Dovydas Giedraitis to miss time for Zalgiris, Lithuania
Zalgiris Kaunas has confirmed that guard Dovydas Giedraitis suffered a torn thigh muscle during his team’s Lithuanian Cup semifinal triumph over BC Siauliai on Saturday. As such, he will be unavailable for the Lithuanian national team’s EuroBasket qualifiers against Poland (Thursday, February 22) and Estonia (Monday, February 26).
What’s more, Giedraitis is expected to miss time upon the resumption of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, with Zalgiris taking on Olympiacos Piraeus on March 1 before facing Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on March 7. Zalgiris’s official channels will confirm any update regarding Giedraitis’s health.
Giedraitis has become a key player for Zalgiris since Andrea Trinchieri arrived as head coach, with the 23-year-old’s defense making him a valuable asset for the Greens. Over the last four EuroLeague games, Giedraitis averaged 6.0 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.5 assists and a very impressive 2.5 steals per night. Those figures are all greater than his season averages of 4.5 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 steal per contest.
Birutis also unavailable
Another absentee for Lithuania’s EuroBasket fixtures is Zalgiris center Laurynas Birutis, who is dealing with ‘minor health problems’, although he should be available when the EuroLeague returns.
Zalgiris therefore has three players who are set to feature for Lithuania during the international window: Edgaras Ulanovas, Tomas Dimsa and Lukas Lekavicius.
