Mike Tobey has completed a move to Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, signing a one-year deal with the Serbian club. Tobey (2.13 meters, 28 years old) averaged 5.9 points, 2.9 rebounds and a 6.0 PIR in a bench role for FC Barcelona last season, in which he started 12 out of his 31 appearances. The American-born big man displayed his ability to score from all three levels during the 2022-23 campaign, shooting 72.6% on two-pointers, 41.2% from three-point territory – from a total of 68 attempts – and 100.0% on free throws. Tobey heads to Serbia for the first time in his career, and this will be his first European experience outside of Spain. He is Zvezda's fifth signing so far this summer.

A successful career in Spain
After making his professional debut with the Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte Hornets' affiliate team, in the G League in the 2016-17 season, Tobey ended up finishing the campaign with Valencia Basket in Spain. Despite only joining in March 2017, Tobey ended up securing himself a Spanish League winners' medal just a few months later.
From there, he spent the 2017-18 season with fellow Spanish side Tenerife, before returning to Valencia in the summer of 2018. Having already tasted success in his first spell at Valencia, Tobey became a BKT EuroCup champion with the team in 2019. Then, last summer, he moved to Barca and went on to lift the Spanish League title once again this past June.
With the Slovenian national team, Tobey has also helped the team reach the semifinals at the 2020 Olympic Games and the quarterfinals at the 2022 EuroBasket. He has earned plenty of recognition at the international level for his play with Slovenia's star point guard, Luka Doncic.
An active summer for Zvezda
Tobey is the latest player to join Zvezda so far in this offseason, following Dejan Davidovac, Marko Simonovic, Milos Teodosic and Adam Hanga through the door. It doesn't look as though Zvezda is finished just yet, too, with a number of players also rumored with the Serbian club.
