Tribute to the Champs: Marius Grigonis

One of just a few survivors from the Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens side that finished 17th in the 2022-23 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, [Marius Grigonis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/marius-grigonis/002328/) had an integral role for head coach Ergin Ataman in 2023-24 as the Greens ended their 13-year wait to become champions once again.

In his sixth EuroLeague season, the 30-year-old Lithuanian was one of just three Panathinaikos players – along with Mathias Lessort and Jerian Grant – to play all 41 games for the club this season; he was named as a starter a team-high 36 times. Grigonis averaged 9.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists for his best campaign in scoring since his last two seasons at Zalgiris Kaunas (2019-21) and his best-ever year in rebounding.

Grigonis proved himself to be a reliable option for Coach Ataman from day one, netting 17 points in Round 1 against archrival Olympiacos Piraeus and reaching double figures in points in four of the next six games. While much of the spotlight was on Kostas Sloukas, Kendrick Nunn and Lessort, Grigonis kept his head down and regularly made winning plays for a Panathinaikos squad that was a team-inspired under the leadership of Ataman.

The impact of Grigonis’s play helped Panathinaikos lock up the second spot in the regular-season standings. Although he saw a dip in his minutes in the Greens’ playoff series against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv after an 11-point night in 24:27 minutes in Game 1, his 8 points in Game 4 in Belgrade proved to be crucial in forcing a Game 5 back at OAKA.

At the Final Four, he had 6 points and 3 assists in Panathinaikos’s semifinal triumph over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, then had just 1 rebound in 6:40 minutes, his lowest time on the court all season, during the Greens’ championship game victory against Real Madrid. Grigonis surely would have liked to have had a greater impact in the title decider, but his contribution throughout the entire campaign was vital in helping Panathinaikos recover its former glories.

### Real sweeps Murcia, regain Spanish League title

Real Madrid is the Spanish League champion! Real conquered its 37th Spanish League title by topping UCAM Murcia 73-84 in Game 3 to sweep the best-of-five series, rounding a perfect domestic season: Los Blancos also won the Spanish Copa del Rey and the Spanish SuperCup. Dzanan Musa led the winners with 18 points. Mario Hezonja added 17 while Facu Campazzo had 13 for Real. Dylan Ennis led Murcia with 18 points.

Musa and Hezonja helped Real get an early 3-9 lead. Ennis rescued Murcia and Yannis Morin gave his team its first lead, 19-17, at the end of the first quarter. Murcia soon boosted its margin to double digits, 38-28, on a jumper by Moussa Diagne. Real got within 40-32 at halftime. Ennis hit his fourth triple for a 51-42 Murcia lead. Hezonja and Campazzo each hit a three-pointer and Musa struck twice from beyond the arc in a 2-16 run that pur Los Blancos in charge, 53-58. Musa and Hezonja kept pacing Real and Alberto Abalde made it a double-digit lead, 56-66, after 30 minutes. Murcia quickly got within 64-69 but Real improved its defense in crunch time and Musa's layup sealed the outcome, 67-79, with 2 minutes remaining. 

### Monaco keeps French League crown

AS Monaco has won its second consecutive French League title! Monaco successfully defended the French League crown by overwhelming this season's BKT EuroCup champion Paris Basketball 76-115 on the road in Game 4 of their best-of-five series. Monaco won the series 3-1. Mike James led the winners with 27 points. Elie Okobo added 23, Mam Jaiteh had 14 while Matthew Strazel and Jordan Loyd each had 12 for Monaco. T.J. Shorts, Collin Malcolm and Mikael Jantunen led Paris with 12 points apiece. Justin Simon and Nadir Hifi each added 11 for the hosts.

Monaco started the game completely on fire, as James had 12 points in a 0-19 opening run that gave the guests full control. Malcolm tried to ignite Paris's comeback with consecutive baskets but James got help from Jaiteh and Loyd to keep Monaco way ahead, 18-37, after 10 minutes. Monaco stayed fully focused, with the only goal of finishing the series right away. The guests boosted their margin to 37-63 at halftime and then again to 55-93 at the end of the third quarter, getting plenty of time to celebrate a well-deserved win that allowed Monaco to lift the French League trophy1 

### Fenerbahce beats Efes, claims Turkish crown

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul is the Turkish League champion! Fenerbahce claimed its 11th Turkish League crown by topping Anadolu Efes Istanbul 80-72 in overtime in Game 4 of the best-of-five finals, winning the series 1-3 in front of its fans at Ulker Sports and Event Hall. Tarik Biberovic led the winners with 19 points. Nigel Hayes-Davis had 12 of his 16 points in overtime to make sure Fenerbahce lifted the trophy. Scottie Wilbekin added 12 points while DyShawn Pierre had 10 for Fenerbahce. Elijah Bryant led Efes with 20 points. Shane Larkin and Rodrigue Beaubois each added 11 while Derek Willis had 10 for the guests.

