Efes blows past ALBA, 98-73

Anadolu Efes Istanbul got back on the winning track by downing the visiting ALBA Berlin 98-73 on Friday night. This win improved Efes to a 13-14 record, just one win behind 10th-placed Real Madrid, while already eliminated ALBA remained in last place, dropping to 4-23.
Efes took control of the game with a 13-0 second-quarter run, after which ALBA never got closer than 8 points the rest of the way. Jordan Nwora led Efes with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Rolands Smits finished with 17 points, Vincent Poirier scored 14, while Elijah Bryant and Derek Willis each scored 12. Shane Larkin had 8 points and dished 8 assists. Meanwhile, Yanni Wetzell scored 20 for ALBA, David McCormack had 13 points and Matt Thomas netted 10 in defeat.

Rodrigue Beaubois hit a jumper and Bryant scored 5 points, including a three-point play, but Matt Thomas nailed a triple before Wetzell scored 5 points, including a three-point play, to open 9-14 lead. But Efes scored the next 6 points, a run sparked by Bryant, before Smits and Nwora nailed back-to-back three-pointer to make it 21-16. ALBA tied it back up through Louis Olinde and Hermannsson, as the first 10 minutes featured six lead changes and five ties, but Efes ended up taking a 24-21 lead into the second quarter.
The trend continued in the second quarter, which Hermannsson opened with a three-point play, then Wetzell followed it up with a dunk. But Nwora answered with a three-pointer. Larkin fed Poirier for a dunk and Nwora for a wide-open triple, then back-to-back triples from Derek Willis opened 42-29 lead with 4 minutes left in the half. Justin Bean’s three-point play snapped a 13-0 run, and Olinde also had a three-point play, but Efes held 48-35 at halftime.
Poirier and Willis extended the margin to 16 points in the early going of the third quarter, but Wetzell had a three-point play and Thomas nailed a three-pointer to make it 53-43. Bryant answered with a three-point play, but McCormack’s three-point play got ALBA within 56-48. However, Nwora nailed another triple, later added a basket-and-1, then beat the end-of-the-quarter buzzer with a put-back layup to make it 68-55 after 30 minutes.
Procida had a four-point play that cut the lead to 70-59 early in the fourth, but Larkin nailed a three-pointer. McCormack and Poirier traded close-range baskets as the margin remained in double figures, before layups from Poirier and Wills made it 82-65 with exactly 5 minutes left. A three from PJ Dozeir and an acrobatic layup from Larkin broke the 20-point barrier, 87-65, before Efes closed out the game.
