Paris Basket never gave up in a game in which it trailed 12-0 after 7 minutes and 45-20 midway throughout the second quarter. The young visitors persevered and rallied for a valuable road win in the team’s first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup appearance.

Paris head coach Will Weaver looked pretty happy in the post-game press conference: “I’m a rookie here, I’m still learning,” he joked while waiting for questions from the journalists instead of giving his opening comments to the media. It was his first game in the competition, and so it was for his team, but that lack of experience was not a factor in the end.

“I’m proud of the resilience my players showed, especially competing against a team that is as well-coached and well-built as Turk Telekom,” Weaver said to start the press conference.

That concept, resilience, was also used by Kyle Allman, Paris’s top-scorer with 22 points, when questioned about what led his team to the victory.

“I think my teammates did a good job getting me the ball and we were resilient as we were in the first half,” he stressed.

Allman took charge in second half for Paris

Paris lived a nightmare in the first 7 minutes, missing every shot and turning the ball over 4 times. Turk Telekom took advantage to lead 21-10 at the end of the first quarter and raise the margin to double-digits, 45-20, after 15 minutes. But Paris was not willing to surrender

“We came back, we were down by 15 points, and we came back and pushed to get some stops and trusted each other,” Allman said.

Despite that bad early offensive display, Paris managed to find the right buttons to push and put on an unstoppable offensive performance thereafter. Being down 12-0 after the first 7 minutes, it’s quite remarkable that Paris reached 90 points to win in the end.

”I think that starting scoring 10 points in the first quarter, being scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the game, and from that point forward we made 90, that only comes if you have a very resilient group and a group that plays for each other,” Weaver concluded.

It was a historic night for Hapoel Tel Aviv as the team made its 7DAYS EuroCup debut. Its opponent, London Lions, also appeared in the competition for the first time. You could feel the excitement in the stands and the sold-out crowd and their great support played a big role in Hapoel's first EuroCup win. 

 

Hapoel defeated London 76-59 in front of over 3,000 fans at Shlomo Group Arena who were already jumping up and down long before tip-off. London struggled early and Hapoel used the fans' energy to go on a 12-1 opening run. 

"First of all, it was a great atmosphere throughout the game, our fans really gave us a boost and helped us out to climb that mountain of London. I am really happy for the win and excited for the club," Hapoel head coach Danny Franco said after the game. 

 

Circumstances helped Hapoel a little bit, as London lost star forward Sam Deker to a sprained ankle midway through the first quarter. Head coach Ryan Schmidt had to modify the game plan and shots were not falling in. Hapoel, pushed by its incredible crowd, relied on J'Covan Brown to make the difference early in the game. Brown struck three times from beyond the arc in his team's opening run and kept going through the game. 

At the end of the game, Brown led his team in scoring (19), assists (6) and PIR (20) and did not turn the ball over even once. In fact, Hapoel did a terrific job at taking care of the ball, getting 17 assists and just 6 turnovers. 

 

"I just wanted to be aggressive. This is my first EuroCup and I have to set the tone night in and night out. I know what it is about with me. I know what it is about for the organization and my teammates, and I am just ready," Brown said right after the game. "I'm here, some nights it's going to be my night, some nights it's not going to be, but most of the time, I am going to make sure I'm there."

Brown helps Hapoel to historic win

Coach Franco was extremely happy after the game but also wanted to be cautious, as the EuroCup season has just started and this win doesn't change the fact that Hapoel has to get used to a new level of competition. 

 

"There were a lot of expectations, a lot of concerns before the game but winning in the amazing atmosphere we had here tonight is something we dreamed of, " he said. "It is the first step of a very long journey and I am happy to start it on the right foot."

 

With that kind of fan support, Hapoel should be a very tough opponent in Tel Aviv. Before that, the team is set to test its strength on the road in Round 2 against Paris Basketball and Round 3 against Turk Telekom Ankara.

Joventut Badalona had a strong start to the 2022-23 7DAYS EuroCup as it defeated Germani Brescia 80-63 at home. Joventut did many things well and, above all, it shared the ball much better than its opponent.

Ellenson had 7 points in a 17-0 run that allowed Joventut to seal the outcome long the final buzzer. He led the winners with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Andres Feliz and Pau Ribas each added 10 points for Joventut. Amedeo Della Valle and John Petrucelli paced Brescia with 13 points apiece and Troy Caupain netted 11 for the visitors. Joventut finished the game with 23 assists and limited Brescia to just 7, in what was one of the biggest keys to the game.

The first quarter saw as many as 10 lead changes and at the end of it, Kyle Guy struck from downtown for a 23-22 lead. "It was a good victory against a very good team. I think the key was our defense. The team played very well, very aggressive in the pick-and-roll. I think Petricelli and Della Valle are very good pick-and-roll players and the team played good defense on that. And after that, we played well on offense. When you pass the ball, it is always easy with Ante \[Tomic\], Guillem \[Vives\], Andres \[Feliz\]. It is a good victory and I am happy for our people. Tomorrow is a bank holiday here in Spain. It is important for us that we have more people in the gym. For us, it is easier to play that way.

"Congratulations to the team. It was a good victory against a very good team. We had turnovers in the third quarter but in the last quarter, the team played very well on offense and very, very well on defense. In general terms, we played good defense. In the first quarter, in which they scored the most points, they dominated the boards and through that, they managed to hurt us. Like I said, the worst part was the third quarter in which we had 9 turnovers. Defensively, we stayed on the same line. If we play defense and are solid, positive things can happen. I think we did a very good job, especially against their backcourt, trying to make Petrucelli and Della Valle feel uncomfortable."

"It was a pretty tough game. For us, obviously, we need to be ready to understand the level of the physicality that we play in this competition, especially against such a good team as Joventut, built to compete until the end. They were able to take away the paint from us. We knew it and tried to share the ball. We knew that the three-point shots were one of the parts that could help us open and spread the floor. Obviously, our percentages tonight were not good enough to try to follow our game plan.

"Anyway, we were able to at least stay in the game for three quarters, but then there was a really tough break. We started the fourth quarter after a 0-7 break and even shot the ball at the end of the third quarter. We had some possessions to come back and lead the game and then, because of their experience, confidence and especially the physicality of their players, we were not able to compete for 40 minutes and this is something that we need to understand and work for, starting for tomorrow, because our team, a 12-player roster, we need to be able to try to perform and stay in the game for 40 minutes. It is not just our fault. I want to say good luck to Joventut for the season. They have a great team, and I am sure that they will compete until the end."

"I think just our will to come out in the fourth quarter, to get some spots \[helped us win the game\]. I think a couple of those steals, a couple of those rebounds, we were able to get in transition and lead us to some easy buckets. I give credit to our guards for getting their hands in the ball, Simon \[Birgander\] had some big blocks, we were able to hit a couple of shots in a row and get out on a pretty lead. I think that was kind of the difference tonight. There were a couple of times early in the game, in the first, second and third quarter, that we were up by 10 and they answered shots and came right back. In the fourth quarter, we were able to get that lead and hold it, because the whole night, they were able to answer. For me, my teammates gave me the ball and I score in positions, finding different spots. It feels good to get the first EuroCup win."

Zugic, who only turned 19 on September 18, is spending his second season with Ulm. He led the way against Umana Reyer Venice with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 4-of-7 on free throws to go with 5 rebounds and 1 assist.

Nunez only turned 18 on June 4 and he showed maturity beyond his years in amassing 9 points on 3-of-6 shooting and 3-of-5 on free throws - including the eventual game-deciding foul shot with 14 seconds left. He added 3 rebounds and 7 assists.
