MoraBanc Andorra tied a club record for steals and forced Joventut Badalona into a season-high in turnovers in claiming a 72-71 victory on Wednesday.

The home team came through with 13 steals, which marked the third time it had as many ball thefts in the EuroCup. And the 20 it forced Joventut into marked that club’s season-high – and just 3 off the most ever by Joventut.

Telling numbers: Metropolitans used steals, assists to break the game early

The hosts trailed 2-4 in the early going, but they soon took the reins of the game by pushing their opponent into several mistakes that turned into easy fastbreak points. Metropolitans had 7 steals off Hamburg's 10 first-half turnovers, while its opponent could convert only 4 of its opponent’s 8. That was good for a 53-32 lead at halftime that proved definitive.

The winners also found a very balanced offense to set the foundation of the victory, as they recorded 15 assists in the first 20 minutes and 25 at the end of the game, which allowed all Metropolitans players who played more than 3 minutes (10), fill the box score. Maxime Yiomi, who stayed just 2:56 on the court, was the only local player unable to score.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna snapped Umana Reyer Venice's three-game winning streak by registering a 72-83 road win on Wednesday night and sweeping their regular-season series in the process.

Virtus forced the issue inside the entire night. The visitors attempted 49 two-point attempts, which was also the third-most in club history. Led by Mam Jaiteh's 9-for-11 shooting, Virtus made 28 two-pointers for 57.1% accuracy.

On the other hand, Virtus fired just 18 three-pointers, more than 6 attempts below its average for the season, and sank only 5 for the night. But that did not matter, because the visitors did not let Reyer get it going from downtown.

Reyer relied heavily on its three-point shooting, making 10 long-range shots, but on 37 attempts for just 27.0%. Half of those makes came in the third quarter, the only quarter in which Reyer scored more than 16 points. Reyer was 5-for-13 from three-point range in that quarter, but 5-for-24 the rest of the game, including 2-for-17 in the first half.

Gran Canaria regained first place in Group B by defeating Frutti Extra Bursaspor 87-81 on Wednesday to snap a two-game losing streak. 

Gran Canaria beats Bursaspor 87-71 to return to first place

Gran Canaria, which qualified for the knock-out stage the day before thanks to other results, took control with an 18-5 run spanning the final two quarters. The victory raises its record to 10-4. Artem Pustovyi paced the winners with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Dylan Ennis added 16 points. Miquel Salvo scored 12 points, John Shurna chipped in 11 and Andrew Albicy contributed 10 points for the winners. Bursaspor lost its seventh straight road game to fall to 4-9 despite Derek Needham scoring 17 points. Onuralp Bitim, David Dudzinski and Andrew Andrews all tallied 16 points in the loss.

The three-pointers were falling early and often as Andrews and David Dudzinski hit for the guests before AJ Slaughter and John Shurna matched them for Gran Canaria. After Bitim’s triple made it 8-13, Shurna added another for the hosts to pull even 13-13. The teams kept striking from deep with Needham and Dudzinski draining triples for Bursaspor and Ennis made two from downtown. Dudzinski and Ennis both connected yet again and Bursaspor led 24-26 after 10 minutes.

 

The long ball barrage continued early in the second quarter with Miquel Salvo and John Holland each connecting from deep. Salvo took over the game for Gran Canaria with 9 straight points before Pustovyi came on and scored 4 points and put the hosts up 38-33. Bitim converted a three-point play for Bursaspor, but Pustovyi added 6 more points and a pair of Slaughter triples had Gran Canaria ahead 52-40. The score was 52-42 at halftime.

Bursaspor opened the second half with the first 5 points, including an Andrews triple. Needham followed later with a three-pointer and Dudzinski’s and-one had the visitors within 56-55. Gran Canaria buckled down in the final 3 minutes of the quarter with a 13-3 run including 5 points from Andrew Albicy to lead 71-60 after 30 minutes.

 

After Holland started the final frame, Albicy hit a triple and Pustovyi extended the advantage to 76-62. Needham scored 9 points as Bursaspor refused to go away with a 4-13 run to pull within 80-75 with 3 minutes left. Albicy came up with a big basket and Pustovyi made 2 free throws for an 84-77 lead with 102 seconds to play. Needham and Bitim both committed turnovers in the next two possessions and Bursaspor’s comeback hopes were done.

MoraBanc Andorra outscored Joventut 11-3 over the final 4 and a half minutes of the game to claim a valiant come-from-behind 72-71 victory over Group A leader Joventut Badalona on Wednesday at Poliesportiu D'Andorra.

Joventut led by as many as 9 points in the fourth quarter and it was 61-68 with 4 and a half minutes remaining before the hosts reeled off 11 straight points to take control of the game. Oriol Pauli led four Andorra scorers in double figures with 13 points and 8 rebounds in helping raise his team’s record to 8-6. Codi Miller-McIntyre added 11 points and 5 assists, Conor Morgan also scored 11 and Clevin Hannah had 10. Joel Parra posted 15 points and 9 rebounds for Joventut in defeat.  Andres Feliz scored 14 and Ante Tomic 12. The loss dropped Joventut to 11-3 for the season.

