Olympiacos BC returned to the top of the EuroLeague standings after a stellar performance by Alec Peters, who went a career-best 8 for 9 from downtown en route to a career-high 33 points.

Alec Peters thrived in Olympiacos’s enforced small-ball system at ALBA

Georgios Bartzokas saw his frontcourt options run out heading into [Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/olympiacos-piraeus/oly/)'s Round 33 road game against ALBA Berlin. With both Moustapha Fall and Nikola Milutinov sidelined with injuries and Moses Wright having recently returned from long-term absence, [Alec Peters](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/alec-peters/008829/) was assigned with the tough task to fill in by featuring at center position on Friday night.

Wright did start and netted 8 points in 13:47 on the floor, but it was Peters who carried the team on his shoulders. The Olympiacos forward helped the guests to stretch the floor and thrived in the chaos that was created in ALBA’s defense. Peters went a career-best 8 for 9 from deep, recording a career-high 33 points in just 24:32.

Yet, when asked about his sublime outing at Uber Arena after the game, he demonstrated why his mentality and work ethic have allowed him to compete at the highest level.

“It’s a great game – career high,” Peters told EuroLeague TV. “But I think what’s sticking with me is that I had like 0 rebounds. I know there’s going to be some people that’ll give me sh\*t about that. There’s always stuff to get improved on.”

Surprisingly, his PIR of 30 was not the highest for the visitors, with [Nigel Williams-Goss](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/nigel-williams-goss/007982/) pulling off another extraordinary performance as Olympiacos’s main floor manager in Thomas Walkup’s absence. The 30-year-old guard registered a season-high 22 points to go with 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for a career-high PIR of 32.

More importantly, this win saw the Reds climb back to the top of the standings and end a three-game losing slide.

“I think we were kind of in a little bit of a funk after three losses,” Peters admitted. “It didn’t matter how we did it, we just needed to get it done. We needed to get the win to put us back in first place to control our destiny in the last game.

“It’s just kind of an energy boost for the team going into the playoffs. You’ve spent this whole season grinding, trying to be the best team, trying to show you’re the best team. Being first after the regular season I think is important for the club.”

A victory at home against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv in the last round of the campaign will be enough for Olympiacos to clinch the top seed for the second time in three seasons. 

Both Fall and Milutinov are expected to return to action next week, but Peters proved on Friday night that he can thrive in a small-ball lineup that offers Olympiacos an ace up its sleeve – a potential curveball for the Reds' opponents in the playoffs.

Virtus Segafredo Bologna dominated from start to finish, sinking the visiting EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 90-70 on Friday night. The win in the Italian derby improved Virtus to 9-24 ahead of the final round of the regular season, while this loss eliminated Milan, which dropped to a 16-17 record, from postseason contention.

Milan scored the first basket of the game, but that happened to be one of only two field goals in the first quarter, at the end of which Virtus led by double digits and never looked back. Matt Morgan led the scorers on the winning team with 16 points. Tornike Shengelia had 14 points, Will Clyburn and Ante Zizic scored 13 points apiece, while Nicola Akele had 10 points. Zach LeDay led Milan with 19 points, while Stefano Tonut and Giampaolo Ricci scored 10 apiece in the loss.

Freddie Gillespie opened the scoring with a dunk, but that was the only basket Milan scored in the opening 5 minutes. Meanwhile, Will Clyburn scored 7 points on the other end, including a transition triple, to help Virtus open a 9-2 lead. Milan made 5 free throws but no field goals, while Clyburn and Tornike Shengelia scored inside and Matt Morgan from the outside to open an 18-7 advantage. The visitors ended their drought with a put-back layup from Guglielmo Caruso, but Marco Belinelli’s buzzer-beating jumper made it 22-9 after 10 minutes.

Shavon Shields opened the second quarter by making a floater, but Shengelia hit a jumper and set up Momo Diouf for an easy dunk and a 15-point margin. Shengelia had 5 more points, including a triple to open 31-25, before Nikola Mirotic and LeDay hit a triple apiece and Shields drained a long jumper. A three-point play from LeDay cut the deficit to 37-27, but Morgan scored 5 points to end the half, including a three-pointer to make it 44-29 at halftime.

Akele scored 7 points in the first 3 minutes and 20 seconds of the third quarter, including a corner triple, to open a 53-32 margin. A triple from Daniel Hackett gave the hosts a 58-34 lead, before Mirotic, Tonut and Ousmane Diop got the visitors going. However, Isaia Cordinier’s triple helped the hosts take a 65-42 lead into the final quarter, during which the lead grew to 70-42 and 73-45 after a triple from Achille Polonara. Milan never got closer than 19 points the rest of the way.

