Shane Larkin featured for Anadolu Efes for the first time since Round 5 as his side thrashed Panathinaikos BC 93-67, but it was a team effort that saw the hosts thrive.

On Larkin’s return to action, Efes showed its array of talent to blow out Panathinaikos

[Anadolu Efes Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/anadolu-efes-istanbul/ist/) registered its biggest win of the season on Friday night, and it was against none other than former coach Ergin Ataman and the reigning champs Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens. [In a 93-67 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/efes-beats-up-panathinaikos-93-67/), Efes had a 29-point margin early in the fourth quarter and cruised to victory while totally outplaying the visitors.

The evening was even more meaningful for Efes because of the return of [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/), who had been out with an ankle injury and last played in Round 5.

"Happy to have everybody back on the roster for the first time after a long, long time," said Efes head coach Tomislav Mijatovic, while also commenting on the importance of Larkin returning to the lineup.

"\[Larkin\] is our franchise player, our team captain. Our guys did a great job in the past month and a half fighting for him and fighting for the team. It is not easy to play without your team captain. And today, the cherry on top: Shane came back, the effort and energy was there. This is the way we want to look in every game."

Efes had a 4-5 record without Larkin and has now improved to 8-7 with this resounding win over Panathinaikos, which suffered its biggest loss since Coach Ataman arrived in the summer of 2023.

"When you play against a great team that has a great coach, great leadership, you must give your best effort in every way, shape or form. And our guys did that today," Mijatovic stated about his team. "Everybody contributed tremendously, everybody gave their best, and everybody did it in the period they were on the court."

Larkin played 17:28 off the bench, posting 6 points, 3 assists and 2 rebounds. He was not much of the factor, and that was the story of the game. On Larkin's return, it was his teammates' effort that stood out.

[Jordan Nwora](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jordan-nwora/013363/) and [Vincent Poirier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vincent-poirier/004887/) got the team going in the first quarter as Efes opened the game with a 10-2 lead, with 8 of those points coming from Nwora.

[Ercan Osmani](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ercan-osmani/012710/) played a big role on both ends, then [Dan Oturu](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dan-oturu/012788/) and [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rodrigue-beaubois/006590/) took over, fueling a 14-2 run which Efes used to open a double-digit margin in the second quarter.

All along, [Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) orchestrated the offense to the tune of 9 assists and 0 turnovers, as well as 3 steals, while all 7 of his points came late in the game when Efes was fully in control.

When all was said and done, Beaubois finished as the top scorer for Efes with 16 points, while Nwora collected 15 points plus 8 rebounds, and Oturu scored 15.

"Tonight was a great teamwork, everybody contributed, everybody did a great job," Beaubois said. "We have the potential, but we need to have the mentality. Tonight we had it and we have to use this game to go forward."

Next week brings a double opportunity for Efes to build on this performance, with the two-time EuroLeague champion hosting the two Belgrade teams, first Crvena Zvezda, then Partizan.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul returned to winning ways in Round 15 after running past the visiting reigning champs Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens 93-67 on Friday night. Efes won the game after losing three out of its last four, while Panathinaikos suffered its second consecutive defeat of 18 or more points. Both teams now have an 8-7 record.

It was a game that marked the return of Panathinaikos coach Ergin Ataman to Efes, but also a return from injury for Shane Larkin, who missed the last nine games. Efes used a 14-2 second-quarter run to build a double-digit lead, then a 12-2 third-quarter run to break the 20-point margin and lead by as many as 29 as it cruised to victory. Rodrigue Beaubois finished as the top scorer for Efes with 16 points, while Dan Oturu and Jordan Nwora scored 15 apiece, with Nwora also pulling down 8 rebounds. Kostas Sloukas scored 15, and Cedi Osman had 12 points in defeat.

Efes opened the game with a big uncontested dunk from Vincent Poirier and a wide-open three from Nwora. After Mathias Lessort answered with a basket inside, Nwora scored from close range and another wide-open one from long range to open a 10-2 lead. Juancho Hernangomez and Osman cut the margin to 12-8, but Ercan Osmani hit one from the outside and Oturu made a layup to extend the margin to 17-8. Lessort muscled his way to score inside, sparking a 0-7 run during which Sloukas netted a three, but Beaubois knocked down the hosts' fourth three to make it 20-15 after 10 minutes.

A triple from Sloukas opened the scoring in the third quarter and made it a 0-7 Panathinaikos run as the visitors took their first lead of the night. Oturu had a three-point play and a tip-in to restore Efes's lead, and his layup opened a 29-24 lead. Ioannis Papapetrou and Rolands Smits traded three-pointers before another basket from Beaubois and a three-point play from Smits gave Efes its first double-digit lead, 38-28. Beaubois got hot, sinking a triple followed by a corner jumper with his toes on the three-point line to make it 43-28. A second-chance basket from Omer Yurtseven snapped a 14-1 run, and he had a dunk in a 0-6 run as Efes took a 45-34 lead into the break.

