FC Bayern Munich had recorded one win in five games before its Round 33 showdown against Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade. On Friday night, the German team delivered a terrific game at exactly the right time.
Bayern bounces back at the right time
Once ALBA Berlin lost in Istanbul earlier in the evening, Bayern needed a four-point win without overtime to make it to the next round. Things did not look good for Bayern at the beginning of the game, as Zvezda led 15-18 at the end of the first quarter and managed to tie the game, 25-25, with under 6 minutes left in the first half. But then Bayern showcased its best basketball at the right time, outscoring Zvezda by 38-18 in the next 16 minutes, up until the end of the third quarter. Several players stepped up throughout the game, which is a good sign going forward.
First DeShaun Thomas took over for Bayern with a put-back basket, a three-pointer and a jump hook in an 11-2 run that put his team ahead for good, 36-27. When Zvezda changed its defense, Vladimir Lucic, Augustine Rubit and Darrun Hilliard each buried a three-pointer to boost Bayern's margin to 42-33 at halftime.
To make things worse for its opponent, Bayern found a new go-to guy in the third quarter, Ognjen Jaramaz, who scored 9 points in 3 minutes to break the game open, 59-43, late in the third quarter. Rubit finished the game with 22 points, Thomas had 16, Jaramaz 12 and as many as seven different players struck from beyond the arc in an all-round team victory.
