Monaco holds off ASVEL, 78-83, to clinch home-court advantage for playoffs

AS Monaco survived a stern test from LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne at Astroballe and pulled away in the final minutes to win 78-83 and clinch fourth place at the end of the regular season and with it home-court advantage in the playoffs. Monaco improved to 21-13 on the season, while ASVEL bowed out of the competition for 2024-25 in 15th place with a 13-21 mark. Mike James paced the winners with 20 points, including 3 go-ahead free throws with 57 seconds to play, and 7 assists. Jordan Loyd added 16 points and 6 rebounds for Monaco. Neal Sako (20 points, 11 rebounds) and Andre Roberson (14 points, 12 rebounds, 3 blocks) stood out for ASVEL.

Roberson was a defensive wall for ASVEL early with a block and a steal in the first 2 minutes. His fastbreak layup got the hosts ahead 5-2. Roberson bagged another steal and Maledon added free throws to keep ASVEL on top. Daniel Theis evened things from the line and Loyd's jumper gave Monaco its first lead, 7-9. Loyd capped a 0-7 Monaco run from the line, but Sako scored on three successive possessions to bring about a Monaco timeout. James fired in a four-point play and then fed Jaiteh for a three-point play. Jaiteh scored again on the buzzer to make it 15-22 after 10 minutes.
Loyd extended the Monaco advantage to double figures with a three-pointer to start the second quarter and he soon added 3 more from the line. Sako remained a bright spot for ASVEL and Maledon drilled a three-pointer, but James came off the bench to keep Monaco in control. Roberson triggered a fastbreak with a block and David Lighty converted the layup to get ASVEL within 27-33. Robertson recorded another impressive rejection and Lighty knocked down a three to make it a 5-point game. Loyd got Monaco back on track and reached halftime leading 35-41.
Shaquille Harrison scored, fed Roberson for a three and then scored again only for Monaco and James to answer each time. Theis dunked to make it 45-53. Maledon took charge for ASVEL with 6 straight points to get the hosts within 2. Sako completed the comeback with a block at one end and a bucket at the other. Nando De Colo put ASVEL ahead, 57-55, with a pair of free throws. A tip-in at the third-quarter buzzer by Diallo tied the score at 57-all.
The lead went back and forth as Jaiteh dunked and Paris Lee made a three. A three by Matt Strazel and basket by Diallo pushed Monaco back in front. Roberson grabbed a tough offensive board and made a nifty layup to keep ASVEL close, 65-66. Baskets by Theis and Diallo gave Monaco some breathing room. After a timeout, Maledon knocked down a three as ASVEL kept the pressure on. Maledon banked in a shot to put the hosts up 74-73 with 2 minutes remaining. Strazel split free throws to tie it and James made it 74-77 from the line with 57 seconds to play. Maledon made a tough score for the hosts, but Strazel sank free throws at the other end. Maledon missed a shot to tie it and Loyd iced the game from the line.
