Cluj celebrated its first-ever EuroCup victory in style on Wednesday, inspiring 9,300 fans at sold-out bt-arena by taking a huge 94-76 victory over Cedevita. Cluj raced to big leads early that reached 44-24 before halftime. A 14-2 run to start the second half seemed to put the game out of reach at 62-33, but a proud Cedevita lowered the difference to single digits before Cluj closed the door. Stefan Bircevic paced Cluj with 24 points. Leonardo Meindl combined 19 points with 11 rebounds. Josh Adams of Cedevita threatened a triple-double with 25 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds before leaving injured with almost 5 minutes left.

After giving up 33 points in the first quarter, Hapoel set up the win by conceding just 10 points in the second quarter in a 86-100 road victory in Group B. J’Covan Brown flirted with a triple-double in tallying 21 points, 8 rebounds and 12 assists for the winners, who had four other players in double figures including Jaylen Hoard with 16 points and 9 rebounds. Tyrone Wallace scored 17 points to pace Paris, which dropped to 1-1.

It was a special game for Frutti Extra Bursaspor, its first home game since its unforgettable 2022 7DAYS EuroCup playoffs, in which it got three consecutive road wins before losing against Virtus Segafredo Bologna in the championship game.

Things did not look good for Bursaspor. New signing Sindarius Thornwell had not been registered and the team was without two injured players, Zach Auguste and Enes Taksiran. Coach Dusan Alimpijevic only had seven senior players at his disposal, but this time, its fans were on its side. Bursaspor was short-handed during its playoffs run and Coach Alimpijevic adjusted roles to make the team more effective.

Ahmet Duverioglu, Derek Needham and Onuralp Bitim lead Bursaspor to epic home win.

Bursaspor leaders step up big

This time, there was no need to, as its three stars stepped up big. Ahmet Duverioglu dominated the paint, finishing the game with 14 points and 13 rebounds. He had twice as many offensive rebounds (6) as the entire Joventut squad (3). Onuralp Bitim set the tone early and ended up with 18 points and a PIR of 16 in almost 35 minutes. Floor general Derek Needham led all scorers with 24 points and stepped up big in crunch time.

Please put the beep, this is group of big mother----ers," Coach Alimpijevic said after the game before praising the over 5,400 fans present at Tofas Spor Salonu. "For sure, this is not possible, this is not normal to do, with seven players, if you don't have support like this, so big thanks to our fans. What can I say? I am really honored to be in a club that has fans like this."

Short-handed Bursaspor grabbed epic win 

Jaylen Hoard returned home to France and starred for Hapoel Tel Aviv as he has in his first European experience as a professional.

Hoard collected 16 points and 9 rebounds in Hapoel’s 86-100 win over Paris Basket. That came after the French big man tallied 9 points and 7 rebounds in Round 1 against London Lions, the 23-year-old’s first game of the season with the club after missing its first game domestically due to the number of foreign players allowed to play.

Hoard showed what he is capable of doing at a high level at the end of the 2021-22 NBA season with the Oklahoma City Thunder - his third campaign in the NBA. In a six-game stretch in April, Hoard averaged 17.2 points and 13.7 rebounds with two double-doubles with 20-plus rebounds, including 24 points and 21 rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers. Now with Hapoel, he is impressing in his maiden steps in the EuroCup.

Hoard shining in first European experience for Hapoel

Frutti Extra Bursaspor entered its Round 2 game against Joventut Badalona with seven senior players, yet managed to get an 81-72 victory. Avoiding mistakes was the biggest key to the game.

Indeed, Bursaspor committed just 11 turnovers and finished the game with 8 steals. On the other hand, Joventut had 5 fewer steals and more turnovers: 17 from seven different players. Taking better care of the ball paid off down the stretch, as Bursaspor was forced to play one-on-one a lot. It only had 8 assists, half as many as Joventut (16).

Bursaspor also boxed out close to perfection in this game, allowing Joventut to get just 3 offensive rebounds. Two of them were team rebounds, so Jarred Jones was the only Joventut player to actually grab an offensive board in this game. Bursaspor did much better, finishing the game with 12 offensive rebounds. Ahmet Duverioglu had half of them, which allowed him to amass a double-double of 14 points, 13 rebounds and a game-high PIR of 23. David Dudzinski and Yigitcan Saybir each had 3 offensive boards. When the dust settled, minimizing mistakes helped Bursaspor get an epic win!

