Neptunas Klaipeda grabbed an impressive road win at Cedevita Olimpija in Round 5, but it so very nearly threw it all away in the dying seconds.

“In the end we had a chance to win after all this craziness during the game,” lamented [Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/cedevita-olimpija-ljubljana/lju/) head coach Zvezdan Mitrovic after his team's 91-94 defeat to [Neptunas Klaipeda](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/neptunas-klaipeda/kla/). “But I think tonight's game was finished in the first quarter, when we opened the game super soft and with no defense, allowing them to score 34 points \[in the first quarter\].”

Mitrovic was right. His team had the chance to complete a historic comeback after trailing by 20 points in the first quarter (11-31), and later by 10 (76-86) midway through the final quarter.

A steal by [DJ Stewart](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/dj-stewart/012700/), with the score at 91-93 and just 2 seconds left on the clock, gave Cedevita one last opportunity to win the game. But a misunderstanding between him and [Umoja Gibson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/umoja-gibson/013855/) ended up in a turnover that confirmed Neptunas’s victory.

“It was a rollercoaster game. We started very well. Then, we kind of struggled against the switching defense of Cedevita,” acknowledged Neptunas head coach Gediminas Petrauskas.

The Lithuanians had an impressive first quarter, with [Rihards Lomasz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/rihards-lomazs/005553/) and [James Karnik](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/james-karnik/013884/) pushing Neptunas to a 16-34 advantage at the end of the first quarter. However, Cedevita didn't surrender.

Despite facing the best rebounding team in the competition, Cedevita made up for its problems under the boards – the Slovenians ranked last in rebounding coming to this game – and matched Neptunas’s force inside. Also, a couple of threes by [Joseph Girard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/joseph-girard-iii/013856/) and a scoring spurt by [David Skara](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/david-skara/004639/) helped the home team reach halftime still in the game (42-49).

Step by step Cedevita got closer, and the rally was finally completed when [Thomas Kennedy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/thomas-kennedy/013973/) converted a bucket to make it 71-70 and reset the game with still 8 minutes to play.

The joy didn’t last for long for the home side, though, as [Arnas Velicka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/arnas-velicka/006326/) and Lomasz showed up from deep to cool it down immediately. The Latvian shooter came up big soon after when he chained together a three-point play and a trey to restore a double-digit edge, 76-86, with 4 minutes to go.

“I think the key moment was the beginning of the third quarter. We kind of started the same way we started the first quarter: with good intensity, with the idea of what we want to play,” said Petrauskas, who praised his players’ poise when Cedevita came back.

“As a coach, you are always proud after the wins. But at the same time, how we played the end of the game it was something unspeakable. We must control the ball better in these circumstances, but obviously we are happy to get the \[team's\] first away win in the EuroCup”.

It’s easy to understand the bittersweet feeling of Petrauskas when reviewing the last possessions of his team. After giving up 14 points in the previous game against Hamburg and wasting a 20-point lead early in the game, Neptunas committed several turnovers and mistakes in crunch time that allowed Cedevita to come within 91-93 with 10 seconds left, before then forcing a turnover on the following inbound pass.

Luckily for Neptunas, it didn’t go further.

“For me, we didn't deserve to win tonight because Neptunas played better,” Mitrovic admitted. “They scored all these tough points in clutch time. I don't know how many threes in the last seconds, contested shots, they made.” 

Neptunas, now riding a two-game winning streak, can start to look upward, while Cedevita will be eager to address its two-game losing skid as soon as possible.

Chemnitz survives German derby ups and downs to defeat Ulm

In a roller coaster German derby, NINERS Chemnitz outlasted ratiopharm ulm 89-78 in their first meeting on an international stage.

Both teams entered the night chasing a different kind of spark. Chemnitz looked for rhythm after a string of close defeats, while Ulm aimed to bounce back following last week’s first loss of the season. When the final buzzer sounded, what Chemnitz had been searching for in recent weeks finally clicked into place.

