With a monster performance direly needed by a team short on bodies, center [Tyrique Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tyrique-jones/011981/) of Anadolu Efes Istanbul claimed the Round 12 MVP honor, the first such distinction of his young Turkish Airlines EuroLeague career.

Jones led Efes to [a 71-68 home victory over Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/anadolu-efes-istanbul-panathinaikos-aktor-athens/E2023/101/) with a performance index rating of 36, his best yet and the season's highest by any EuroLeague rookie. He finished the game with personal highs of 21 points, 13 rebounds, 4 steals, 8-for-12 two-point and 5-for-5 free-throw shooting. His 7 offensive boards equaled the season high among all EuroLeague players. Jones's first MVP of the Round honor came in just his 12th EuroLeague game.

Edwards scored a career-high 32 points, making 7 of 11 two-pointers, 5 of 10 three-pointers and 3 of 3 free throws in his team's 91-84 overtime victory over EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. In the same game, Ibaka posted a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds, hitting 5 of 8 shots inside the arc and 3 of 4 from downtown, including a deep one on a broken play to force overtime just before the fourth-quarter buzzer. Lauvergne had 23 points, 9 rebounds and 5 fouls drawn in a ASVEL's 91-94 home loss to Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv. [Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/) of Maccabi and [Shavon Shields](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shavon-shields/007831/) of EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, each with a PIR of 27, complete the top individual performances in Round 12.

Zalgiris Kaunas will spend the last month of 2023 without guard [Lukas Lekavicius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/lukas-lekavicius/003210/), who will have to remain sidelined for approximately one month due to appendicitis surgery, the club announced. Lekavicius (1.80 meters, 29 years old) is averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 assists in 11 appearances off the bench this season in over 11 minutes per game. Lekavicius went scoreless against ALBA Berlin in Round 12 in almost 11 minutes on the court. This is Lekavicius's 10th EuroLeague season, all of them with Zalgiris except for two - 2017-18 and 2018-19 - during which he played in Greece with Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens.

Lekavicius is expected to be back by the start of 2024. Zalgiris is currently in 14th place in the standings with 5 wins and 7 losses and it will next face fourth-placed AS Monaco at home on Friday.

By coming away with this win, Virtus now has an 8-4 record and is one game back of Barca, which dropped to 9-3. Iffe Lundberg paced Virtus with a game-high 21 points, of which 11 came in the fourth quarter, while Toko Shengelia and Daniel Hackett had 14 points apiece. For Barca, Willy Hernangomez and Jan Vesely were the only players to reach double digits in points, scoring 15 and 13, respectively.

Valencia claimed a hard-fought home win over Crvena Zvezda to put an end to a 5-game losing streak in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague after the visitors had wiped out a 16-point halftime deficit. Big man Brandon Davies paced Valencia with 21 points and forward Semi Ojeleye added 17 for the home side, which survived Zvezda's second-half onslaught despite shooting 1 of 14 from three-point range after the break. Nemanja Nedovic and Shabazz Napier scored 14 points each, Milos Teodosic added 11 to go with 9 assists for Zvezda.

In a game that came down to the final shot, Efes edged Panathinaikos 71-68 at Sinan Erdem Sports Hall on Tuesday. Efes improved to 6-6 with its fifth consecutive home win. Panathinaikos is now also 6-6. Tyrique Jones led the winners with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 4 steals for a PIR of 36. Shane Larkin added 20 points for Efes. Mathias Lessort and Kendrick Nunn paced Panathinaikos with 13 points apiece. Coach Ergin Ataman, who led Efes to back-to-back EuroLeague titles, returned to Istanbul to face his former team in his 400th game in the competition.

ALBA rallied from 16 points down to win a defensive battle 64-62 over Zalgirs thanks to Jonas Mattisseck’s three-pointer with 6.7 seconds left to snap a six-game losing streak. It was ALBA's only lead all game and boosted its record to 2-10. Zalgiris fell to 5-7. Johannes Thiemann led the winners with 16 points and Mattisseck finished with 8. ALBA grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and forced Zalgiris into 23 turnovers Dovydas Giedraitis scored 15 points and Tomas Dimsa had 11 for Zalgiris, but the marquee trio of Keenan Evans, Rolands Smits and Edgaras Ulanovas combined for 20 points - 17 below their combined average.

First-place Real duplicated its championship game victory of last spring by grinding out a 71-77 road victory over Olympiacos to improve to 11-1. Real nearly all the way but Olympiacos (6-6) hung around until the final stages, which were dominated by Real at both ends of the floor. Dzanan Musa led the scoring with 23 points on 5-for-7 three-point shooting, including 16 points in the third quarter. Mario Hezonja recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Walter Tavares scored 11. Olympiacos, which could only score 3 points in the final 5 minutes, was paced by Thomas Walkup with 17 points. Moustapha Fall was the only other home player in double digits scoring with 10 points.