Pierre struck from downtown and Wilbekin added back-to-back three-pointers in an 11-0 opening run. Biberovic had nine unanswered points in an 11-0 run that boosted Fenerbahce's lead to 26-8 early in the second quarter. Efes finally found a go-to guy in Beaubois, who scored around the basket and added a couple of three-pointers, sparking a 0-14 run that Larkin capped with a layup for a 32-26 deficit. Bryant and Derek Willis brought Efes even closer, 36-33, at halftime. Willis dunked to tie the game, 41-41, right after the break. Ercan Osmani soon completed Efes's comeback, 47-48. The guests led 51-52 after 30 minutes but Nick Calathes and Pierre each struck from beyond the arc for a 61-55 Fenerbahce lead midway through the fourth quarter. Dogus Ozdemiroglou and Bryant fueled a 1-9 run, then Hayes-Davis's jumper sent the game to overtime, 64-64. Hayes-Davis hit back-to-back three-pointers, adding a pair of free throws and a couple of baskets to led Fenerbahce to the Turkish League title! 

### Panathinaikos beats Olympiacos; ties Greek League finals

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens survived a do-or-die situation in the Greek League Finals by downing archrivals Olympiacos Piraeus 85-88 in Game 4 of the best-of-five series. Panathinaikos bounced back from a 0-2 deficit in the series and forced Game 5, to be played at OAKA Altion on Friday. Kendrick Nunn paced the winners with 25 points. Jerian Grant and Mathias Lessort each added 15 while Kostas Sloukas had 12 for the reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champions. Giannoulis Larentzakis led Olympiacos with 13 points. Isaiah Canaan, Kostas Papanikolaou, Alec Peters, Nigel Williams-Goss and Filip Petrusev each added 11 for the Reds.

Thomas Walkup hit a triple and Papanikolaou added a driving layup for 5-0 Olympiacos lead. Ioannis Papapetrou and Nunn each struck from downtown, then Lessort gave Panathinaikos its first lead, 9-10. Papanikoloau and Walkup kept pacing the Reds, getting help from Nikola Milutinov to restore a 22-17 lead after 10 minutes. Sloukas hit one from beyond the arc for a 23-24 Panathinaikos lead early in the second quarter. Williams-Goss and Shaquielle McKissic fueled a 7-0 run that gave Olympiacos fresh air at 30-24. Larentzakis joined the three-point shootout to make it a double-digit game, 42-31. Dinos Mitoglou, Sloukas and Grant kept the Greens within 51-44 at halftime. Nunn allowed Panathinaikos to regain the lead, 54-55, soon after the break, and got help from Lessort to boost the Greens' margin to 61-64. Canaan's triple fixed the score at 64-64 after 30 minutes. An unstoppable Nunn restored a 71-77 Panathinaikos edge with over 6 minutes left. Peters and Papanikolaou brought Olympiacos back in the game, 83-85, in the next-to-last minute. Lessort and Williams-Goss each split free throws, then Grant made both attempts to seal the outcome. Papankolaou missed from beyond micourt at the buzzer. 

### Bayern closer to German League glory

FC Bayern Munich regained the home-court advantage in the German League finals by edging ALBA Berlin 63-67 in Game 3 in the German capital. Bayern leads the best-of-five series 2-1 but ALBA hosts Game 4 at Uber Arena, home of the 2024 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four, on Friday. Andreas Obst led the winners with 14 points. Carsen Edwards added 12 for Bayern. Matt Thomas led ALBA with 17 points. Sterling Brown added 13 for the hosts.