Promitheas Patras spent the majority of the game trailing against Gran Canaria, but at the end rallied to a 93-82 win on Wednesday night.

Even though Joe Young finished with 34 points, it seemed as though the hosts might never catch Gran Canaria which had Vitor Benite, AJ Slaughter and Nicolas Brussino all hitting timely triples and keeping the visitors with the lead.

With 4 minutes left, Promitheas still trailed 76-82, but little did we know that the hosts will scored  the final 16 points of the night.

Young started things, last week's MVP of the Round Arnoldas Kulboka hit a triple to tie it at 82-82, before team captain Nikolaos Gkikas hit a three-pointer that put Promitheas in front, 85-82.

After another defensive stand, Trevis Simpson hit his only field goal of the night, triple with 32 seconds to go, making it 88-82. Ensuing free throes from Michalis Tsairelis sealed the deal, only for Gkikas to finish things off with his fourth three-pointer on as many attempts, as Promitheas improved to 2-0 in Group B.

Germani Brescia picked up its first win of the season with a 104-70 drubbing of Prometey Sloboznaske. In the victory, six players scored 10 or more points and Brescia scored in triple digits for the first time in a EuroCup game, surpassing the previous mark of 91 points. It also set a new single-game club record for PIR (141), shattering the previous record of 101.

Brescia also tied its club record with 27 assists. Troy Caupain led the way with 18 points, and also had 5 assists, while Amedeo Della Valle scored 17 points while leading the way with 6 assists. Each Brescia player played at least 10 minutes, and each player scored at least 3 points in the big victory.

Hapoel Tel Aviv used some strong rebounding and excellent sharing of the ball to lock up its first road win in the 7DAYS EuroCup.

Hapoel outrebounded Paris Basketball 46-32, including a 14-8 advantage in offensive rebounds in an 86-100 victory to move to 2-0 in Group B. Coach Danny Franco’s team turned the offensive rebounds into 18 second-chance points compared to 11 for Paris.

"We spoke before the game about trying to contain the tempo of Paris Basketball. At the beginning, in the first quarter, it was terrible for us. We watched video, but it’s not always easy to have the players feel how it is on the court. I’m happy we came back after that tough beginning of the game. And I am proud of my players that they reacted, that they were focused. There are a couple of tactical things we need to do in order to compete with the athleticism and skills that Paris has. I know we still have things we need to do. And when you play Paris, for them it’s a game of runs. You need to keep your focus. We got back and made some adjustments offensively. And mainly, with the amazing fans that came here with us and gave EuroCup such great color and environment, that kept our heads up even when Paris made their runs and it brought us energy.

"We came to a game that we knew would be very difficult for us. Every game in the EuroCup is a great challenge. But we came with a belief that we can win. And we came with almost 500 people who supported us, gave us a lot of energy. When Paris made their runs we kept our heads up, we kept our composure and got a lot of energy from our fans to be in a position to win the game. I’m proud of my guys but we need to move on."

"We just wanted to come out and play hard. We got our fans here. That’s what we came out here to do - just play hard, play for each other and fight. Those guys gave us a great shot at the beginning of the game and they’re a great team. But we just locked in and found ways to close the game. Every game is just gonna be different. Sometimes I’m not gonna score the ball, sometimes I am gonna score the ball. But it takes more than just scoring the ball, getting assists, helping with rebounding and just doing all the dirty work. That’s my job. My teammates follow my lead. They trust me in every decision I make. And I’m just glad I can be there for them again."

"I think that period in the second quarter when they were getting stops and running out on us really hurt us. It was a great chess match. Both teams did an exceptional job of adjusting throughout the game. We’re missing Ammir Simms and also the player we signed hoping he could be available for this game, but he wasn’t. We found out last minute that he wasn’t available. But we’re very excited about getting Jeremy Evans involved as an injury replacement and when we’re healthy, we’ll be tough to beat."

Della Valle had a pair of assists and a transition three-pointer to make it 36-26 in the second quarter, but Promtey finished the half with a last-second three-pointer, this time from DJ Stephens to cut it to 48-42 at the break. Brescia built a 58-47 lead midway through the third after David Moss and Caupain each nailed a three-pointer. Kenny Gabriel's corner triple and another one from Caupain helped open a 72-51 margin. The lead kept growing in the fourth, soon breaking a 30-point margin, as Brescia cruised to its first win of the season.