‘‘The most important thing to see is to have everybody on the court, then the rest will come by itself,’’ said coach Rodrigo Pastore in the post-game interview.

In a high-paced battle, Chemnitz’s intense defense proved to be one of the key factors early on. Kevin Yebo set the tone in the first quarter with his presence on offense, while Corey Davis took over in the second to keep the momentum on Chemnitz’s side through halftime. Ulm, however, refused to fade, finding second chances on the boards, grabbing 11 offensive rebounds in the first half alone.

The second half told a completely different story. Ulm came out of the locker room with an aggressive defensive approach, forcing turnovers and tough shots to shift the momentum, outscoring Chemnitz 27-12 in the third quarter to get back in the game. But just like in the first half, Chemnitz found its rhythm again in the final period and never looked back. Chemnitz managed to hold Ulm, the EuroCup’s top scoring team through the first 4 rounds with averaging 99.0 points per game, to just 78 thanks to a strong defensive display.

After the game, Coach Pastore pointed to injuries as the key challenge: “We finished the game with a very strong fourth quarter. It’s a step forward, it’s still not where we think we can arrive in terms of playing consistent basketball our way for 40 minutes. That’s gonna get there, we have been pushing our guys a lot with our limited rotation and some of our guys paid that price for it.”

At the heart of Chemnitz’s performance stood Corey Davis Jr., whose impact was felt everywhere. Beyond his defensive presence, the American guard fueled his team with timely three-pointers that stretched the lead and kept the momentum alive. He finished with 23 points on 5-of-9 shooting from deep, along with 6 assists, and he even added 2 blocks to complete a standout all-around night.

“We did a good job, with coming out of here playing aggressive,” said Davis Jr. “This crowd gave us a big boost. We had to dig deep, we had to be aggressive the whole game. And just put them on their toes, just played as hard as we could.”

Coach Ty Harreson also praised Chemnitz’s strong defense: ‘‘These small things end up being the big difference in the game.

‘‘Felt like it was closer than a 10-point game. Credit to Chemnitz, Rodrigo always does a great job, they held us at %40 percent from two, and 26% from three, I thought it changed a lot of shots right by the rim. It’s something that we need to improve, as we move forward.’’

In Round 6, Ulm will look to stay sharp when it hosts the London Lions. Meanwhile, Chemnitz will hit the road to face Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse.

The game saw both teams go blow-for-blow for most of the contest until the Venetians pulled away in the fourth quarter. The scoring burst that took Reyer over the edge was led by American veteran guard [Denzel Valentine](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/denzel-valentine-/013930/), who had his first standout performance in the BKT EuroCup since joining this past summer.

The 31-year-old added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals to his 18-point scoring display, which was punctuated by making 6 of his 10 three-point attempts. His confident shooting from beyond the arc added a much-needed spark in a must-win game, as the Italian team attempted to turn its campaign around.

Coming into the game, Valentine had only reached double figures in scoring once in European competition this season. The performance over Slask sparks a real breakout moment in the former NBA player’s Reyer career. Though he only played 21 minutes, Valentine was able to lead the second unit and totally shift the momentum.

“I think it was a team win,” Valentine said. “Everyone contributed. The second unit came in and we played really good defense. We were consistent all game and that’s what got us the win.”

After the game, he received the backing of his head coach Neven Spahija, who was full of praise for Valentine and the rest of the Reyer bench.

“In the last quarter, we finally started to play defense the way we want to play,” Spahija stated. “In that quarter, we did excellent offensively and better defensively. We won almost every category in that quarter. After we suffered in the last two games on the road, we deserved this win.”

Wiltjer agreed with his coach, echoing the pride in his team’s steadiness down the stretch, against an albeit undermanned Slask team.

“A lot of guys stepped up and we played with fire in the fourth quarter. I’m so glad we got the win.”

