Heading into Wednesday’s Group B showdown at the BLM Group Arena, the chances of Dolomiti Energia Trento edging a low-scoring win over Gran Canaria did not look high. 

 

After all, explosive Gran Canaria came into the game averaging a league-high 87 points per game, while struggling Trento’s winless record was largely explained by the fact that the Italian team had allowed 86.8 points per game, the worst defensive record in Group B. 

But on Wednesday night Trento turned the form book on its head with a vastly improved defensive effort to secure its first win, 75-72, restricting Gran Canaria to its lowest-scoring night of the season by a full 10 points.

 

After the game, victorious head coach Emanuele Molin stated that his team’s ambition was to limit Gran Canaria’s three-point shooting and force the visitors into turnovers. That gameplan certainly came to fruition, with the Spanish team making just 9 of 31 attempts from long-range (29%) and committing 20 turnovers – much worse than its overall season stats of 38.7% for threes and 14.2 turnovers.

The victory was even more welcome for Trento because it ended an extremely long losing streak in the 7DAYS EuroCup, stretching back more than a year to November 17, 2021, and an 81-77 victory over Slask Wroclaw in Round 5 of last season’s competition. Since then Trento had lost 17 consecutive games in the competition, so it’s understandable that there were plenty of nerves floating around the BLM Group Arena in the final few seconds.

 

Such tight and nervous victories can also require a dose of fortune, and Trento certainly had that in the decisive stages. With 21 seconds remaining and the home side leading 73-71, Trento had possession but Diego Flaccadori turned it over, giving Andrew Albicy a direct route to the basket.

Albicy drew a foul from Trent Lockett on the way up to shoot, but his attempted layup rolled around and out, meaning he had the chance to tie the game from the line. Albicy is a decent free throw shooter, making 76.8% of his foul shots over the course of his seven-season EuroCup career, but on this occasion, he missed the first to keep Trento ahead. 

 

There was still time for Trento to survive another scare: with Gran Canaria needing a three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime, John Shurna’s shot on the final buzzer was no good, and Trento’s first win was finally assured.

 

So it took a little luck and some missed opportunities by the opponent, but mostly it took an excellent defensive effort. That showed the path for Molin’s men to follow, and with plenty of games remaining, there’s every chance their season could be transformed.

Paris secured its first-ever home win in the EuroCup after grabbing an 87-84 victory over Hamburg at Halle Georges Carpentier. The triumph moved Paris’s record to 4-2, while Hamburg fell to 2-4. Six Paris players had a double-digit scoring night against Hamburg with Amar Gegic and Kyle Allman leading the way with 18 and 16 points, respectively. Yet, the man everyone will be talking about is Ismael Kamagate, who had a 12-point, 20-rebound double-double. His tally of 20 rebounds is tied for the second-most in a EuroCup game. Yoeli Child scored a team-high 17 points for Hamburg.

Benas Griciunas contributed 16 points for Cedevita, which fell to 0-6. Alen Omic added 11 and moved past Sammy Mejia for sixth place on the all-time EuroCup scoring list with 1,221 career points.

There was little to choose between the teams in the first half, and Gran Canaria led 34-38 at the interval. Neither team took control in the third, which ended 53-55, and it stayed close until Diego Flaccadori’s three-pointer inside the final minute gave Trento the win. Matteo Spagnolo led Trento with 13 points, while Flaccadori and Trent Lockett scored 12. Gran Canaria big man Khalifa Diop excelled in defeat, scoring 21 points.

The final assist Dos Santos provided was for a game-winning reverse layup by Karim Jallow, who had 24 points on a perfect night from the floor, going 7-for-7 from two-point range and 2-for-2 from three. For Prometey, Gian Clavell left it all out on the floor, ending with a game-high 34 points.

Promitheas Patras announced on Wednesday that Giannis Christopoulos has become its head coach, following a departure of Makis Giatras who has stepped down due to health reasons. Christopoulos, 48, has last coached with Beijing Ducks in China, and now returns to his hometown where he previously already coached two other clubs, Apollon and Olympias.

During more than 25 years of his coaching career, Christopoulos has also been on the bench of AEL Larissa and Trikala in Greece, APOEL and AEL in Cyprus, FC Bayern Munich in Germany, first as an assistant then as a head coach in the first part of the 2012-13 season. He then went on to work as an assistant with the Chinese national team, before coaching Beijing Ducks since 2017.