Bayern had a good start, as Leo Bolmaro's three-pointer gave the guests a 0-5 lead. Tim Schneider led an 8-0 run that gave ALBA its first lead, 8-5. Nick Weiler-Babb, Obst and Devin Booker each struck from downtown to put Bayern ahead, 14-17, after 10 minutes. Obst insisted from beyond the arc and Issac Bonga's three-pointer boosted the guests' lead to 14-23. ALBA found a go-to guy in Yanni Wetzell, who almost singlehandedly restored a 27-26 lead. Edwards put Bayern back in charge, 28-31, at halftime. A wild four-point play by Thomas made ALBA regain a 36-35 lead. Once again, Bayern used three-pointers to regain the lead, as Serge Ibaka, Obst and Weiler-Babb put their team ahead, 45-48, after 30 minutes. Wetzell gave ALBA its last lead, 51-48. Vladimir Lucic, Bonga and Obst fueled a 0-13 run that put Bayern way ahead, 51-61, with over 4 minutes left. ALBA tied it again, 61-61, on a three-pointer by Thomas but Obst and Edwards took care of business in crunch time. 

### Zalgiris ends season with tough loss 

Rytas Vilnius is the Lithuanian League champion. Rytas edged Zalgiris Kaunas 88-87 in Game 4 to win the best-of-five series 1-3 and claim its seventh Lithuanian League crown. Marcus Foster paced the winners with 32 points on 6-of-7 three-pointers. Edmond Sumner led Zalgiris with 21 points. Laurynas Birutis added 19 and 9 rebounds, Lukas Lekavicius had 16 points while Arnas Butkevicius got 10 for Zalgiris, which hit just 8 of 29 three-pointers (27.6%) in the Lithuanian capital.

After a slow start, Rolands Smits gave Zalgiris its first lead, 13-14, midway through the first quarter. Butkevicius followed a triple with a basket-plus-foul, getting help from Tomas Dimsa and Lekavicius to keep the guests in charge, 23-24, after 10 minutes. Rytas boosted its margin to 61-53 soon after the break, then Zalgiris got within 70-65 after 30 minutes and took a 76-77 edge on a three-pointer by Lekavicius. Foster hit his sixth triple for an 83-81 Rytas lead, Lekavicius scored again and Dovydas Giedraitis put Zalgiris in charge, 86-87, with 26 seconds left. Foster hit the game-winning shot, as Lekavicius missed at the other end.

Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot's 2023-24 season highlights

The 2023-24 campaign was Luwawu-Cabarrot's first full season in the EuroLeague after making 24 appearances with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan in 2022-23. That season with Milan marked Luwawu-Cabarrot's return to the European continent. He debuted professionally as a teenager with Antibes in his native France and spent one season at Mega Basket in Serbia before playing the bulk of his career in the NBA. Across the pond, he averaged 5.9 points and 2.0 rebounds over 342 career games with the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Chicago Bulls, Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks. He also spent time in the G League with Delaware and Long Island.

During his career, Luwawu-Cabarrot helped Antibes return to the French top flight in 2013 and win the ProB Leaders Cup in 2015. With Mega, he won the Serbian Cup in 2016, and he helped Milan win the Italian League championship in 2023. Luwawu-Cabarrot has also been a regular with the French national team, with which he won silver medals at the 2020 Olympic Games and EuroBasket 2022.

Tribute to the champs: Aleksander Balcerowski

[Aleksander Balcerowski](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/aleksander-balcerowski/007553/) has been one of the most promising big men in Europe for many years. He is one of two players to win the EuroCup Rising Star award twice, claiming it in 2021 and 2023 while playing for Dreamland Gran Canaria. This season, Balcerowski became the first player to win the EuroCup and the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, in that order, in consecutive seasons.

Balcerowski's father Marcin was a semi-professional player before a severe car crash left him wheelchair-bound. He went on to become a star wheelchair basketball player, and when Aleksander signed for Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens, Marcin came out of retirement to sign for the Greens’ wheelchair team, allowing them to play for the same club team for the first time in their careers. All that surely made Aleksander's winning experience even more special.

2023-24 EuroLeague highlights: Olek Balcerowski, Panathinaikos

Despite not seeing playing time during the Final Four, Balcerowski helped the team a lot throughout the regular season, scoring three times in double digits and getting a season-high 12 points in Round 6 against FC Barcelona. Balcerowski averaged 2.8 points on 62.9% two-point shooting, 1.3 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 24 EuroLeague games this season despite stepping on court less than 8 minutes on average. 

