With monster night, Omic becomes EuroCup's rebounding king

The 7DAYS EuroCup officially has a new chairman of the boards as Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana center Alen Omic became the competition’s all-time leader in career rebounds.

Omic corralled 21 rebounds and scored 11 points in Cedevita’s 76-68 loss at Umana Reyer Venice. It was a historic night for many reasons for the 30-year-old Slovenian big man.

The veteran center surpassed Valencia Basket's Bojan Dubljevic as the EuroCup’s rebounding king with 776 rebounds to Dubljevic’s 764. Omic grabbed 15 defensive rebounds to surpass Dubljevic’s 497 with exactly 500 defensive boards for his career - the first player to reach that mark. Those feats came one week after he became the EuroCup’s all-time leader in offensive rebounds, too.

His monster effort against Reyer saw him come within 1 rebound of the competition's single-game rebounding record, too. That record belongs to Lazaros Papadopoulos with 22 boards for Dynamo Moscow against Aris Thessaloniki on December 7, 2004. Omic is only the third player to collect at least 20 rebounds in a EuroCup game. Aside from Papadopoulos, Aleksandar Radojevic tallied 20 rebounds for Telekom Bonn against BCM Gravelines in December 2002.

Omic also moved into seventh place on the all-time EuroCup scoring charts during the game. He passed Alex Mumbru, who is now the Valencia Basket head coach, and finished the game with 1,199 points.

This is Omic’s ninth season in the EuroCup. He debuted with Olimpija Ljubljana in 2013 and has also played for Gran Canaria, Unicaja Malaga, Hapoel Jerusalem, Joventut Badalona and JL Bourg en Bresse. He won the EuroCup with Unicaja in 2017 and was named to the 2015-16 All-EuroCup First Team.

He is also the EuroCup all-time leader in two-pointers made (487), second in performance index rating (1,712) and tied for seventh in games played (118).