Though missing three key players, Slask head coach Ainars Bagatskis was visibly frustrated after the game. He felt that the team had prepared properly for the clash, but was ultimately punished for its late-game complacency.

“I don’t really know what to say, as the game was exactly as we planned,” said Bagatskis. “Their offensive talent is really incredible and if you became relaxed, soft or if you were thinking too much, they will immediately punish you. We were in the game for 33 minutes. Some of our guys forgot about who they play against, they made three three-point shots in a row and that changed the game totally.”

The result ends Slask’s perfect home record in the competition, seeing it drop to a 2-3 mark. Valentine and his teammates will be relieved to have improved their record to 2-3 after a tough start.

Buducnost VOLI Podgorica suffered through some uncommon defensive struggles on the road in Round 5 of the BKT EuroCup, but it managed to come through at the offensive end thanks to a career night by Juwan Morgan.

The forward tallied 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists for a performance index rating of 30 in Buducnost’s important 91-98 road victory over [Lietkabelis Panevezys](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/lietkabelis-panevezys/lkb/). Morgan set new career highs in points, assists and PIR – surpassing his previous bests of 15, 5 and 28, respectively. 

“The start of the fourth quarter, we pressured the ball really well. We got some key stops. You can’t ask for more on the road. You just want to play aggressive and make them make tough shots. We weathered the storm well and came out on top,” Morgan said about the win. 

That left Buducnost with a 3-2 record in Group B including two road wins, having also taken down the London Lions away from home in Round 1. Lietkabelis lost its fourth straight game for a 1-4 mark.

The 28-year-old Morgan was all smiles when asked about his stat-line in the post-game interview, especially the 7 assists. 

“I really take pride in my passing. I like to tell everybody I am the best passer. When things like that happen I feel really good about them. Because that is a team stat. It can be a good pass but the guys still have to make the shots,” said Morgan, who is now averaging 3.6 assists per game after picking up 1.8 assists last season. 

The first 13 minutes were back and forth, with 10 lead changes and 7 ties. Buducnost managed to grab control in the second quarter, extending the lead to 50-59 at the break. That was the club’s most points scored in a first half and third most in a half in EuroCup history. 

Lietkabelis twice trimmed the margin to two points in the third frame, with a Morgan buzzer-beater at the end of the end of the stanza making it 72-77. 

Buducnost knocked down a couple of big three-pointers in the fourth quarter to extend the lead, eventually going ahead 83-93 with 2 minutes to go to decide the game.

Until now, Buducnost had excelled on defense. But they were forced to win this game at the other end of the court.

Buducnost came into the game allowing just 77.0 points per game, the third-fewest in the competition. The Montenegrin side excelled in guarding the three-point line, giving up just 30.0% through the first four games – also third best in the EuroCup. 

But Lietkabelis tallied 91 points while shooting a blistering hot 14 of 26 (53.8%) from long range. 

The saving grace was 47.1% on two-pointers for the hosts, who only committed 8 turnovers, while Buducnost shot 65.9% on two pointers.

Buducnost head coach Andrej Zakelj was not pleased with how his team played defensively. 

"We played tougher defense in the second half but we still made so many mistakes and allowed Lietkabelis to be in the game. All that was from our mistakes. In the end, this is a tough court to play on. It’s never easy to win here. We won, that is what we wanted from this game. We have to move on,” the coach said. 

The win also came thanks to a big night from Juwan Morgan.

The key was efficiency and execution. Alimpijevic designed a sharp game plan centered on his guards’ one-on-one skills. Mathews and Dotson combined for 26 first-half points. Dotson was perfect from the field, going 5-for-5, including a long three-pointer. Mathews added three triples on his way to 12 points.

Together, the duo posted a performance index rating (PIR) of 28 – double that of the entire Bourg team (14) in the same span. Besiktas tallied just 9 assists before halftime, but by putting the ball in the right hands, they made every possession count.