Hernangomez and Osman cut the deficit to open the third quarter, but only briefly. Poirier had a pair of dunks assisted by Thompson, followed by Nwora's three-pointer. Darius Thompson also facilitated a pair of steals, one led to a three-point play from Bryant, and the other to his own fast-break layup to open a 59-40 lead with 3:20 left in the third. Osman snapped a 12-2 run with a three-pointer, but Larkin scored his first basket of the night – a triple – and Thompson and Oturu made plays that led Efes to a 68-46 lead after 30 minutes.

Efes opened the fourth with a 7-0 run, which started with a tough jumper from Nwora and was capped by a triple from Larkin, opening a 29-point lead. Sloukas strung together 7 points on the other end – a pair of floaters and a triple – but Efes was well in control and ended up cruising to victory.

Efes is back to winning ways after running past the visiting reigning champs Panathinaikos 93-67 on Friday night. Efes won the game after losing three out of its last four, while Panathinaikos suffered its second consecutive defeat of 18 or more points. Both teams now have an 8-7 record. It was a game that marked the return of Panathinaikos coach Ergin Ataman to Istanbul, but also a return from injury by Shane Larkin, who missed the last nine games. Efes used a 14-2 second-quarter run to build a double-digit lead, then a 12-2 third-quarter run to break the 20-point margin and lead by as many as 29 as it cruised to victory. Rodrigue Beaubois finished as the top scorer for Efes with 16 points, while Dan Oturu and Jordan Nwora scored 15 apiece, with Nwora also pulling down 8 rebounds. Kostas Sloukas scored 15, and Cedi Osman had 12 points in defeat.

LDLC ASVEL has confirmed that team captain Charles Kahudi is out for the next four weeks after suffering a groin injury.

[LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/asv/) has confirmed that team captain [Charles Kahudi](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/charles-kahudi/kir/) will be out for the next four weeks due to a groin injury.

Kahudi, who has already announced that he will retire at the end of the 2024-25 campaign, has averaged 3.5 points and 1.2 rebounds in a bench role across 13 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague appearances this season.

"Charles Kahudi is suffering from pubalgia (a groin injury) and will be out of action for four weeks," ASVEL revealed in a tweet. "We wish him a speedy recovery."

As such, Kahudi will miss ASVEL's next five or six games, with the 38-year-old expected to be out until January 10, 2025, the date of the French team's Round 20 clash at Anadolu Efes Istanbul.

To date, all 151 of his EuroLeague appearances have come in an ASVEL jersey since making his competition debut in 2019-20, while he also appeared in the BKT EuroCup 31 times for ASVEL in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. His other 44 games in the EuroCup came while playing for Le Mans between 2009 and 2014.

[Anthony Randolph](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/anthony-randolph/005757/), a two-time champion in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague with [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/), has announced his retirement from basketball.

The 35-year-old made 168 appearances in the EuroLeague between 2015 and 2023 – 145 for Real Madrid and 23 for [Lokomotiv Kuban](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/lokomotiv-kuban-krasnodar/tiv/) – as well as playing 14 times in the EuroCup for Lokomotiv in 2014-15.

A staple of Real Madrid's best years, Randolph was part of the teams that won the 2018 and 2023 EuroLeague championships. 

In his eight EuroLeague seasons, he reached the Final Four on six occasions – once with Lokomotiv (2016) and five times with Real Madrid (2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023).

Randolph posted career averages of 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and an 11.5 PIR in his EuroLeague career. He was selected to the All-EuroCup Second Team in 2014-15 and the All-EuroLeague Second Team in 2015-16, which both came during his time with Lokomotiv.

The German-born American also represented Slovenia at international level, helping the nation win the 2017 EuroBasket tournament alongside Luka Doncic, who was also his teammate in Real Madrid's first team between 2015 and 2018.

Randolph started his professional career in the 2008-09 season in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors, where he stayed until 2010, before going on to play for the New York Knicks (2010-11), Minnesota Timberwolves (2011-12) and Denver Nuggets (2014-16). He made 252 appearances in the NBA.

**Geoff:** When I was listening to [EuroLeague & Friends this week](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmMh4X0ihEo), Asta Zukaite made a point that I wish I had seen earlier. So, big props to her. She compared the Zalgiris team that won the FIBA Saporta Cup and the EuroLeague in back-to-back years in 1998 and 1999 to this current Paris team, which obviously lifted the EuroCup last season. She also compared Tyus Edney to TJ Shorts. Another brilliant comparison. Anyway, I really think it's written in the stars for Paris this year.

I'm not sure if that means ending the campaign by hoisting the EuroLeague trophy, but either way, this season has already been special for the EuroLeague newcomers. Shorts is continuing to play at an MVP level, Nadir Hifi is regularly showing his incredible skill and quality, and there are several players – Tyson Ward, Mikael Jantunen and Collin Malcolm to name just three – who are winning players. As much as I have loved watching Theo Maledon this year, I think Tiago Splitter's squad keeps on charging in Lyon.

Geoff’s prediction: **Paris to win by 8, Hifi to score 20+.**

Paris is red hot. Historically hot. It has six more wins than ASVEL and is 14 places higher in the standings. So this is a slam dunk, right?

