Fantasy tips, Rounds 9-10: More games, more chances!

Here comes another double-round week! Everybody wins, as there will be loads of great Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games and a double chance to win in the [EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge](https://euroleaguefantasy.euroleaguebasketball.net/).

Instead of going for the obvious superstars, I have some recommendations that could help give you the edge in private leagues and the overall standings. Here are my recommendations for Rounds 9 and 10.

Trent Forrest, Carlik Jones, Toko Shengelia, Juancho Hernangomez and Shaquielle McKissic are featured in this week's article.

EuroLeague Fantasy tips: Rounds 9-10

### Toko Shengelia, Virtus Segafredo Bologna (14.9 credits)

[Toko Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/) earned October MVP honors last season, but he has taken off later in the current 2024-25 campaign and is playing at his best level of late, averaging 20.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and a PIR of 20.3 in the last three games. After Virtus started out 0-5, Shengelia has come to the fore in recent weeks to help his team improve to a 2-6 record. With against Real Madrid and Panathinaikos this week, expect Shengelia to get a lot of the ball, making him a good option in fantasy.

### Carlik Jones, Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade (13.8 credits)

[Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) came close to recording a triple-double last week during Partizan’s loss at Paris, getting 20 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists. Those are outstanding numbers when your team is limited to 71 points, so expect Jones to stay consistent now that he seems fully adjusted to the competition. His games against Barcelona and Milan should be a strong test.

### Shaq McKissic, Olympiacos Piraeus (9.3 credits)

When it comes to the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge, unlike in real-life basketball, [Shaq McKissic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shaquielle-mckissic/007853/) always lacked consistency. He has improved in that aspect this season, however, getting a double-digit PIR in six out of eight games this season. In the last three, McKissic has averaged 11.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and a PIR of 14.7. Great numbers for less than 10.0 credits, so expect him to keep up this level against ASVEL and Maccabi.

### Juancho Hernangomez, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens (12.7 credits)

Speaking of adjustments, [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) is showcasing his best basketball this season, making the most out of his versatility and deep range. In the last three games, Hernangomez has posted 12.7 points on 5-of-9 three-pointers, 5.0 rebounds, 1.7 steals and a PIR of 18.3. He has played an average of almost 35 minutes over the last two games and is a good bet heading into games against Maccabi and Virtus.

### Trent Forrest, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz (11.7 credits)

[Trent Forrest](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/trent-forrest/013367/) has adjusted to an existing core of players to become Baskonia's starting point guard this season, showcasing his driving skills and athleticism. He has been playing well lately, getting 22 points and a PIR of 20 against Milan, and reaching 17 points and a PIR of 14 against Barcelona in Round 8. Expect him to do better and better as Baskonia takes on Efes and Monaco – both at home – this week.

### Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul vs. FC Bayern Munich (18:45 CET)

Bayern (6-2) will attempt to maintain a share of first place with a tough trip to fellow co-leader Fenerbahce (6-2). Bayern’s usual suspect [Carsen Edwards](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carsen-edwards/011987/) showed his big-time mentality by scoring 6 points in the last minute to seal last week’s nervous win over Zalgiris, and he will again attempt to propel the German team’s league-best offense which averages 86.9 points per game. Fenerbahce is [without star guard Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/wade-baldwin-sidelined-with-hamstring-injury/) through injury and will therefore need another strong contribution from key man [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/), who has averaged 23.0 points during his team’s current three-game winning run. Fenerbahce will look to use its strong offensive rebounding (13.1 offensive boards per game, second in the league) to gain extra possessions, so Bayern will need the likes of [Johannes Voigtmann](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johannes-voigtmann/007201/) (5.5 rebounds per night) to stay strong in the paint.