“Defense was good, obviously, we kept them to 60 points,” Alimpijevic added. “But I have to say something: this was so far the best defensive team in both groups in the EuroCup, allowing opponents to score under 63 points on average. We scored 90, so that was also one very important part of our preparation – to be sharp on offense.”

The defense also fueled the offense. Bourg, which averaged just 11.9 turnovers per game, committed 10 in the first half alone. Besiktas turned those mistakes into easy transition points, compounding Bourg’s frustration.

Combined with Mathews and Dotson’s hot shooting, it resulted in a record-breaking first half.

Besiktas’s 28-point halftime lead was the club’s second largest in EuroCup history, behind only a 33-point margin (61–28) against ratiopharm ulm on October 14, 2024.

For Bourg, it marked its worst first-half deficit ever in the competition, surpassing the 54–31 gap from Game 1 of the 2024 EuroCup Finals against Paris Basketball.

After the break, Besiktas managed the game smartly. The offensive fireworks slowed down, but the outcome was never in doubt. The early explosion had already sealed the deal – and ended Bourg’s perfect start to the season in style.

Just like Besiktas made history in the first half, its eventual 30-point victory marked the second-best margin of victory in the club's EuroCup history, only trailing the 33 it beat Ulm by last season.

“I think it was a great sight to see. This team came out and fought from the opening minute,” Dotson said after the game. “There is no better crowd in Europe, I think, than our fans — the supporters that cheer for us from the start of the tip. I am excited. We have to keep it rolling.”

Dotson emphasized the importance of setting the tone early.

“I wanted to make a point by starting with energy,” he said. “It starts with the point guard getting the team going, and my teammates did a great job of keeping the energy flowing. This is a long road, but we will keep rolling.”

Besiktas GAIN Istanbul made sure there are no more undefeated teams left in Group B by thrashing Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse 90-60 at home in Round 5 on Wednesday. Both teams now have a 4-1 record in the standings. Besiktas led 26-13 after 10 minutes, boosted its margin to 55-27 at halftime and kept a safe margin all the way until the final buzzer. This marked Bourg's first-ever loss by as many as 30 points in six EuroCup seasons.

Devon Dotson and Yigit Arslan led the winners with 16 points apiece. Ante Zizic added 15 and 14 rebounds, Jonah Mathews scored 14 and Anthony Brown scored 11 for Besiktas. Ricky Lindo paced Bourg with 11 points and Darius McGhee added 10.

Juwan Morgan collected 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists and Yogi Ferrell had 16 points and 8 assists in the win. Lietkabelis has now lost four straight for a 1-4 record despite Michael Flowers picking up 20 points in his first EuroCup game for the team. Augustin Rubit added 17 points.

NINERS Chemnitz defeated ratiopharm ulm 89-78 at Messe Chemnitz, improving to 2-3 in the BKT EuroCup. In a roller-coaster game, Chemnitz controlled the first half, but Ulm stormed back from a 13-point deficit in the third quarter to briefly take the lead. The home side, however, responded with an impressive fourth-quarter performance, tightening up defensively and closing out the game strong.

Corey Davis Jr. led Chemnitz with 23 points and 6 assists for a PIR of 32, while Kevin Yebo added 25 points and 9 rebounds. Ty Brewer also contributed 11 points. For Ulm, Malik Osborne recorded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, Mark Smith added 16 points and 7 rebounds, and Chris Ledlum chipped in 16 points.

Umana Reyer Venice took control when it really mattered, as an impressive fourth quarter saw it defeat Slask Wroclaw 92-104 at Hala Orbita on Wednesday night. The teams traded blows for most of the first half, with Slask driving aggressively and Reyer shooting efficiently from beyond the arc. At the break, Neven Spahija’s men held a 3-point advantage. The teams continued to go back-and-forth as the second half began, but the hosts could not really take command at any point. Every time Slask edged ahead, Reyer would put together a run to regain the lead. An impressive in the fourth quarter widened the gap to double figures, as Carl Wheatle and Denzel Valentine made key threes to pull away.