Anadolu Efes Istanbul stretched its hot streak to seven successive wins with a thrilling 96-97 overtime road defeat of Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade, making a big step towards securing a top-six finish and an automatic playoff berth in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague.

Despite the loss, Zvezda was able to secure a play-in spot thanks to another result going its way, as EA7 Emporio Armani Milan lost any chance of overhauling the Serbian team after a 90-70 debacle at the hands of Virtus Segafredo Bologna in the Italian derby.

Efes improved to 19-14 ahead of the final round of games in the regular season while Zvezda slipped to 18-15 after a rip-roaring encounter at Belgrade Arena, with big man Vincent Poirier claiming the player of the game accolade on the back of 14 points, 3 boards and 4 assists.

Elijah Bryant paced Efes with 17 points and 8 rebounds, PJ Dozier added 13 points while Ercan Osmani netted 11 to go with 7 boards. Rodrigue Beaubois and Rolands Smits chipped in with 10 points each to underline a smooth team effort from Efes, as the Turkish side rallied from a 51-44 first-half deficit.

At the other end, Filip Petrusev scored 23 points and Isaiah Canaan netted 21 as Zvezda’s dynamic duo shined throughout, with Codi Miller-McIntyre and Nikola Kalinic both amassing 15 each for the Serbian outfit.

Miller-McIntyre generated Zvezda’s fast-paced start as he scored his team’s opening eight points which propelled the hosts into a 15-12 lead and Petrusev followed in his footsteps with a flurry of his own. Zvezda carved out a 24-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter as Petrusev sank 11 points and the high-scoring contest kept fans on their feet in the second, as both teams fired on all cylinders offensively.

Efes was able to turn the tide and nose ahead 36-40 midway through the second period but Canaan hit back with nine straight points, instigating an 11-0 run which enabled Zvezda to jump back into the driving seat at the interval.

The rollercoaster action continued in the third quarter as Rodrigue Beaubois took center stage for Efes, sinking 10 points to mastermind yet another change of momentum as the visitors went on a 4-20 run and took a commanding 55-64 lead. Zvezda replied with its own 9-2 streak, slashing the deficit ahead of the fourth quarter.  

Efes appeared to be in for plain sailing when it surged ahead 66-78 and was still firmly in control after Bryant hit a mid-range jumper to make it 78-85, but Zvezda had other ideas. Three-pointers from Kalinic and Canaan, who was unstoppable in the home stretch, had the hosts breathing down the visitors’ necks again and Yago dos Santos then forced overtime with an audacious coast-to-coast drive to the basket.

A Petrusev dunk gave Zvezda the lead at the start of overtime, 90-88, but Shane Larkin and particularly Vincent Poirier came back with a vengeance to turn the tables once again, as Efes carried a 93-97 advantage into the final minute of the absorbing clash.

There was still time for late drama, though, as Canaan hit another triple to haul Zvezda back and after Efes squandered its final possession, Miller-McIntyre came up short with a tough mid-range shot on the buzzer as the hosts failed to force a final twist.

Pablo Laso's men went up by double minutes less than seven minutes into the content and never looked back, even leading by 45 points (100-55) in the fourth quarter, which would have been a club-record win. Instead, it is the joint fourth-highest victory in Baskonia's history.

Markus Howard scored 25 points, Chima Moneke added 14 points, Trent Forrest poured in 13 points, and Tadas Sedekerskis and Khalifa Diop netted 10 points apiece. Melvin Ajinca was ASVEL's leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Theo Maledon with 13, and Nando De Colo and Melvin Ajinca with 10 points each.

Things were relatively tight in the early going, with Baskonia holding a slender 10-9 lead almost 4 minutes into the contest, but a 15-0 run by the hosts blew the game open as Coach Laso's squad held a 25-9 advantage with 2:32 to go in the first quarter. De Colo ended an almost four-minute stretch without an ASVEL score, but after Tarik Black responded to Donta Hall's finish inside, Howard's three at the buzzer ensured it was 30-14 after 10 minutes.

Baskonia kept on charging in the second quarter as Nikos Rogkavopoulos, Howard and Luka Samanic helped the hosts go 39-19 ahead. Howard continued his hot start to the game with five points in quick succession to move to 15 points personal and give Baskonia a 25-point lead, 46-21. Rogkavopoulos's swelled the lead to 26, 50-24, and it was 62-34 at halftime.