Partizan improved to 6-6 and Monaco fell to 7-5. Kevin Punter paced the winners with 25 points, including a clutch three-pointer in overtime that gave Partizan the lead for good. James Nunnally crowned a fine individual performance with 23 points, PJ Dozier added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists while Bruno Caboclo chipped in with 13 points and 6 rebounds. At the other end, Donatas Moteijunas posted 23 points for Monaco, Mike James added 16 while John Brown and Alpha Diallo netted 10 each. A pair of three-pointers in the last 14 seconds of regulation time by James forced the dramatic extra period.

In an overtime thriller, Bayern grabbed its third consecutive victory by topping Milan 91-84. Bayern improved to 6-6 in the standings while Milan dropped to 4-8. Carsen Edwards paced the winners with a career-high 32 points. Serge Ibaka added 20 points and 12 rebounds, Nick Weiler-Babb scored 14 and Sylvain Francisco 10 for Bayern. Shavon Shields led Milan with 26 points. Devon Hall and Johannes Voigtmann each added 10 for the guests, who had led 70-76 lead already in the final minute of regulation time. After Edwards struck from downtown, so did Ibaka to beat the buzzer on a broken play and to force overtime, 76-76, after which Bayern took control.

Wade Baldwin produced a strong outing on Wednesday night and made some tough plays down the stretch to allow Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv to secure a 91-94 victory at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in Round 12.

[Wade Baldwin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/wade-baldwin-iv/009863/) produced a strong outing on Wednesday night and made some tough plays down the stretch to allow Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv to secure a 91-94 victory at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in Round 12. Maccabi raced to a 22-33, start but ASVEL responded with a 15-0 run to take a narrow 46-45 lead into the second half. That was followed by a back-and-forth affair after the break. It involved a total of 23 lead changes, with Baldwin stepping up when the visitors needed him the most.

The Maccabi guard missed the first five games this season through injury, but he has managed to grow into the campaign. His season-high 21 points against ASVEL might not be an extraordinary figure, but the fact that 7 of them came in the last 4:30 of the closing quarter speaks for itself.

His most crucial play on offense came with 0:11 left on the clock. Lorenzo Brown found Baldwin on the perimeter and the Maccabi star drove to the basket, past Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, and sank a tough layup to make it a two-possession game, 88-92.

 “I’m really happy for this team,” Baldwin said after the game. “We’re fighting through all the battles that we have to go through as a club. And we continue to show fight and we’re stringing some wins. When we get in our mode and our rhythm of playing fast, being tough, being aggressive, good things happen for us. In the first half, we allowed ASVEL to push us around a little bit. They have size in the ‘4’ and ‘5’ positions, but we adjusted and ended up winning the game.”

Baldwin didn’t just play a key role on offense. He also contributed on defense, especially in the last possession of the game. The hosts had the opportunity to send the game to overtime, as they needed to make a triple when Nando De Colo received the ball with three seconds to go. At that point, De Colo was on 22 points off the bench, having sunk 3 triples to overtake Jaycee Carroll for 12th place all-time with 438 career three-pointers made. The ASVEL star pulled up from behind the arc, but he was blocked by Baldwin, who sealed the victory for Maccabi.

“It was a helluva game,” Baldwin added. “ASVEL has a tough team with a new coach and they are trying to build. When you step on the arena with \[De Colo\], in my opinion, the best European guard ever played, it’s a battle. And I’m really honored I was able to make that stop.”

After grabbing its second consecutive victory, Maccabi will look to build on its momentum by ending the double-round week in style with a win away at Virtus Segafredo Bologna on Friday.

The head coach at the time, Sergio Scariolo, publicly declared that the Danish point guard was not going to be in his plans, leading to lots of speculation. But, ultimately, it was Scariolo whose future at Virtus was cut short, while Lundberg remained.

And boy, Virtus fans must be happy about that. Not only does new head coach Luca Banchi have Virtus playing a far more attractive, team-oriented style of basketball, but Lundberg has become a key piece in the puzzle. Against FC Barcelona in Round 12 of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, the 29-year-old scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as [Virtus secured a crucial 80-75 win](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-virtus-bologna-vs-barca-basket/).

Toko Shengelia has already demonstrated this season that he is back to his best, earning EuroLeague MVP of the Month honors in October for his performances in the early weeks of the season, and he was again key in moments against Barca. But, with Shengelia netting just 3 of his 14 points in the final period, Virtus needed a hero. Up stepped Lundberg.

### Lundberg played at an MVP level

The Virtus guard got the fourth quarter rolling with a mid-range jumper to cut it to a 3-point ballgame, 58-61, and cause the noise level inside Virtus Segafredo Arena to go up a couple of notches. Then, Lundberg dished an assist as Shengelia struck from deep to tie things up at 61-61.