This game will be the first of two meetings between these teams in nine days, with the second coming on December 22 in the French League. ASVEL will host both games. Do I think Paris will win both? Nope. These teams are neck and neck in the French League. What’s more, Paris’s speed and style of play that has taken the EuroLeague by storm is not something ASVEL is unaccustomed to seeing. And ASVEL has won three in a row at home, beating Crvena Zvezda, Anadolu Efes and Real Madrid in order. ASVEL is deep, athletic and eager to bask in some of the glory that French basketball is seeing right now thanks to Paris and AS Monaco.

Frankie’s prediction: **ASVEL celebrates a narrow and exciting victory.**

**Igor:** It's the first all-French derby in the EuroLeague, and for me these are two of the most fun teams to watch this season. Paris is simply fascinating, with its pace and speed and led by TJ Shorts, the November MVP, running the show. That team has been winning over basketball fans from all over. On the other side, ASVEL is led by the 23-year-old Theo Maledon who has scored at least 23 points in five of his last six games, and has also dished at least seven assists in half of those contests. Then, there is also a fresh rivalry between these two teams, stemming from their French League clashes last spring, and both teams are also guided by young head coaches who are ready to think outside of the box. ASVEL's record is 5-9 but is 5-2 on its home floor, while Paris enters the contest on a 10-game winning streak. And I'm backing Paris to make it 11 in a row.

Igor's prediction: **Paris wins, both teams score at least 90 points.**

**Javi:** Paris enters this game on an amazing 10-game winning streak that should come to an end at the Astroballe. ASVEL simply has a complete package to use against Paris's strengths, starting by a star backcourt duo featuring Theo Maledon and Nando De Colo. Paris Lee has the experience and defensive skills to use against November MVP TJ Shorts. Andre Roberson has given ASVEL versatility and physicality, and the hosts rely on Joffrey Lauvergne and Neal Sako to make a difference in the paint. Paris is on a roll, playing unconventional basketball and being completely unpredictable, other than Shorts running the whole show. Unlike most opponents, ASVEL has played Paris before and knows what to expect, and it plays at home. ASVEL gets this one.

Milan is a very dangerous opponent right now and I am sure it arrives in its best moment."

"We had a negative streak and have started to win games. I think it is important to play together, to play well, as a team and keep building. We are still in December. All teams in Europe have ups and downs, with so many games in such few days. Therefore, it is important to build not just to win the game, but to improve day by day as a team, play as a team. This is what we focus on, and that should help keep winning games. The EuroLeague is a very demanding competition in which play a lot of games and cannot relax. But the Italian team provided some wizardry of its own in giving the new play-caller his first victory – thanks to a great mind frame.

Virtus needed a shocking [four-point play](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/videos/mm-bas-vir-tae2425-rs15/?feedId=62bac866d7681e7971f128d7&title=MOTOROLA%20MAGIC%20MOMENTS) by [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) with 1.9 seconds to play to knock off [Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 81-82](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/clyburn-saves-virtus-81-82-at-baskonia-to-give-ivanovic-victory-in-debut/) to snap its six-game losing streak. Ivanovic was very happy about how his team stayed in the game.

"I am happy, but we have players. Tonight we were very lucky to win the game. But one thing that I think is really important for this team now is to believe and fight, believe and fight until the end," said the 67-year-old Ivanovic, who took over at the helm at Virtus after Luca Banchi stepped down.

"We have faith, character and patience - to play with a little more patience and have a clear situation, especially when the game is being decided."

Dusko Ivanovic: 'Tonight, we had luck'

Ivanovic made two changes to Virtus’s starting lineup from the [Round 14 loss at home against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/crvena-zvezda-downs-virtus-on-the-road-87-94/), which was coached by interim head coach Nenad Jakovljevic – starting [Alessandro Pajola](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alessandro-pajola/006739/) and [Rayjon Tucker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/rayjon-tucker/012591/) alongside Clyburn, [Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) and [Ante Zizic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/ante-zizic/004554/).

The game was a special one for Ivanovic, who coached at Baskonia over four stints and patrolled the sidelines of the club for 273 EuroLeague games. In fact, this was the first time he faced Baskonia at Buesa Arena.

But Ivanovic was not thinking about sentimentality in the Round 15 encounter. He wants to take big steps in changing the mentality of the team as quickly as possible to still have a chance to fight for the playoffs when it’s all said and done.

The Montenegrin coach’s message has been received by the team – especially by the top players.

"Everybody knows our struggles this year. A win like this means everything," said Clyburn, who finished with 23 points. "We just kept playing - play by play. You can’t look at the scoreboard and think: oh, 5 or 6 points. It’s just play by play."

And Shengelia, who served as Baskonia captain for six seasons from 2014 to 2020, did not shy away from giving praise where it was due.

"All the credit goes to the coaches, too, in preparing the game in such a good way," the power forward said. "This win is very important, especially to get it on the road. It counts a lot. Getting a win in such an environment means we have something to build on now. I hope that we keep rolling."

The monkey is already off Ivanovic’s back as new coach, and Virtus already has a thrilling, momentum-building win. Now if it can just believe and fight for each game.
