FC Bayern Munich kept its hopes of reaching the postseason very much alive with a gritty 64-58 home win over Zalgiris Kaunas in Round 29 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, largely thanks to yet another big performance from towering center Devin Booker.

The outcome also meant a sweet milestone for Bayern’s head coach Pablo Laso, who celebrated his 250th win in Europe’s premier club competition and was unaware of the accomplishment until the flash post-game interview.

“I didn’t even know, but \[it\] sounds very good,” said Laso, who coached Real Madrid between 2011 and 2022, winning two EuroLeague titles with the club. “I am very happy for the number but also for the victory, I thought our effort was very good. Defensively, we did a very good job leaving a EuroLeague team under 60 points.”

Booker was a menace all over the court as he mixed three-pointers with trademark points in the paint, outmuscling his markers time and again to rack up 20 points and 6 rebounds. He restricted the visiting team’s big man Laurynas Birutis to just 6 points as Zalgiris struggled to make shots against Bayern’s mobile and aggressive defense, prompting Booker to point out that rebounding was the key.

Bayern picked up 34 boards and 26 were on the defensive end, with Zalgiris only finding its range from downtown late in the game when the hosts were able to run the clock down.

“It all started with the defense,” commented Booker. “They are a team who loves to shoot so we just had to collect the misses. Before the game, Coach stressed how important it was to play defense. The first half was pretty solid and we stayed with it for the most part. We let up a little bit towards the end, but the good defense transitioned into offense.”

Guard Nick Weiler-Babb was another key performer for Bayern with 10 points, 4 boards and 3 assists, although he had a torrid time guarding Keenan Evans who paced Zalgiris with a game-high 21 points. Evans briefly rekindled the visitors’ hopes of turning the match on its head with 8 straight points in the dying minutes, but Zalgiris fell short of completing the comeback.

Nonetheless, Weiler-Babb heaped praise on Evans, a player whose skills he’s been all too familiar with for quite a while. “He’s a heck of a player, I’ve known him since I was a kid in high school,” Weiler-Babb said in his post-game interview. “We played together for a year and it’s always good to see a guy like that from our home state do so well. He is a high-caliber player and tough to guard.”

Zalgiris head coach Andrea Trinchieri lamented over his team’s poor performance on the offensive end as well as the visiting outfit’s inability to match Bayern’s aggression for the lion’s share of the contest.

“It was a very physical game and for three quarters we didn’t understand how to play against this number of contacts,” stated the Italian tactician. “We missed too many open shots and at the end of the day, Bayern deserved the win.”

ASVEL had seen its 18-point fourth quarter lead melt down to one with 29 seconds let before Lee waited in the corner for Nando De Colo’s pass and buried the shot with 4.8 seconds left to wrap up an 84-80 victory.

"That’s what we expect from him – to make big shots,” ASVEL forward Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot said of Lee, who had missed the game last week due to illness and did not start against Efes. “He just came back and we know he needs time to get his wind back. But he played great. He let the game come to him and made the big shot.”

### A morale-boosting victory

Lee’s triple saved ASVEL from giving away the game and it gave his team a second straight home win, as well as a 4-6 record in the 10 games since Pierric Poupet took over as head coach before Round 20.

“My players stayed together and they were focused. That made the difference,” said Poupet, who was an assistant coach under both previous coaches this season. “We played great for 34-35 minutes to give us a little advantage. I’m just proud of them. They deserved the win. And they deserve to enjoy the night.

“We all have to prove that ASVEL can be a EuroLeague team. Since January, we have done a good job bouncing back all together. We want to get more wins. But we need to stay humble, work and see what happens.”

ASVEL showed it has the personnel to dominate a game. For big chunks of the game, Efes had no answer for the big man duo of Youssoupha Fall and Mbaye Ndiaye. The former scored 8 points in the first quarter alone and ended with 10 points, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. The 25-year-old Ndiaye, meanwhile, chipped in 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks of his own.

Those two helped ASVEL win the battle of the glass 39-24, including 10 offensive rebounds, for a 13-8 advantage in second-chance points.

The October 2023 meeting between saw Efes prevail behind 19 points from Will Clyburn, who looks to be recovering his best form after scoring 17 and 21 in his last two, while ASVEL has been boosted by the return of Nando De Colo, who has scored 15 and 13 points in his previous two games back from injury.