"I think we did a better job \[in the second half\]. We got stops on the defensive end, came down and we did a good job not just getting good shots, but kind of working the shot clock a little bit. And that has kind of been our message in the last few weeks, to get on the offensive end with valid possessions, not turning the ball over. In the third quarter, I think we had 7 turnovers and you start seeing them creep back in the game. Again, we have a lot of weapons on the offensive end, we take care of it, and when we get into our rhythm on the offensive end, I think we are a dangerous team. We are getting closer. I think we are kind of closing the gap during the season. There were too many stretches in which we had 1-2 minutes of good play and 3-4 minutes of not-so-great play. I think we kind of flip-flopped that a little bit but there is still a lot to clean up. And we know that every single night in this competition is going to be a battle, so again, we will take the wins we get, I like where we are right now but we know we have a tough task coming ahead.

"Everything is kind of positive. I think we are happy and going in the right direction- After the window, we came back with renewed focus and cleaned some things up, especially on the offensive end. Again, these guys are doing a really good job at playing together. I think the last two games in this competition we are sharing the ball and defensively, we knew that it was going to be our identity and how we were going to be able to win games, and that has been consistent, and it has been fun to see. But yes, we are excited, playing well, but know that in this competition, every single night is going to be a battle. We have to move on and prepare for the next game."

"First, congratulations to London. I think they played a very good offensive game. They were making the most important shots. Definitely, I am not happy about the way we how started the game and how we started the third quarter. Unfortunately for us, we just fell apart in the fourth quarter. So for us, we have two players that played their first game, one of them after 15 months, one after almost two months, so definitely that reflects in the game. They got too many offensive boards, we committed too many turnovers. Defense and rebounding were the two things \[we were missing tonight\]. You don't do that in this competition, you don't have a chance to win the game. We just started to practice with the whole team, or almost the whole team, because our big man was not here tonight. He is back on Friday, so maybe on Friday we will have the first practice with the whole roster this season. That's what we need. We need our whole roster back, to practice and definitely to improve the way we play."

"They made this little run at the end of the first half, so we addressed that in the locker room and came out and knew we had to be the physical team on the defensive end. Our big were flying around, we were blitzing, we were trapping, we were also doing the things that we had to get the ball our of their ballhandlers' hands and that worked for us. We were able to kill possessions, getting rebounds and when we do that, then we just flow in our offense, the hoop opens up for us, and we hit some big-timely shots and then you just ride that for a win. It is a big win for our team, for our program."

Coach Schmidt, London: 'We are a dangerous team'

London Lions recorded their second consecutive victory in Group B by downing Slask Wroclaw 97-80 at The Copperbox Arena on Wednesday to improve to 3-3 in the standings. It marked the first time London has won back-to-back games in the EuroCup.

Sam Dekker led the winners with 18 points. Luke Nelson scored 16, Ovie Soko 15 and Aaron Best had 12 for London. Jeremiah Martin scored 19 points for Slask, which dropped to 0-6 and is the only team without a win in Group B. Kodi Justice added 15, Conor Morgan 14 and Aleksander Dziewa 11 for the visitors.

Nelson, Dekker and Tomislav Zubcic combined for all the points in a 14-0 run that gave London an early 14-2 lead. Martin and Lukasz Kolenda stepped up for Slask and then Justice got the visitors within 25-18 after 10 minutes. Dekker kept pacing London, getting help from Soko and Zubcic to make it 43-28. Slask found new go-to guys in Jakub Niziol and an outstanding Dziewa, who brought their team closer, 48-45, at halftime.

Nelson took over after the break, joining forces with Kosta Koufos and Dekker to establish a 56-47 London lead. Justice buried a buzzer-beating triple for a 68-63 Slask deficit after 30 minutes. Dekker and Soko fueled a 13-0 run highlighted by Miye Oni's coast-to-coast slam. The hosts took an 81-63 margin and never looked back.

Both teams scored freely early, with John Shurna and Diop netting all Gran Canaria’s points in a 10-13 lead. A 6-0 run gave Trento the lead, 29-28, but threes from Nico Brussino and AJ Slaughter made it 34-38 at the break. 