### AS Monaco vs. Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (19:00 CET)

After ending a four-game losing streak in style last week, Zvezda (4-4) is targeting a road win against a Monaco team (5-3) that is also looking to string together consecutive wins. The Roca Team will look to produce the same kind of tough defense which allowed just 69 and 63 points in their last two games, while hoping that big man [Georgios Papagiannis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/georgios-papagiannis/005844/) can again control the paint after providing 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in last week’s triumph over Efes. Zvezda will look for leadership from do-it-all guard [Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/), who had 15 points, 8 assists and 6 rebounds to power an easy win over ALBA in Round 8, while [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/) is also settling into his stride to become a key presence in the paint after netting 14 points last week.

Round 9 Head-to-Head: Loyd vs.Canaan

### Olympiacos Piraeus vs. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne (20:00 CET)

On a high after last week’s Greek derby triumph, Olympiacos is gunning for a fourth straight win against an ASVEL team desperate to stop a four-game losing slide. [Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul/ulk/) has confirmed that [Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/) suffered a hamstring injury during his team's [73-77 win at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/fenerbahce-overcomes-de-colo-asvel-for-third-straight-win/) last Friday night.

Baldwin, in his first season at Fenerbahce after joining from Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, was forced off just 2:39 minutes into the Round 8 contest.

"Fenerbahce Beko Men's Basketball Team player Wade Baldwin IV suffered a hamstring injury in the LDLC ASVEL game played on Friday, November 8," Fenerbahce said in a statement.

"Following our athlete's check-ups at Acıbadem Altunizade Hospital, a stage one muscle injury was detected and treatment has begun. We wish Wade Baldwin IV a speedy recovery and hope he joins our team as soon as possible."

Through eight games to start the season, Baldwin has averaged 10.6 points, 2.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.1 steals and a 9.6 PIR, while Fenerbahce boasts a 6-2 record, joint best in the EuroLeague.

There were a lot of memorable moments across the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague in Round 8, but the Greek derby delivered like few rivalries in sports can. While [Evan Fournier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/evan-fournier/013380/) sank the shot that closed the deal for [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/?season=2024-25) as they beat the reigning champions, [Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/?season=2024-25), [89-94](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-claims-bragging-rights-in-rivalry-series-win-over-panathinaikos-89-94/) at OAKA, the game was largely decided in the details.  With both teams scoring an identical 1.12 points per possession, this was an extremely high-level game on the offensive end, filled with opportunistic plays in transition, unwavering shot-making from beyond the arc, and very few unforced errors.

By the end of the night, it certainly felt like the 10 additional scoring opportunities Olympiacos secured on the offensive glass compared to the 4 notched by Panathinaikos were the difference.  Offensive rebounding across the EuroLeague is at an all-time high this season as teams are pulling down a record 10.9 second chances per game. After dipping significantly after the move to a true league format during the 2016-17 campaign, teams have increasingly found ways to eke out advantages by crashing the offensive glass, even if the defense still secures the ball roughly a third of the time.

Part of what makes Olympiacos’s efforts in their Rivalry Series matchup so impressive is that it came against a team that is used to getting the biggest share of caroms in the EuroLeague. The table above lists the top teams in rebound percentage – the proportion of potential rebounds a team has secured – with their offensive and defensive percentages and ranks included to better understand how they got there.

Prior to Round 8, Panathinaikos was the best rebounding team this season by a comfortable margin by way of a group effort. While [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/) brings some unique qualities to the table, starting with his combination of agility and explosiveness for his size and ranks 16th in individual rebound percentage, Panathinaikos lands only two other players towards the back of the top 50 as they have gotten the job done by committee. Not only have they been productive in securing rebounds by using a team mentality, but they are currently tied with Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in scoring off rebounds, which match a modern EuroLeague record of 7.8 points off put-backs per game, frequently turning those second-chance opportunities into quick points.