ASVEL’s 15 turnovers nearly cost the team the win – including a fourth-quarter stretch of four turnovers within 62 seconds. Efes committed just 7 turnovers and built a 25-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

In the end, Luwawu-Cabarrot scored 21 points to lead the team and Deshaun Thomas collected 20 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for a PIR of 27, besting by 17 his top PIR this season and outdoing his previous high in points for ASVEL by 9.

“I am proud of my teammates for believing in me and trusting me and giving me the ball where I needed it,” commented Thomas, who joined the team in early January and made his debut in Round 22.

ASVEL has already been eliminated from making the postseason, but Poupet’s team can still play the role of spoiler. Four of ASVEL’s five remaining opponents are in the top 10 and the other, Valencia Basket, is currently in 11th place.

An unprecedented start to the season has led to Real Madrid punching the first ticket to the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Playoffs earlier than any other club.

The defending champions made sure they will return to the playoffs with a 74-89 road win over Virtus Segafredo Bologna on Friday night to amass a 23-6 record with five games left in the regular season.

If by qualifying in Round 29 Real hasn't quite matched the fastest arrival to the playoffs by any team in a 34-game regular season, in previous years the race was for eight spots, making mathematical qualification easier. This year, with just six guaranteed spots due to the new Play-In Showdown, teams need to clinch a spot in the top six to be assured of reaching the best-of-five playoffs.

Real's next goal will be to clinch a top-four finish to guarantee itself home-court advantage in the playoffs.

League-leading Real strive to end their surprising three-game losing streak with a trip to dangerous Virtus, one of three tied for fifth. The Italians has lost four of its last six and are again to count on Toko Shengelia for leadership, whereas the reigning-champs long for a return to form for Facu Campazzo.

**The champs took off early**

Head coach Chus Mateo's charges have taken direct aim at a title repeat from the get-go this season, only missing a 17-0 start in the regular season's first lap by a single point on a last-gasp turnover in overtime on the road. Otherwise, Real was flawless in the 2023 half of the regular season, winning 16 games by an average of 13.8 points.

Since then, Real has gone 9-5, including a 130-126 victory in the longest EuroLeague game ever, featuring four overtimes, against Anadolu Efes Istanbul; a 96-86 home win vs. Valencia Basket after one overtime; and a 106-101 shootout home victory against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv.

Real won its first 14 home games, matching its longest such streak in the EuroLeague this century, but was beat there twice in a row by double digits before alighting in Bologna to seal its playoff spot.

**Huge playoff experience**

Of course, Real will go into the playoffs, which start on April 23, with a wealth of postseason experience. Real will participate in the best-of-five playoffs for a 10th consecutive season, having broken through to the Final Four in seven of the previous nine occasions, including all six when it held home-court advantage.

Last season, Real became the first team ever to overcome a 0-2 deficit to survive a playoff series when it won the last three games against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade.

Besides returning 12 players who proceeded to win the EuroLeague title last season, Real has multiple EuroLeague champions in Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull and Sergio Rodriguez, who've lifted the continental trophy three times each, as well as Facundo Campazzo, Fabien Causeur and Walter Tavares, who have done so twice each.

With home-court advantage in its sights already, Real's subsequent goal will be to finish in first place, the position it has held throughout the season. Should that happen, even though it has been the first qualifier, Real will be the last team to learn its playoff opponent, which will only happen after the final game of the Play-In Showdown on April 19, four days before the playoffs are set to start.

Josh Nebo had 18 points, 13 rebounds, including 8 on the offensive end, and 3 blocks. Bonzie Colson scored 23 and Wade Baldwin had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Yago Dos Santos had 20 points and 7 assists for the hosts, but he left the game with 2 minutes to go after receiving a blow to the head and had to be taken to the locker room. Hanga had 13 points and 7 assists, Javonte Smart scored all of his 12 points in the first half, and Joel Bolomboy collected 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Monaco shrugged off a slow first quarter en route to an 82-90 victory at ALBA, which extended the Monegasque side's winning streak to eight games. Monaco took over with a 12-32 second quarter, though it was forced to fight at the end before improving to a 19-10 record, including a 9-7 mark away from home. Elie Okobo led the way with 21 points and Mike James added 20 points for Monaco, which has now won four straight road games. Monaco is strong in the running for the playoff spots. ALBA has dropped six straight games and remains in last place at 5-24. Matt Thomas picked up 14 points to lead the hosts in a losing effort. ALBA committed 21 turnovers to just 12 for Monaco, which attempted 74 field goal attempts to just 54 for ALBA.