He ranked sixth in blocks per 40 minutes (2.2) in the EuroLeague this season. At age 23, Balcerowski is one of the youngest players to win the EuroLeague and the EuroCup and has a bright career ahead of him!

Olimpia Milano now has a 2-1 lead in its Italian League Finals series against Virtus Bologna after winning 81-78 at the Forum on Tuesday night.

Mirotic helps Milano take 2-1 lead in series against Virtus

With the series having shifted to the Forum, EA7 Emporio Armani Milan was able to take advantage of playing in front of its own fans by beating Virtus Segafredo Bologna 81-78 to take a 2-1 lead in the Italian League finals. Milan won Game 1 in overtime in Bologna, but Virtus responded in Game 2, so this Game 3 victory means Ettore Messina’s side needs just one win to clinch the Italian championship.

Nikola Mirotic starred for Milan with a game-high 21 points, with Shabazz Napier adding 14, Shavon Shields netting 13 and Diego Flaccadori scoring 12. Nicolo Melli may have had just 6 points, but he did grab a game-high 9 rebounds. For Virtus, Jordan Mickey was the team’s leading scorer with 17 points. Toko Shengelia and Iffe Lundberg both had 11 points, while Marco Belinelli chipped in with 10.

There was almost no separating the two teams for the majority of the night, starting right from the first quarter. Milan was able to hold a narrow lead in the early going, yet Virtus twice went ahead (10-11, 12-13) just past the halfway point of the opening stanza. As it turned out, that would prove to be the only moment in which Virtus would be in front in the first half. Although it remained tight in the remainder of the quarter, a Devon Hall three-pointer right at the end of the period ensured Milan led 29-25 at the end of the first 10 minutes.

Virtus remained on Milan’s coattails in the second quarter but could never find a way to tie the score. Then, with under five minutes to go before halftime, back-to-back three-pointers by Napier and Stefano Tonut allowed Milan to take a seven-point advantage, 41-34, a game-high lead which it then matched after two points from Mirotic, 44-37, with 1:41 remaining. However, a triple by Alessandro Pajola managed to make it a 46-44 ballgame at the break.

In the opening minutes of the third period, Belinelli brought Virtus level, 46-46, but a similar story to the first half resumed – Milan staying ahead by the slimmest of margins. In fact, it wasn’t until a Johannes Voigtmann three-pointer set a 58-54 score that the hosts were able to lead by more than one possession, which came with 4:23 to go in the quarter. Milan then extended that lead to five points, 62-57, after a couple of free throws by Shields and a score by Flaccadori, following a surge by Virtus that saw the visitors get within two. At the end of the third quarter, Milan led 62-59.

Milan had managed to hold on to its lead for most of the game, but Virtus caused a scare early in the fourth when Bryant Dunston put Luca Banchi’s side in charge, 62-63, with 8:54 remaining. Napier soon reestablished Milan’s lead, then it was Mirotic and the American guard who later helped the hosts go six points up, 71-65, with 6:30 left. Virtus refused to go away and trimmed the gap to 71-70 on the back of a triple by Achille Polonara and a score by Lundberg, but Milan once again found a way to take charge, going 75-70 ahead with four minutes to go. In the final stages, Shengelia made it 79-76 with 1:15 left, then scored again to make it 79-78 with 40 seconds on the clock. Then, Mirotic kept his cool from the line by going 2 for 2 with 12 seconds remaining and Melli blocked Lundberg’s three-point attempt as Milan came away with an 81-78 triumph.

Markus Howard among those who made history this season

Several single-season records were beaten or threatened during the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague campaign with [Markus Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/markus-howard/011948/) of Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz leading the way. Howard set the record for most points in a EuroLeague season with 759. He moved past Alexey Shved, who had the record at 740 points from the 2017-18 season with Khimki Moscow Region. Only two other players have scored at least 700 points in a EuroLeague season: Sasha Vezenkov, who scored 703 with Olympiacos Piraeus in the 2022-23 campaign, and [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) of AS Monaco, who netted 700 points this season.

