Monaco rallies back to defeat Efes, 69-81
AS Monaco came back from a double-digit deficit to beat Anadolu Efes Istanbul 69-81 in Round 8 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season on Thursday.
The visitors improved to 5-3 in the standings while Efes dropped to 4-4. Georgios Papagiannis paced the winners with 15 points, Jordan Loyd had 14 and Mike James added 12. Vincent Poirier led Efes with 14 points, Ercan Osmani scored 11 and Rolands Smits got 10.

James hit a three-pointer, then Efes responded with a pair of triples by Darius Thompson and Osmani for a 6-3 lead. Donatas Motiejunas followed Loyd's layup with a triple to restore a 6-8 Monaco lead. Elijah Bryant joined the three-point shootout, Motiejunas sank a jump hook and Vincent Poirier's consecutive dunks gave Efes a 13-12 edge. Jaron Blossomgame buried a three-pointer, Motiejunas scored again, then Poirier and Thompson each dunked for a 17-17 tie. James and Rodrigue Beaubois both struck from beyond the arc, Papagiannis dunked and Smits put Efes back in charge, 23-22, after 10 minutes.
Furkan Korkmaz stepped up with a fast-break layup early in the second quarter. Jordan Nwora answered from downtown, Papagiannis hit a jump hook and Elie Okobo put Monaco back ahead, 26-28. Smits rescued Efes with a corner three-pointer, then Matthew Strazel gave Monaco a 30-32 lead. Smits ignited the crowd with a dunk and followed Dan Oturu's alley-oop slam with a close basket, good for a 36-32 Efes advantage. Papagiannis answered with an alley-oop slam and Bryant's floater gave Efes fresh air at 38-34. Derek Willis beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer that boosted the hosts' lead to 41-36.
Loyd scored in penetration soon after the break and soon added a three-pointer that got Monaco within 43-41. Alpha Diallo improved Osmani's driving layup with a triple and soon added a jumper that put the guests in charge, 45-46. Beaubois banked in a floater, and got help from Osmani to restore a 51-46 Efes lead. Monaco improved its defense and Motiejunas kept the guests within 53-48. Nwota swished a catch-and-shoot three-pointer, making Monaco call timeout at 56-48. Osmani dunked to keep a 13-2 Efes run, as Blossomgame and Vitto Brown brought Monaco within 59-52 after 30 minutes.
Brown hit a floater early in the fourth quarter and Diallo banked in a running shot for a 59-56 Monaco deficit. Okobo capped a 1-11 run that tied the game again, 59-59, with over 7 minutes left. Diallo banked in a jumper off the dribble to complete the guests' comeback, 60-61. Okobo scored around the basket, Poirier matched that with a jumper and James sank a buzzer-beating shot for a 63-65 score. James banked in a wild corner triple and Papagiannis bettered Thompson's driving layup with a bomb from beyond the arc. Poirier dunked again and Papagiannis erased that with a tip-in for a 67-74 Monaco lead with 2 minutes left. Papagiannis blocked a shot and dunked at the other end to seal the outcome.