Olympiacos fell just short of this list, ranking 12th in rebound percentage and faring right around average on both sides of the ball. Every team in the EuroLeague this season falls within 10% of one another in both offensive and defensive rebounding percentage – margins are very thin on the boards, even in a season where the spread across the league is wider than usual. Couple that with the parity in the EuroLeague and the minutiae can sometimes decide games. The fraction of a second a player has to finish their follow-through can make a big difference in how a rebound comes off the rim and, as a result, who can grab it and what they can do with it.  Closeouts, angles, deflections; there’s a long list of variables that can affect outcomes on the glass, but often a team can put luck on their side with consistent physicality.

At times, however, that is not enough – the competitiveness across the league flattens out any notion that "wanting it more" can be a differentiator.  Sometimes, the big man gets the board and that’s the end of the story – [Boban Marjanovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/boban-marjanovic/lmg/) and [Khalifa Koumadje](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/koumadje-khalifa/010791/) rank among the league’s top-three defensive rebounders percentage-wise and it is not hard to figure out why. Size and athleticism matter on the glass and for the league’s current leader in rebound percentage, the injured [Joel Bolomboy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/joel-bolomboy/009035/), it is even better to have both.

Rebounding in the EuroLeague may not be the chess match that tends to play out in pick and rolls, but sometimes it does not feel far off. At times, it is a hard-fought slugfest that still doesn’t give a team a meaningful advantage. However, it also sometimes defines what certainly feels like the game of the year to this point.

Did unusual Greek derby put the rest of the teams on notice?

Just minutes after the final buzzer of the first Greek derby of this Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, a thrilling [Rivalry Series game](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-claims-bragging-rights-in-rivalry-series-win-over-panathinaikos-89-94/) on Friday night, [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/?season=2024-25) head coach [Georgios Bartzokas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/bartzokas-georgios/?season=E2024) spoke the truth about the game that just finished.

"It was an amazing game, great quality from two very good teams," the Olympiacos coach told EuroLeague TV.

The clash between [Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/panathinaikos-aktor-athens/pan/?season=2024-25) and Olympiacos had everything that each Greek derby usually has.

It had a fantastic atmosphere and packed stands. There were plenty of emotions on the floor and great hustle from everyone involved. There was high drama, a come-from-behind effort, and this game had big plays and clutch performances, just about what every Greek derby offers.

However, this clash also had something that high-stake, emotionally-charged games such as this one rarely have: scoring, and a lot of it.

Olympiacos Piraeus forward Sasha Vezenkov spoke to EuroLeague TV after his team's win at Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens in Round 8 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

Sasha Vezenkov: 'I missed this derby so much'

Friday's game, an 89-94 road victory for the Reds from Piraeus over Panathinaikos was the highest-scoring non-overtime Greek derby in the modern EuroLeague. In none of the previous 21 games this century had the two teams scored as many points in 40 minutes of basketball as they did in this one.

The fast-paced game featured a total of nine scorers in double figures, and the two teams combined for 54 assists. The winners shot 12 for 24 (50.0%) from three-point range, but the hosts had an even better percentage shooting from downtown, albeit making one fewer triples, 11 for 21 (52.4%).

### The curious case of the third quarter

"Our execution on offense was great," Bartzokas said, while [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) who finished with 20 points explained: "Panathinaikos is a great team, it is a little bit difficult to limit them, but we played great on offense."

What really made this collision of two prime EuroLeague contenders so great was that players made plays, rather than succeeding thanks to opponents' mistakes.

And the third quarter will surely be remembered above the rest.

It was the highest-scoring quarter in the Greek derby this century, one which Panathinaikos won 33-30. It was the most points Panathinaikos has scored in any quarter in games against Olympiacos, and the reigning champs did so by making 10-of-10 two-pointers and 4-of-6 threes. The Greens dished 13 assists during those 10 minutes and committed just 2 turnovers. Ergin Ataman's side also did not have a single rebound that entire quarter.

Meanwhile, Olympiacos pulled down 5 rebounds during in the third quarter, including 3 on the offensive end, as they shot 8 of 10 on two-pointers and 4 of 6 on three-pointers. The Reds had 10 assists, too.