Pauli opened the scoring with a tip-in for the hosts and Parra got Joventut on the scoreboard with a free throw. Pauli continued to shine with a three-pointer and a steal and slam to make it 11-6. The teams traded baskets with Andorra holding on to a slim advantage until Simon Brigander scored twice in a 0-7 Joventut run as the visitors took their first lead, 15-19. Back-to-back threes by Morgan and David Jelinek put Andorra back in front. Brandon Paul briefly gave Joventut the lead again before Drew Crawford beat the buzzer to make it 23-22 after 10 minutes.

 

Nacho Llovet’s layup and another three by Morgan gave the hosts a 6-point cushion early in the second quarter. Derek Willis sparked the visitors with a basket in the lane, a steal and an assist to Guillen Vives for a three-pointer. Parra completed the comeback to put Joventut up 31-32. The teams traded shots and leads with Joventut going in front by as many as 3 before Miller-McIntyre’s layup to end the half brought Andorra within 40-41.

Tomic put his stamp on the game by scoring the first basket of the second half and soon dishing to Feliz. The combined for the next two Joventut baskets and a 46-50 lead. After another basket by Tomic put Joventut up by 8, Andorra called timeout. Free throws by Llovet and a steal and layup by Mario Nakic halved the deficit. A hook shot by Vladimir Brodziansky and a free throw by Feliz made it 53-59 through three quarters.

 

Brodziansky buried a three to begin the fourth quarter as Joventut went up by 9. Miller-McIntyre and Pauli drove for the next two baskets to keep the hosts within striking distance. Joventut was held scoreless for 3 and a half minutes and Miller-McIntyre free throws got Andorra within 59-62. Parra’s three-point play gave the visitors a 61-66 cushion midway through the quarter. Miller-McIntyre fouled out shortly after, but Andorra kept the pressure on. A three by Crawford and Hannah’s steal and dish to Pauli for a slam made it 67-68. Morgan completed the comeback with a triple with 2 and a half minutes remaining. That would be the final relevant basket of the game as Crawford iced the game from the line with 2.1 seconds remaining. Paul sank a three at the buzzer, but it was not enough.

Boulogne Metropolitans 92 claimed its fifth win in a row by overwhelming visiting Hamburg Towers 85-62 at Marcel Cerdan on Wednesday night.

A balanced attack and effective defense on Caleb Homesley allowed the hosts to build a double-digit lead after 10 minutes, which grew to 21-points at halftime and reached a game-high 30-point advantage in the second half. The winners improved to 9-5 and were led by Tomer Ginat, who posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds to record a career-high PIR of 25. He was well accompanied by Will Cummings, who chipped in 17 points in 22 minutes, and Lahaou Konate and Miralem Halilovic, who contributed 14 and 12, respectively. Lukas Meisner set the tone for the visitors with 17 points, followed by Jaylon Brown who scored 14 points in the losing effort as Hamburg dropped to 5-8.

Eddy Edigin got the visitors going with consecutive inside baskets, as the hosts found Jordan McRae and Ginat to take a 6-4 lead after 4 minutes. The first three-pointer of the game by Konate preceded a transition layup from Cummings that capped a 9-0 boost that prompted Hamburg to call a timeout down 11-4. Meisner and Homesley helped the visitors stop the bleeding, but the home team had already started its engine. A three-point play by Ginat and a triple by Assemian Moulare allowed the hosts to build a 26-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Moulare kept rocking after the break and chained together a couple of buckets that Halilovic followed with a layup to extend the gap to 32-15. Brown came to the rescue for Hamburg by nailing back-to-back threes and Meisner showed up inside to bring the visitors within 32-23, but the rally suddenly stopped when Cummings completed a basket-plus-foul for the hosts. Metropolitans took the reins again by exploiting Hamburg’s struggles in long-distance shooting and ball circulation and reconstructed a solid advantage, 49-28, after back-to-back threes by Konate. The margin stood at 53-32 at halftime.

The outlook didn’t change much after the intermission as Cummings and Vince Hunter made it 57-34. The visitors were unable to find momentum neither on offense nor on defense, making the task easier for Metropolitans. Brown tried to reactivate his team, but Cummings and McRae counterattacked to cap a couple of fastbreaks and dig it even deeper, 67-40. Konate set a 30-point margin from the line soon after, but a late 0-7 spark helped Hamburg avoid further punishment, entering the last stanza trailing 70-47.

Osaro Rich extended the visitors’ run to 0-9 right after the game resumed, but Metropolitans reacted in style with back-to-back inside baskets by Halilovic, a mid-range jumper by Sy and a corner three by Tony Crocker to recover a 30-point advantage, 79-49, with less than 7 minutes remaining. With the outcome in no doubt, both teams swapped baskets for the rest of the game, as the hosts took advantage of it to grant some rest to their starters. The only three-pointer of the night from Homesley sealed the score at 85-62, which turned into the second-lowest scoring game for Hamburg this season.