Valentine’s second half shooting barrage made him the difference maker for Reyer. The American forward added 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals to his 18-point scoring display, punctuated by hitting 6 of 10 from three-point land. Jordan Parks, RJ Cole, Kyle Wiltjer and Ky Bowman also reached double digits in scoring. The result ends Slask’s perfect home record in the competition, moving to 2-3 in it’s EuroCup campaign. The Venetians will be relieved to have improved their record to 2-3 after a tough start.

Neptunas Klaipeda surprised Cedevita Olimpija and pulled out a valuable 91-94 win from Arena Stozice on Wednesday night. The visitors got their second straight win - and first on the road - to improve to 2-3, while Cedevita dropped to 3-2 after losing its second in a row and first at home. 

Neptunas set the foundations for a victorious night early in the game, thanks to an 11-31 advantage after 9 minutes. Despite a strong rally that put Cedevita ahead 71-70 early in the fourth quarter, a rack of three-point plays by Richard Lomasz and Arnas Velicka returned a double-digit lead, 76-86, to Neptunas, which proved good enough to confirm the win.  

Lomasz paced the winners with career-high 25 points, James Karnik posted 18 points and 8 boards for a PIR of 28, Mindaugas Girdziunas scored 16 and Velicka finished with 11 points and 8 dimes. Aleksej Nikolic poured in 19 points and dished 6 assists, Umoja Gibson followed with 17 and 8, while David Skara, DJ Stewart and Thomas Kennedy provided 17, 14 and 11 points respectively for the losers.

Turk Telekom Ankara grabbed its third consecutive victory in Group B by downing the London Lions 77-89 at the Copper Box Arena in the British capital on Wednesday. Turk Telekom improved to 3-2 in the standings while London dropped to 2-3 after registering its second home loss in this BKT EuroCup season.

Kyle Allman led the winners with 22 points and 6 assists. Jaleen Smith added 18 points, Kyle Alexander paired 15 points with 10 rebounds and Kris Bankston scored 12 points for Turk Telekom. Kameron McGusty and Joel Scott paced London with 16 points apiece and Tarik Phillip had 10 for the Lions, who led 52-50 early in the second half. Allman, Smith and Bankston stepped up to give Turk Telekom a double-digit lead, 60-72, after 30 minutes, which was enough to control the game for good.

Bahcesehir College Istanbul finished Round 5 of the BKT EuroCup as the only remaining undefeated team after the Turkish side defeated BAXI Manresa 67-81 on the road. Bahcesehir went up by 13 points after 10 minutes and never allowed Manresa to get closer than 9 points the rest of the game. 

Hunter Hale scored 17 points to pace four Bahcesehir scorers in double figures, including Malachi Flynn with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists as Bahcesehir improved to 5-0 in Group A. Manresa saw its three-game winning streak snapped to drop to 3-2. Agustin Ubal top-scored for the Spanish club with a career-high 15 points.

Dolomiti Energia Trento used a fourth-quarter rally to shock Panionios Cosmorama Travel Athens 87-91 in their Group B clash on Tuesday night in the Greek capital. Trento improved to 2-3 record, while Panionios lost its fourth consecutive game as not even a coaching changed helped it avoid dropping to 1-4 record.

For Trento, which trailed by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, and took its first second-half lead with under 3 minutes to go in the game, DeVante Jones led the way with 20 points and 6 rebounds. DJ Steward had 18 points while Matas Jogela netted 16. Nate Watson had 20 points, while Matt Lewis and Giorgos Tsalmpouris scored 18 apiece in a loss by the home team coached by Ilias Zouros.

Fatts Russell led the way with 26 points, setting the tone early and guiding his team throughout the game. Despite Hamburg’s efforts to close the gap in the second half, Cluj maintained its rhythm and composure to secure the victory on the road. 