"This is the highest level of EuroLeague basketball. I think whoever watched was really happy with these two great teams," Bartzokas said.

### Moving forward

The two teams kept trading blows as the game was going down to the wire, and in the end it was the heroics of [Evan Fournier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/evan-fournier/013380/), who scored 8 of his 22 points in the final 3 minutes of the game, that decided this game.

There was also the feeling that this win meant more for Olympiacos than the loss did to Panathinaikos.

Yes, you never want to lose on your home floor against your archrival, but Panathinaikos has been acting, and playing, with the peace of mind of a reigning champion. The team was on a three-game winning streak heading into this one and seems to be gelling its new pieces quite nicely as we put the first quarter of the regular season behind us.

For Olympiacos, however, the win is a confirmation that the team is on the right path following heavy investments into the roster over the summer. This is now three straight wins in a super-tough stretch that has seen the Reds beat [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-beats-real-madrid-79-69-in-rivalry-series-clash/), [FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-cruises-past-barcelona-95-74/) and now Panathinaikos.

And for a team that aims for one thing and one thing only, after Final Four appearances in each of the last three seasons, these statement wins were much needed.

Heading into a double-round week, sitting with 5-3 records, both teams will look to build on what they showcased on Friday as they aim to keep climbing up the standings. There is a long way to go, but this game gave all the fans a taste of what we could expect later in the season.

The Greens and the Reds might not have the best records in the league at the moment, but after seeing the level of basketball in this early-November matchup, it is hard to imagine these two teams not being heavily involved come the end of the season.

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv announced on Saturday that center [Jasiel Rivero](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/jasiel-rivero/011214/) is expected to miss the next two to three weeks with a partially torn hamstring.

The 31-year-old big man suffered the injury late in his team’s [loss at Virtus Segafredo Bologna](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/virtus-grinds-out-hard-fought-win-over-maccabi-84-77/) on Friday and the tear was confirmed after an MRI on Saturday. Rivero will be reexamined this weekend.

Rivero, who hails from Cuba, is in his third EuroLeague season and second with Maccabi. He has averaged a career-high 11.4 points on 65.5% two-point shooting and 5.8 rebounds for a PIR of 16.2 this season. This marks the latest injury setback for the Israeli champs, who for the first time had both of their centers available on Friday. [Wenyen Gabriel](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/wenyen-gabriel/013383/) had missed the team’s first seven games with a knee injury.

It has been a great week for three-time Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion [Sergio “Chacho” Rodriguez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sergio-rodriguez/cvm/), who was inducted to [EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/ea7-emporio-armani-milan/mil/?season=2024-25)'s Hall of Fame on Thursday night.

Back in July, Euroleague Basketball’s Javier Gancedo and Dominik Cromack traveled to Rodriguez's basketball camp in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain, to talk about his legendary 20-year career, focusing on his EuroLeague years with Estudiantes, [Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/?season=2024-25), CSKA Moscow and Milan. The result is an 11-minute feature called ‘Chacho’ in which Rodriguez looks back on his biggest achievements in European club basketball.

"Chacho" won two EuroLeague titles with Real in 2015 and 2023, and also lifted the trophy with CSKA in 2019, becoming the first Spanish-born player to win the EuroLeague with a foreign club.

He was chosen as the 2013-14 EuroLeague MVP, even though he did not win the competition that season. Rodriguez went to as many as nine Final Fours (in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2023, 2024 with Real; in 2018 and 2019 with CSKA; and in 2021 Milan) despite playing in the NBA for five seasons, which prevented him from having even more spectacular numbers this side of the Atlantic.

In addition, Rodriguez was named to the 2017-18 All-EuroLeague Second Team, won domestic league championships in Italy, Spain and Russia, and was an Olympic medalist, as well as a EuroBasket and world champion with the Spanish national team.

Above all, "Chacho" was universally loved by teammates, media and fans for his unique love of the game. Enjoy this feature documentary, and expect more ‘Chacho’ features in the near future.
