The second half of the 2022-23 7DAYS EuroCup began with Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse and Gran Canaria getting one victor clear at the top of the standings in Group A and Group B, respectively. Interestingly, both are tied for just the 12th ranking in defensive efficiency at the moment. However, if Gran Canaria has become the EuroCup's fifth most efficient offense thanks to impeccable timing, Bourg has risen even higher in that ranking, to second, on the strength of its remarkable shot-making.

The table below lists this season's top players in Synergy Shot Making (SSM), a metric calculated by subtracting a player's expected points per shot from the points per shot he actually scored. The result is a figure representing how much he scored above expectations. 

Expectation in this case is measured by Synergy Shot Quality (SSQ), which takes a data-driven, league-specific approach to the vast of amount of data Synergy collects on every shot to estimate the value of each in the EuroCup over the last decade. The model integrates everything from the type of shot to where it was attempted from to what kind of defensive pressure was applied among nearly a dozen other variables.

Taking those estimates and applying them to every field goal attempted so far this season, the league's most effective shooters relative to expectations are apparent. As the table shows, several of the players who have taken great advantage of their shot attempts play for Bourg. Pierre Pelos may not attempt a ton of shots each game, but he's having one of the longest sustained 70%-55%-90% shooting seasons in modern European basketball history. With Frantz Massenat and Isiaha Mike also falling in the top five on the table above, it's not hard to see why Bourg has been so difficult to beat; several of its key players have been performing far beyond expectations.  

Joventut Badalona is the only other team with multiple players on this ranking. Joel Parra and Andres Feliz have not only exceeded expectations by consistently making their shots, but have done so despite high-SSQ attempts. Frutti Extra Bursaspor currently leads the EuroCup in SSQ, but Joventut and several other teams towards the top of the standings are close. 

Unsurprisingly, given how often they create for themselves off the dribble, Tony Taylor of Turk Telekom Ankara and Yogi Ferrell of Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana have the lowest SSQ among this season's 10 leaders on the SSM scale. While one might expect that it's easier for a three-point marksman like Robin Christen of Ulm to climb these rankings, there's a variety of roles represented. 

It is worth noting that there is one group that tends to struggle with SSM and that is lob-catching big men. Players who operate almost exclusively around the rim face an uphill battle to exceed expectations given how high their SSQ is to begin with. Ismael Kamagate of Paris Basketball, for example, has an SSM of just 0.03, but given that his EuroCup-high SSQ of 1.52 dwarfs every player in the table above, that's more of an accomplishment than meets the eye.  

It goes without saying that it is important for teams to work hard to create high-quality shots and avoid low-quality ones on the offensive end. But at the EuroCup level, where highly effective play execution is a given, it's the final step of shot-making by the players often determines just how potent a team will ultimately prove to be.

Players scoring above expectations

Veolia Towers Hamburg added depth to its roster by signing [Anthony Polite](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/anthony-polite/011937/) until the end of the season, the club announced on Saturday. Polite (1.98 meters, 25 years old) arrives from LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne where he saw limited action in eight Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and six French League games.

This is Polite's first professional season in Europe. He spent the past five years at Florida State University, where he averaged 9.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 24 games last season. A native of Switzerland, Polite suffered an injury in his first season at Florida State and had to redshirt. He then increased his totals in all the main areas – minutes, points, rebounds and assists – over the next four years, apart from his last year as he dropped from 10.1 points per game to 9.9.

Hamburg adds forward Polite to the mix

U-BT Cluj-Napoca added more experience to its roster by signing small forward [Jalen Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/jalen-jones/009298/), the club announced Friday night. Jones (2.03 meters, 29 years old) arrives from Hapoel Haifa of Israel where he averaged 11.0 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists. Jones returns to the 7DAYS EuroCup where he made his debut last season with Mincidelice JL Bourg en Bresse, posting 8.9 points and 3.9 rebounds.

A native of Texas, USA, Jones played college basketball in his home state for SMU and then Texas A&M. He has played professionally for New Orleans, Dallas and Cleveland in the NBA; for Maine, Greensboro, Texas, Canton and Capital City in the G League and for Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain. He appeared in 13 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games with Baskonia during the 2018-19 season. Before Bourg, he also played with the Italian club Openjobmetis Varese.

Former 7DAYS EuroCup champion [Michael Eric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/michael-eric/profile/007360/) will return to the competition after being signed by Turk Telekom on Friday for the rest of the season. Eric (2.10 meters, 34 years old) won the title with Darussafaka Istanbul in 2018, his second season in the EuroCup after having debuted with Bilbao Basket of Spain the year before. He averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 rebounds in 30 career EuroCup games.