Alongside Russell, Dusan Miletic added 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks, while Mitch Creek contributed 9 points and 5 rebounds for a PIR of 18. For Hamburg, Leonard Thorpe finished with 18 points and 6 assists and Zacharie Perrin posted 17 points, 7 rebounds, while Carlos Stewart chipped in 11 points.

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem comfortably defeated Aris Thessaloniki Betsson 103-76 on Tuesday night at Hala Sportova Rank Zeravica. Igor Milicic’s first game as Aris head coach saw his team make a competitive start, attacking in transition through the rapid pace of Bryce Jones. Jerusalem pushed back, earning a one-point lead heading into halftime. 

The third quarter is when everything changed; the home team pulled away, scoring and defending as a unit to carve out a double-digit advantage. Jared Harper and Khadeen Carrington shot confidently, growing the lead down the stretch and with Justin Smith dominating the paint, Jerusalem were simply too much for the visitors. Despite losing the battle on the boards, the hosts finished with 9 more assists, 6 fewer turnovers and hit 50% of their shots from beyond the arc. 

Harper played the starring role, adding 2 steals and 8 assists to his 18-point scoring performance. Smith, Carrington, Cassius Winston, Anthony Lamb and Yovel Zoosman all also scored in double figures. "On Sunday evening we returned from our Istanbul-Sarajevo tour. It was exhausting, especially considering that we’re still playing with a shortened rotation — we’re missing two big men, which automatically means we have to make different rotations and burden players in unfamiliar positions. I don’t like that, and it’s also visible in the performance of some players who should be playing at a higher level. Still, we’re satisfied with the tour — when you come back with a win, that’s always a good thing. Now we have a game against Neptunas ahead of us, a typical Lithuanian team. On Sunday, in their domestic league game, they scored 117 points without going into overtime. They play excellent offensive basketball and have size, toughness, and aggressiveness — like all Lithuanian teams. Neptunas is definitely a different kind of opponent than those we’ve faced so far. They have depth, great shooting, and good rebounding. We started preparations on Monday with video analysis, and we’ll continue on Tuesday and Wednesday. That’s the rhythm we have to accept — analysis and implementing new ideas with our players. Both teams have about the same amount of time to prepare for the game. I definitely regret that we don’t have more players available, as some are really overloaded. It’s not easy, but the players’ attitude is excellent — on Monday we had a good practice, and you could clearly see they’re motivated."

BKT EuroCup fans have surely noticed him over the past two years. [Alfonso Plummer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/alfonso-plummer/012077/) of [BAXI Manresa](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/baxi-manresa/man/) has quickly become one of the competition’s premier shooters — and he’s got the numbers to prove it.

After a brief first EuroCup stint with Paris Basketball in the 2022–23 season, Plummer buried 42.1% of his three-point attempts (on 5.6 shots per game) with ratiopharm ulm last season. This year, he’s been even better with Manresa, hitting 10 of 19 shots from deep (52.6% 3FG).

In Round 4 against Aris Thessaloniki Betsson, Plummer led Manresa to a 79–86 road victory with 18 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting in under 15 minutes. Currently, he ranks third in points per 40 minutes (31.8), trailing only Dmytro Skapintsev of Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem (36.8) and Fatts Russell of U-BT Cluj-Napoca (32.0).

Obviously, those shots don’t fall by accident. As Plummer told Javier Gancedo in this interview, “Every 3–4 days, I take between 1,000 and 2,000 shots. In the morning, if I have the shooting machine, I shoot around 300 to 500. After practice, I’ll take another 100 or so. Little by little, it adds up — you can do the math.”