Maledon and Ajinca tried to inspire an ASVEL fightback at the start of the third, but Baskonia started to run plays for Diop, who netted three consecutive scores to make it 72-40. Howard's four-point play then extended it to 76-40. Baskonia was playing with the freedom that comes with confidence, leading by as many as 42 (92-50) with 35 seconds to go before ASVEL youngster Yohann Sissoko ended the quarter with a three, 92-53.

Coach Laso decided to let his star players, like Howard, Moneke, Sedekerskis and Forrest, rest in the fourth as the bench players got a chance to shine. Pavel Savkov, who finished with a career-high 8 points, gave Baskonia a 45-point lead at 100-55, while Joseba Querejeta got his first EuroLeague points on his second-ever appearance to make it 107-70 with 1:50 left. Baskonia was up 111-70 with 11:16 to play, then five points by Ajinca, Sissoko and Edwin Jackson set the final 111-75 scoreline.

## Postseason places decided

After Round 33 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, we now know the 10 teams that will be competing in postseason play.

Three sides – Olympiacos Piraeus, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens – have qualified directly to the playoffs, they are sure to occupy the top three spots and, thus, all three will have home-court advantage.

In Round 34, we will discover which three teams will join them in the playoffs, with one place in the top four (and home-court advantage) up for grabs,* as well as two direct passages to the playoffs.

Everything is to play for in the Play-In Showdown, too. Any teams that finish between seventh and 10th will take part in the play-in.

The seventh- and eighth-placed teams will face off in a single elimination game to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals against the regular season's second-ranked team.

Likewise, the ninth- and 10th-placed teams will play a single elimination game whose loser will be eliminated. The winner will challenge either the seventh- or eighth-place team, whichever has lost their play-in game, to decide the final playoff spot and be paired with the top-ranked regular-season team.

At the other end, Carlik Jones led Partizan on a game high 23 points. Partizan dropped to 16-17 after a fifth loss in its last six games. Zalgiris improved to 15-18 after clawing out the win in front of a fervent crowd in its last home game of the season.

But Maccabi surged back to win the game, the Israeli champ’s fifth victory in the last seven games for an 11-22 record. In the team’s final home game of the season, Jimmy Clark paced six Maccabi scorers in double figures with 20 points while Levi Randolph scored 17 points - including 4 free throws in the waning seconds. Bayern suffered a tough loss in its fight for home-court advantage in the playoffs in falling to 19-14 after sweeping the double-round last week. Edwards finished with 9 triples and 33 points in the loss.

Barcelona overturned a 15-point deficit to grab a vital road victory at Fenerbahce. Barcelona improved to 19-14 to boost its playoff hopes, while Fenerbahce dropped to 22-11 after ending an eight-game home winning streak. The opening stages were closely contested before Fenerbahce dominated the second quarter for a solid halftime lead, 50-39. But Barca rallied after the break and flew into the lead with a 0-11 fourth-quarter run which ultimately proved enough. Joel Parra was the inspiration with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Jabari Parker top-scored with 24 points. Nigel Hayes-Davis paced the hosts with 20 points.

Olympiacos Piraeus climbed back to the top of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings by defeating ALBA Berlin 92-100 on Friday night at Uber Arena. The visitors led by as many as 21 points (19-40) early in the second quarter, but the hosts fought back and took the lead, 90-87, with 2:42 left on the clock. Yet, Olympiacos responded with a 2-13 surge to end its three-game losing slide. The Reds improved their record to 23-10, while ALBA dropped to 5-28.

Alec Peters went 8 for 9 from deep to end the game with a career-high 33 points. Nigel Williams-Goss paired a season-high 22 points with 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 steals for a career-high PIR of 32, with Sasha Vezenkov adding 18 points. Yanni Wetzell netted a team-high 19 points, and Gabriele Procida and Matt Thomas scored 12 each.

Martin Hermannsson opened the scoring from inside, but a three-point play from Williams-Goss was followed by buckets from Moses Wright and Vezenkov for a 2-7 lead. Kostas Papanikolaou and Peters also opened their accounts to make it 9-18. Yanni Wetzell made the most of Olympiacos’s frontcourt absences and took his tally to 6 points, but triples by Peters and Williams-Goss opened a 13-28 lead. Matt Thomas scored 4 straight points on the other end, but Peters drilled another one and Vezenkov netted inside to make it 17-36 after 10 minutes.

