca sank 11 three-pointers while the visitors managed 8.

The teams sank 23 shots each from inside the arc and both sides enjoyed smooth free-throw shooting, with Granca going 15-of-17 from the foul line and Trento 18-of-20.

The contest thus came down to versatility, with Granca boasting five scorers in double digits, while Andrew Albicy racked up 6 assists in addition to 8 points and 3 steals.

Ferran Bassas scored 6 points on 2-of-4 shooting from downtown and dished out 5 assists, highlighting Granca’s deep roster which had too much firepower for plucky Trento.