Howard breaks single-season three-point record

It comes as no surprise that Howard won the [2023-24 Alphonso Ford Top Scorer Trophy](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/baskonias-markus-howard-wins-the-2023-24-alphonso-ford-top-scorer-trophy/). He also set a record for most three-pointers in a season by burying 148 shots from beyond the arc. Shved had the previous record with 107 three-point shots made with Khimki in the 2017-18 season. [Scottie Wilbekin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/scottie-wilbekin/006661/) also passed Shved with 122 triples this season to rank second all-time. [Isaiah Canaan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/isaiah-canaan/010612/) of Olympiacos Piraeus is now fourth on that list after making 94 three-pointers this season. 

Howard attempted 370 three-pointers, which is also a record. He took 46 three-point shots more than Shved in the 2017-18 campaign. Howard also set a record for most field goals attempted, 589, which were 2 more than Shved six years ago. He was second all-time in field goals made with 254. Vezenkov made 261 during the 2022-23 season.

### Nebo, Lessort also broke records

The battle for the single-season record for most offensive rebounds went down to the wire and [Josh Nebo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/josh-nebo/011199/) of Maccabi grabbed it. Nebo finished the 2023-24 EuroLeague season with 120 offensive boards. [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) of Real Madrid held the record since the 2020-21 season with 118 offensive rebounds, followed by [Vincent Poirier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/vincent-poirier/004887/) of Baskonia with 117 in 2018-19 and [Mathias Lessort](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mathias-lessort/003842/) of Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade with 116 in the 2022-23 season.

Lessort also set the single-season records for fouls drawn (274) and free throws attempted (267). The Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens center shattered the first record, which previously belonged to Keith Langford of UNICS Kazan (223) in the 2016-17 campaign. Lessort also attempted 60 free throws more than any other player in the EuroLeague in any season. James and [Dzanan Musa](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/dzanan-musa/006540/) of Real Madrid shared the record, attempting 207 free throws each in the 2022-23 season.

Here are some of the 120 offensive rebounds, often finished with dunks, that Jish Nebo of Maccanbi Playtika Tel Aviv grabbed during the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season.

Lessort almost managed to break another record: the highest PIR ever in a EuroLeague season. He amassed a PIR of 805, only behind Vezenkov in his MVP season, 2022-23, which he finished with a PIR of 859. He also tied with [Johnathan Motley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/johnathan-motley/011157/) for second place in most two-pointers made in a EuroLeague season, 204, trailing Jalen Reynolds, who scored 222 shots inside the arc for FC Bayern Munich in 2020-21.

[Codi Miller-McIntyre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/codi-miller-mcintyre/009048/) had an impressive EuroLeague debut season in which he set the single-game season for most assists, dishing 20 against LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne on February 8, 2024, a night in which he also became the third player ever to record a triple-double in a EuroLeague game. Miller-McIntyre was also very close to setting a single-season record in assists. His 284 were 2 shy of [Nick Calathes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nick-calathes/001932/), who had 286 assists playing for Panathinaikos in 2018-19. 

[Moustapha Fall](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/moustapha-fall/008811/) of Olympiacos made 78.9% of his two-point attempts, which ranked him second among players with more than 50 attempts inside the arc in a EuroLeague season. Only Tavares did better, sinking 79.4% of his two-point shots in 2018-19. Nebo finished the season with 276 rebounds, which is the third-most in a EuroLeague campaign, only trailing Tavares (289) and Poirier (282).

Grant, whose brother Jerami just completed his 10th season in the NBA, whose father Harvey spent 11 seasons in the NBA and whose uncle Horace won four NBA championships, is the first member of the distinguished family to compete in the EuroLeague. He first came to Europe’s premier competition in 2001 with EA7 Emporio Armani Milan as a reserve. 

The following season, Grant moved to Turk Telekom Ankara where his full range of talents were on display in the BKT EuroCup. He became the EuroCup MVP after leading Turk Telekom to the final. Coach Ergin Ataman dueled against Grant in Turkey and made him a key acquisition when the former took charge at Panathinaikos and Grant fit the team’s needs perfectly.

For the season, Grant averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 41 games. He made 41.6% of his three-pointers and was third in the league in steals. Grant was one of Ataman’s most trusted players at the Final Four in Berlin. He scored 13 points in the semifinal win over Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and then tallied 11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals in the championship game against Real Madrid. Grant played the second-most minutes in the championship game (32:38) and led all players with a +/- of 18 to establish himself as a worthy champion.
