Olympiacos sinks Monaco, 80-89, handing Spanoulis first defeat
Olympiacos Piraeus ground out a valuable 80-89 road win at AS Monaco in Round 13 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and improved to 9-4, while the French side dropped to 8-5 after its new coach Vassilis Spanoulis tasted his first defeat in the competition.
Frenchman Evan Fournier paced Olympiacos with 19 points, player of the game Shaquielle McKissic poured 18 while Sasha Vezenkov and Nigel Williams-Goss chipped in with 14 apiece.
The outstanding Alpha Diallo led Monaco with a game-high 21 points, with Jaron Blossomgame adding 12. Georgios Papagiannis netted 11, while Elie Okobo and Mike James added 10 each, the latter also racking up 12 assists.

The lead changed hands time and again in a physical see-saw contest played at a frantic pace, with Monaco dishing out 16 assists in the first half while Olympiacos sank 8 three-pointers from 18 attempts in the opening two quarters.
Papagiannis did a lot of damage in the Olympiacos paint early on, scoring 7 points in the opening 10 minutes, but James was largely stifled out on offense by his markers, although he dished out a barrage of assists for his teammates to convert from close range.
A pair of triples by Fournier gave Olympiacos a 53-58 lead midway through the third quarter, but Monaco hit back instantly and nosed ahead 71-70 early in the fourth, with Diallo making shots from all over as he continued his fine run of form.
A long-range slugfest saw the visitors turn the tide and carve out a 74-78 advantage as Monaco committed several costly turnovers down the stretch. It was lights out for the hosts after Sasha Vezenkov hit one from deep to give Olympiacos an unassailable 77-87 lead in the dying moments, sparking loud celebrations among a vociferous contingent of away fans.
Olympiacos finished on a commendable 14 of 32 from downtown and restricted Monaco to a mere 6 assists in the second half, having won the battle of the boards 36-31 as Vezenkov, Nikola Milutinov and Thomas Walkup grabbed 6 rebounds each.
Spanoulis, who won back-to-back EuroLeague championships with Olympiacos as a player in 2012 and 2013 as a player, thus tasted defeat against his former mentor Georgios Bartzokas, who led the Reds to that 2013 title. It came after Spanoulis enjoyed a dream debut last week when he celebrated an 88-91 win at his other former club, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, where he won Europe’s premier club competition in 2009.