Wetzell netted 5 consecutive points and Jonas Mattisseck drilled a long two that slightly cut the deficit to 24-40. But Giannoulis Larentzakis and Peters answered with back-to-back triples to restore a 26-46 lead. ALBA responded with an 8-2 surge fueled by Procida, who took his tally to 5 points. Yet, Vezenkov and Williams-Goss scored from deep to restore a 34-54 cushion. ALBA replied with back-to-back triples from Thomas and Robert Baker, but 5 points from Larentzakis allowed Olympiacos to maintain a 46-61 lead at halftime.

ALBA opened the third quarter with a 9-4 run, with Wetzell dunking in transition to bring the hosts within 55-65. Peters netted 8 points and Vezenkov scored inside, extending the lead to 57-75. But ALBA fought back, as Will McDowell-White nailed a triple and Justin Bean netted in transition before 3 points from Procida slashed the deficit to 73-80 heading into the closing quarter.

Louis Olinde and Bean drilled one apiece from downtown before an inside score by Wetzell put ALBA ahead, 81-80. Yet, Peters and Vezenkov nailed back-to-back threes to make it 81-86. McDowell-White scored an unlikely basket before 5 straight points by Thomas gave the hosts an 88-86 edge. But Williams-Goss scored a couple of baskets and Peters drilled his eighth triple of the night to put Olympiacos back in front, 90-94. Then, Saben Lee hit 2 free throws to practically seal the outcome.

Being aware that in Oaka Altion the Greens boast one of the most-feared arenas in the competition, where losing is more of a rarity for the hosts, the reigning champion made securing home-court advantage for the postseason their main goal.

After the game, a displeased Ergin Ataman didn’t hesitate to call out his players in his bid to provide his team with a wake-up call ahead of the playoffs.

"We are not playing good basketball, we play like veteran teams,” he said in the post-game press conference after the loss to Paris. “I talk like this now and in the locker room. It's also my responsibility, but we are not working well. Basketball is fighting, basketball is making defense. We're just making that when we are down. We only show effort in the last quarters; it was the same against ALBA, Maccabi and Olympiacos.”

And it worked. Ataman had previously slammed Panathinaikos’s poor starts to their games during the season, but this time, away at [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/roster/mco/?season=2024-25), his team was dominant from the off. The Greens hit the ground running and took a 21-32 lead into the second quarter.

The first quarter saw the visitors go an eye-popping 13-for-15 from the field and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Ataman’s side shared the ball well, finding open looks and recording 8 of their 18 assists in the first 10 minutes.

“Our first quarter was the key to the game, because we were perfect on defense and offense, \[where\] we found good shot selection,” Ataman said in the post-game press conference. “Starting the game like we did in the first quarter gave us confidence.”

Monaco went on a 16-0 run across the second and third quarter, cutting the difference to 48-49, but [Kendrick Nunn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/kendrick-nunn/012774/) came to the fore with 9 points and an assist in a 0-11 charge to regain a double-digit cushion. Panathinaikos never looked back.

“We came here with one job,” a locked-in Nunn, who netted 37, told EuroLeague TV. “To get the win on the road. It was a tough one, but we came out aggressive from the beginning and maintained it throughout the game. It’s definitely an advantage as we all know. And we need that. Like I said a few games before, treating every game like a playoff game from now on and for the rest of the season.”

There is no better way to bounce back from adversity in basketball than by grabbing a statement victory away at a fellow title contender. Panathinaikos’s performance at Monaco could serve as a springboard for the remainder of the season. Having gained momentum, the Greens are aware that clinching a top-four spot is a huge step towards their next objective: securing a Final Four spot.

And Ataman didn’t hesitate to remind opponents that Panathinaikos is one of the best home-court teams in the competition.

“Our first goal of the season was to keep home-court advantage in the playoffs,” Ataman told EuroLeague TV. “Now, we have one more game. We will try to finish the regular season in second or third position. We have the home-court advantage, so in OAKA it will be very difficult for all opponents to win in the playoffs. Playing this basketball, in this kind of a game, will give us a lot of positive things for the playoffs and the Final Four.”

With its victory on Thursday evening, Panathinaikos sent a clear message to the rest of the title aspirants: to win the trophy you first need to overcome the reigning champion.

Plus, there's something that Tiago Splitter has been able to convey: the enthusiasm of a rookie team, one that has nothing to lose and plays as a team, regardless of having very good players. That's something to appreciate about the opposing coach. I think Splitter has done a great job so far, and hopefully tomorrow we can beat a team that truly plays as a team."