**Q: Hello, Alfonso. Congratulations on the victory against Aris in Thessaloniki. It was your first road win and your third consecutive in the EuroCup. How important was this victory to keep believing in what you do?**

“Thank you. It was very important, obviously. We came off a loss against Gran Canaria in the Spanish League and had some doubts about what we needed to improve. We stayed motivated, stuck to our coach’s game plan, and it worked. We executed really well on both sides of the court and managed to pull off that road win. It’s very difficult to win away in the EuroCup.”

**Q: Were you impressed by the atmosphere in Thessaloniki? Have you seen anything similar in Puerto Rico or elsewhere in Europe?**

“Of course. Playoff games in Puerto Rico have a similar atmosphere. Fans there are passionate about basketball, so during the postseason, you really feel that same energy. But here, it’s more consistent — there’s a lot of culture around the games. You see the flags, the chants, the songs that have been there for so many years. It’s really impressive. I loved seeing that.”

**Q: This is your third EuroCup team, and you know what to expect from the competition. What do you like about it?**

“Definitely the competitiveness. There are so many high-level players — guys who’ve played in the NBA or EuroLeague. I love that level of basketball. It makes me grow, learn, and improve as a player. That’s what I’m always looking for: to get better every day. So I’d say it’s the competitiveness and overall level that I enjoy most — you can see it in every game.”

**Q: You mostly came off the bench in Paris and Ulm but have a very different role here. Is that what you were looking for when you joined Manresa?**

“Yes, of course. I think I’ve earned this role. Last year, my job was to bring energy off the bench — on both ends of the floor — to keep the team balanced. I think I did that well, but I also felt I had more to offer. Manresa gave me the confidence and opportunity to show that, and thankfully, I’m doing it.”

**Q: You’re an elite shooter, with a higher three-point percentage than from inside the arc, and you take far more threes. Is that something you specifically work on? Do you have a shooting routine?**

“It’s all about consistency. I have a routine I always follow — I shoot every day, before and after practice. That builds mental toughness over the years. You have to stay disciplined and consistent. That’s the only way: having a strong mindset and self-confidence. Teams will use different defenses and players against me, but when it comes to shooting, you’ve got to stay confident and focused.

Every 3–4 days, I take between 1,000 and 2,000 shots. In the morning, if I have the shooting machine, I shoot around 300 to 500. After practice, I’ll take around 100 more. It adds up little by little — about 1,000 shots in 2–3 days.”

**Q: The shooting machine is a great invention, right?**

“It’s amazing! People get tired of passing you the ball, but the machine never does. I can use it anytime, and it gives me as many passes as I want.”

**Q: I heard your personal story — going from Puerto Rico to a junior college in the U.S. — is quite unique. Can you tell us a bit about that journey?**

“It’s been tough. When I was 18, I went to the U.S. without knowing any English. Honestly, it was like a stroke of luck. I was about to play for the University of Puerto Rico, but then a coach called me and told me there was a JuCo interested in a shooter. He wanted to send me to the U.S. to see if I had the talent. That call changed my life.

When I left, I didn’t know the language or the culture. It was hard, but I was hungry — I wanted to play Division I basketball and compete at the highest level. I kept adapting, learning, and working hard. Thank God, I succeeded in JuCo, got my first Division I offer, and finally saw the results of all that work.”

**Q: Coach Diego Ocampo also had to climb the ranks quickly, going from Spain’s third division to the EuroCup in four years. How’s your relationship with him?**

“We have great communication, honestly. After games and practices, he often sends me articles or videos to help me focus, relax, and build confidence. He doesn’t just coach on the court — he helps me mentally off it, too. That’s something to be thankful for, because not every coach does that.

He demands a lot and always tries to get the best out of his players. I respect that. From day one, I’ve seen that he genuinely wants to help us be better than we were yesterday.”

**Q: I have to ask about Kao \[Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu\], who’s been all over the EuroCup Top 10 plays this season. It’s hard to think of anyone who jumps higher! What’s it like playing with him?**

“Man… I’ve never seen anyone jump like that. He dunks so easily — it looks effortless. He’s tall, has crazy reach, and jumps incredibly high. It’s amazing to see, both in practice and games. And what makes it better is that Kao’s such a good, humble person off the court. Everything’s in the right place with him. He’s special, and I’m happy he’s doing so well. Every day in practice, he does something that makes everyone go, ‘Wow.’”