Real (22-6) can become the first team to qualify for the playoffs by winning in Bologna. Virtus (17-11) is right in the fight to reach the playoffs, too, but faces a tougher path, which means that every home game counts more than ever for the hosts. Earlier this season, Real thrashed Virtus 100-74 in the Spanish capital behind 18 points, 6 rebounds, 11 assists and a PIR of 39 from Facu Campazzo. These clubs first faced each other almost 45 years ago, on December 13, 1979. Real beat Virtus 85-94 behind 35 points from Wayne Brabender. Virtus won arguably the most significant game between them, the 1989-90 Cup Winners' Cup final. Michael Ray Richardson led Virtus to a 79-74 win in Florence, Italy, under head coach Ettore Messina, only 30 years old at the time. Virtus has had a 4-3 record against Real since the turn of the millenium. Its last win in the Spanish capital came last season, when Virtus beat Real 91-95 on October 27, 2022 with 18 points from Iffe Lundberg.

### Real's current skid

Real is on a rare three-game losing streak. It features consecutive home losses, which had not happened since last season's playoff series against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. In order to find Real losing three straight regular season games, we have to go back to the 2021-22 campaign, with consecutive losses against Anadolu Efes Istanbul, Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv, Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens and FC Bayern Munich. Real had almost its entire roster available, only Rudy Fernandez missed some games. What has happened, then?

To begin with, Real stopped scoring fluently. These are much lower numbers than during the rest of the season. In the first 25 games, Real averaged 89.6 points on 58.4% two-point shooting, dishing 531 assists against 308 turnovers (1.72 assists per turnover). Real has a lot to improve but running its offense through its centers Walter Tavares and Vincent Poirier should be a turning point for head coach Chus Mateo's team.

### Virtus: No place like home

Virtus has been rock-solid at home throughout the season, losing just a couple games: against Zalgiris Kaunas on opening night and against AS Monaco. Virtus managed to win 11 consecutive home games in between those defeats. Meanwhile, Virtus is on a five-game road losing streak, with no wins away from Bologna since January 5, when it downed ALBA Berlin 68-83. Virtus has nine road losses. The only top-10 team with more is Fenerbahce (5-10).

Jordan Mickey averages 10.6 points on 35 of 64 two-pointers (54.7% 2FG), 4.8 rebounds and a PIR of 12.1 in 10 home games this season. On the road, Mickey averages 7.9 points on 18 of 42 two-pointers (42.9% 2FG), 4.1 rebounds and a PIR of 6.8.

Perhaps no other player shows that two faces better than center Jordan Mickey, who posts way better numbers at home than on the road. Mickey averages 10.6 points on 35 of 64 two-pointers (54.7% 2FG), 4.8 rebounds and a PIR of 12.1 in 10 home games this season. On the road, Mickey averages 7.9 points on 18 of 42 two-pointers (42.9% 2FG), 4.1 rebounds and a PIR of 6.8. It will be a special game for Mickey, one of four players to play for both teams in the EuroLeague since the turn of the millenium, along with Charles Smith, Marko Jaric and Stefano Attruia. Mickey had 8 points against Real in Round 7 but amassed a PIR of -1.

### Best Defenders battle at center

It is a very anticipated matchup. Real's Walter Tavares and Virtus's Bryant Dunston, two of the four players that won multiple Best Defender titles in EuroLeague history. Dunston won the award with Olympiacos Piraeus in 2014 and 2015, while Tavares was chosen as the competition's Best Defender with Real in 2019, 2021 and 2023. Dimitris Diamantidis (6 times) and Kyle Hines (3) are the other two players to win the award more than once. All of them are multiple EuroLeague winners, which kind of proves one of the biggest cliches in basketball: at least in the EuroLeague, defense wins titles.