Lockett twice struck from deep to tie it, 44-44, midway through the third, but another Benite triple helped restore Gran Canaria’s lead, 53-55, with 10 minutes left. Toto Forray’s three-point play sent Trento back ahead, and the lead kept swapping hands until the final minute arrived with the game tied, 68-68. Flaccadori’s triple sent Trento ahead and Andrew Albicy’s missed free throw sealed the outcome.

After we struggled a bit in the first half when we let them score some easy baskets and not controlling the rebounds, in the second half we forced them to make 11 turnovers if I’m not wrong, and forced them to drop down their shooting percentage. That was our goal and the game-plan, and the guys did it. That was the key for the win. Congratulations to the team, because finally, they gave me the present of a win in the EuroCup after more than one year.”

### Gran Canaria head coach Jaka Lakovic:

“Congratulations to Trento for a deserved win. To sum up everything, I think Trento wanted the win much more than we did. They played with the necessary mentality to win the game. Our three-point percentage was the key, and 20 turnovers. It was clear that our mindset was not right today and I think that’s why we deservedly lost.”

### Dolomiti Energia Trento guard Trent Lockett:

“It feels good. We’ve been fighting, we’ve had a couple of close ones, and it feels really good to get on the board and see the progress we’ve made over the last couple of months. We have to build on it. Our defense is getting better; we held them to 72 instead of an 85- or 90-point game, so build on all the things we’re doing well. We’re coming off a good win in the domestic league, so continue to grow with that.”

### Gran Canaria guard Vitor Benite:

"It was a tough game, our team competed until the end and fought. Trento was improving lately and trying to grab their first win in the EuroCup with great desire. We must learn from games like these, to have more regularity."

Lockett, Trento: 'It feels really good to get on the board'

On a night when 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys was without its second-best scorer and its best scorer suffered a tough shooting night, it was going to need some others to step up. Kristian Kullamae and Gyorgy Goloman did exactly that to lead Lietkabelis’s record-scoring night.

The hosts set a club record with 60 first-half points and another with 104 points for the game in a 6-point victory over Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana on Wednesday night.

Kullamae had his finest night in the competition with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, which are all personal bests. He previous top marks were 14 points and 4 rebounds; He had 14 points and 3 rebounds in the second half alone on Wednesday.

The first player to heat up was Goloman, who scored 11 points in the first quarter and reached 16 by halftime before finishing with 23, which was more than four times his season average of 5.6 points per game entering Round 6.

Those two players not only paced the Lietkabelis attack, but also led the team in +/-. Kullamae had a +16 in 25 minutes and Goloman was +10 in 32 minutes.

Jamel Morris came into the game ranked fourth in the EuroCup with 18.4 points per game, but was limited to 8 points against Cedevita. He shot 1-for3 on two-pointers and 1-for5 on threes. Morris also dished 6 assists and committed 4 turnovers.  The team’s No. 2 scorer, Zeljko Sakic (14.3 ppg.) remained sidelined due to injury.

"I don’t think that we will have again a win like this with that rhythm, with this many points,” Lietkabelis head coach Nenad Canak said after the game. But if Kullamae and Goloman remain hot and Morris joins them? Who knows?

"Especially in the fourth quarter, we couldn’t get any stops. Defensively we were sloppy – we were just allowing layup after layup and easy baskets – and offensively we were just holding the ball too long, we weren’t moving it well. Then, Prometey came back into the game – give them credit for that – and in the end we found a way to somehow win the game.

"There were some guys who were scoring very well offensively on our side, the same as Prometey – especially \[Gian\] Clavell hurt us big time with his shots and his driving to the basket. We have got to get better out there, managing the lead. We have to get better at that to make sure we don’t lose a lead of 18 points."

### Karim Jallow, ratiopharm Ulm forward

"In the fourth quarter, we didn’t get any stops. They had layup after layup, and at the end they hit some tough shots, so I think that got us back into trouble. Also, we didn’t box out on some crucial plays. They made some big shots, but in the end we stayed calm, we made some good plays at the end, and luckily we got the win.

"Yago is an amazing player, he gives so much to the team. He's so quick, he can do everything – he can shoot, he can pass – so it's really, really great for the team to have him."

"We didn’t play good defense in the first 30 minutes, but then we started to play defense and we were more active. It's a pity that we didn’t do that for the whole game.

"I think \[the key\] is that we started to play defense and we started to make some stops. In the first 30 minutes, we didn’t do anything, they did whatever they wanted to. When you come to the end of the game, little mistakes here or there \[are vital\], and today it went their way."