In his championship season, Eric put up 7.7 points and 5.7 rebounds as a full-time starter for Darussafaka, with whom he made his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut the following season.  He would spend three seasons in a row in the EuroLeague, continuing to Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and CSKA Moscow, with 71 career games averaging of 7.8 points and 3.8 rebounds. Eric played the first part of the 2021-22 season with Unicaja Malaga of Spain but suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Turk Telekom is currently tied for second place in Group B of the 7DAYS EuroCup Regular Season with a 7-3 record.

The 32-year-old guard also led his team with a plus/minus of +15. Entering the game, Cournooh was averaging 7.2 points and 1.7 assists per game. It’s been a hot and cold season for Cournooh who has four games with at least 14 points and six games with 5 or fewer. Brescia is 3-1 when he has scored in double figures.

Reyer dominated inside in its 20-point win, and Tessitori had a large role in it. The 28-year old big man tied his career high in with 15 points, making 5 of 9 two-pointers and 1 of 2 threes. Tessitori also pulled down a personal-best 9 rebounds and posted a career-high PIR of 22.

After 10 rounds, Gran Canaria is the EuroCup team with the best record, 8-2. [In its latest win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/game-center/2022-23/slask-wroclaw-gran-canaria/U2022/99/), the team's scoring production came from the unlikeliest of sources as 20-year old [David Mutaf](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/david-mutaf/008176/) used his first career start to not only shatter several of his career-highs, but also lead Gran Canaria in scoring on the night with 19 points. Mutaf was 5-for-8 from three-point range after netting just 3 triples in his previous 7 appearances dating back to last season. Against Slask on Wednesday, Mutaf also dishes his first 3 assists and picked up his first 3 steals in the competition. After quite a night from Mutaf, Gran Canaria fans hope it is just the beginning for the young swingman from Turkey.

In his 28 minutes on the floor, Agada not only co-led all the scorers in the game with 19 points, but also dished a personal-best 9 assists, tying him tied for the most assists in Round 10. Agada posted a PIR of 27, another best in his first season in the competition, leading the team to its third straight win.

1,500 traveling fans help Hapoel to improbable fourth-quarter rally 

Hapoel Vegan Friendly Tel Aviv found itself trailing London Lions by 14 points with less than 8 minutes to play on the road. But the Israeli side knew it could just chip away at the deficit and get back into the game. And in the end, the support of a fantastic group of visiting fans helped carry Hapoel to the improbable win.

Hapoel mounted a 2-20 run to pull ahead in the fourth quarter and the lead changed hands four times in the final 96 seconds before J’Covan Brown’s jumper with 12 seconds to play gave Hapoel the 93-95 victory over London. And it was clear to Hapoel head coach Danny Franco that his team’s fans deserve a big thank you as well.

“We had a huge support from a lot of fans. 1,500 fans came from Israel all the way to London to the beautiful Wembley area and just helped us to keep our heads up and keep on fighting. Eventually, it paid off,” said Franco about the great support at the Ovo Arena Wembley.

The Hapoel fans gathered in London and walked the streets before the game and expressed their love for the team. And they showed in the arena how much that can mean for the team.

"We feel at home wherever we go. That is Hapoel Tel Aviv. That is our spirit. That’s what we bring to EuroCup - a lot of color and fun, also to London as well,” Franco added.

Even London head coach Ryan Schmidt enjoyed seeing the fan atmosphere.

“It’s fun. Any time you see support like that it’s pretty remarkable - even if it’s not for you. I thought it was really cool for our fans and British basketball as a whole to see that,” Schmidt said. "Credit to them, there were like 1,500 of them and you heard each and every one of them."

Franco’s team needed those energetic voices as well. Hapoel trailed for the first 35 minutes, including giving up a massive 58 points in the first half - just one point fewer than Hapoel allowed in a 77-59 win over London at home in Round 1.

“A lot of heart, a lot of determination to get back into it. We mainly fought ourselves today. We were frustrated that we could not play our game but at the end of the day, we were stubborn enough to pull it out,” said Franco, whose team grabbed 24 offensive rebounds and turned those into a 22-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Hapoel also continued its trend of winning games in which it can really score. The Israeli side improved to 5-0 when it scores at least 93 points.

"It was a total team effort. We fought hard at the end of the game. We never gave up,” said Jordan McRae, who poured in 36 points, including 15 in the final quarter.

It would be hard for McRae and the team to give up with the great support of their fans behind them - as it showed in London.

McRae led Hapoel from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to a 93-95 road win against London Lions on Wednesday. His PIR of 40 was McRae's personal best in two EuroCup seasons and the third-highest of any player this season. His career-high 36 points, reached after scoring 13 in the last 7 minutes, and his 12 two-pointers made were both the highest such totals in the EuroCup this season. McRae also made 9 of 11 free throws to go with 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 8 fouls drawn. 

Sharing Round 10's second-best PIR of 32 were London's [Sam Dekker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/sam-dekker/009672/) and [Patrick Richard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/patrick-richard/011801/) of U-BT Cluj-Napoca.