**Q: Your next game is at home against Bahçeşehir, the only undefeated team in your group. Is that extra motivation?**

“Of course! And actually, I played them twice last season with Ulm. They have a good coach and strong players, so it’s a great challenge. That’s extra motivation for me — I want to beat them and celebrate a big win. But we need to prepare physically and mentally to give our best.”

**Q: Manresa is in its first EuroCup season but has a long basketball tradition and passionate fans. What would you consider a good season for you and the team?**

“Winning, obviously. That’s the mentality — everyone prepares to win. We’re doing everything we can to be ready for each game. Of course, we know we won’t win every single one, that’s life, but we’ll always give our best.

I’d rather lose playing really well, with effort and teamwork, than win an ugly game where nothing went right. The best feeling is winning while playing great basketball on both ends — being connected with your teammates. That’s the ultimate satisfaction. So yes, our goal is to have a winning season and prepare for every game like it’s the most important one.”

Cluj stays hot on the road led by red-hot Fatts Russell

U-BT Cluj-Napoca kept its high-powered offense rolling with a 76-95 road win over Veolia Towers Hamburg to improve to 3-2 on the BKT EuroCup.

Coming off a dramatic overtime victory against Umana Reyer Venice last week, Cluj carried that momentum into Germany. Hamburg entered the night still chasing its first victory, but Cluj had showed no signs of slowing down.

[Fatts Russell ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/daron-russell/013943/)once again dictated the tempo, setting the tone early and leading his team with 26 points, including 5 three-pointers. Russell emphasized the team’s energy after the win: “We came out with more energy. We talk a lot and we had big leads going to the other games, we kind of led up, but with this team, we stayed focused and we kept our feet on the pedal. We can score, we have a lot of guys that’s versatile.”

After a fast-paced first quarter where both teams matched each other’s energy, Cluj gradually took control, especially with contributions from beyond the arc. By halftime, Russell had already reached 21 points, while Cluj shot 8-of-16 from three. The deep roster paid off, with bench players giving meaningful minutes. Hamburg managed just 9 points in the second quarter, allowing Cluj to extend the lead to 22.

Cluj never looked back in the second half, finding outside shooting from different players to maintain the gap. With Russell taking a step back, Karel Guzman stepped up, hitting three triples and finishing with 11 points to keep his team ahead. The team also adjusted its defense, mixing aggressive pressure with a more cautious coverage to protect the paint. Dusan Miletic then took over inside, asserting dominance in the paint. The Serbian center shone with 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

“I think we controlled the game,” said coach Mihai Silvasan, “In the first quarter, we allowed some easy points in transition. We allowed them to make some easy shots, but from the second quarter we came back and we were more consistent with the way we played the defense and that made the difference. I’m satisfied with the win.”

Hamburg committed 16 turnovers throughout the game, and despite strong efforts from Zacharie Perrin, who posted 17 points and 7 rebounds, for a PIR of 25, Leonard Thorpe with 18 points and 6 assists, and Carlos Stewart with 11 points, it wasn’t enough to deliver the win they were searching for.

Coach Benka Barloschky summed up the team’s struggles: ‘‘The story is old for us unfortunately. When we get into these stretches, we lose our minds, we break out the structure. Sometimes it looks like we are giving up and that is unacceptable. It happens over and over, that we lose these games in one quarter and are competitive in the other ones. This is something that we have to fix when we want to get winning ways this season.’’

In Round 6, U-BT Cluj-Napoca will look to carry its momentum home against Cedevita Olimpija Ljubijana, while Veolia Towers Hamburg will continue searching for its first win on the road at Umana Reyer Venice.