Willy Hernangomez nudged Barca back ahead with a couple of free throws, 61-63, but Lundberg drained another mid-range jumper to pull Virtus level again, 63-63. From there, he grabbed an offensive rebound off a Shengelia missed three and dished the ball under the basket to Bruno Mascolo, who gave Virtus its first lead since the first quarter, 65-63. Oh, but he didn’t stop there.

Lundberg hit a three-pointer over the outstretched arm of Nico Laprovittola to extend Virtus’s advantage to 5 points, 68-63. After Barca had managed to get itself back on track, 72-72, he made Jan Vesely look like he was skating on ice before scoring a layup, 74-72. And with what proved to be his most memorable play of the night, Lundberg sized up Vesely once again, but this time hit a stepback triple to put the dagger into Barca, 79-75, with 17.2 seconds remaining. He also went 1-of-2 from the line with 7.2 seconds to go to take his tally to 21 points and put the cherry on top of a very impressive performance.

### Lundberg is a hero for Virtus fans

After the game, Lundberg was delayed getting to where he needed to be for the post-game flash interview as he was being mobbed by the Virtus supporters, who chanted “MVP” everywhere he went. Everybody wanted a piece of Iffe, and who can blame them?

“I just try to help my team win,” Lundberg humbly commented afterward. “We needed this one really bad coming off the week we had prior to this one. Especially trying to protect home court, so that’s what it was all about tonight.”

After all, this isn’t the first time this season that the Dane has become Virtus’s hero. Back in Round 8, Lundberg scored 17 fourth-quarter points – taking his game tally to 19 – as Virtus defeated Italian rival EA7 Emporio Armani Milan 86-79. In Round 12, though, he had to perform his magic as part of a comeback effort.

Coach Banchi clearly knows the talent that Lundberg has, and he was keen to heap praise on his point guard during the post-game press conference:

“We had some positive energy from everybody, especially a player like Lundberg, who took the big responsibility of completing the job that the first unit had already started at the beginning of the third quarter. It is important to win a game like that, because it is something that we really need \[in order\] to show that this is the way we want to play and compete in such a tough league, like the EuroLeague.”

So, a few months on from Scariolo saying that he wanted Lundberg to leave Virtus, it seems that Iffe and Coach Banchi have ended up having the last laugh.

In his 12th EuroLeague season, one of the all-time great passers, Milos Teodosic of Crvena Zvezda Red Star, is moving up the assists charts in the competition.

Teodosic needed to get 5 assists in his team's Round 12 game against Valencia Basket to go past Thomas Heurtel in the list. He finished with a game-high 9 despite his team's [85-81](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/valencia-basket-crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/E2023/107/) defeat. He had his fifth assist with 5:15 left in the third quarter on a no-look pass to Dejan Davidovac for an alley-oop layup.

Nick Calathes of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul ranks first overall with 1,930 assists. Sergio Rodriguez ranks second (1,781), Vassilis Spanoulis third (1,607), Kostas Sloukas fourth (1,566) and Sergio Llull fifth (1,348) Teodosic is the only player in the those top six with fewer than 300 EuroLeague games played. Wednesday was his 275th game.

Teodosic started his EuroLeague career with Olympiacos Piraeus, where he was chosen as the 2009-10 EuroLeague MVP. He dished 248 assists in 80 games with the Reds. Teodosic went on to play for CSKA Moscow, to which he helped win the EuroLeague title in the 2015-16 season. "Teo" had 878 assists in 157 games with CSKA. Teodosic lifted the 2021-22 BKT EuroCup trophy with Virtus Segafredo Bologna, allowing him to return to the EuroLeague. He had 155 assists in 26 games with Virtus. And after Tuesday, he has dished 64 in 11 games with Zvezda.

Teodosic's assists record are 14 playing CSKA against Unicaja Malaga on January 22, 2015. He ranks second in points-assists double-double, 18, trailing only Calathes (38). He has played in eight Final Fours, and has been chosen to the All-EuroLeague First Team in the 2009-10, 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. He also made it to the 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2016-17 All-EuroLeague Second Team.

Valencia find themselves listed as the the lowest scorers in the competition with just 73.9 ppg, while also laboured with the worst two-point conversion rate. They welcome a Zvezda outfit boosted by an excellent success over Efes, when Yago Dos Santos underlined his growing status in a season high display.

Valencia appeared to have the win in its grasp when it took an 81-74 lead in the closing stages, but a 7-0 run by Zvezda threw it wide open. Jared Harper then kept Valencia in the driving seat with a layup before Davies held his nerve from the foul line.

“The first half was ours as we played good defense and shared the ball, but in the second half Zvezda created a lot of problems for us,” Valencia head coach Alex Mumbru told the post-game press conference.

“We should have killed off the game earlier but we managed to come out on top in the face of adversity. The La Fonteta crowd gave us a lift and we were finally able to celebrate a EuroLeague win after 5 defeats," he added.

Counterpart Ioannis Sfairopoulos conceded that a poor first half cost Zvezda dearly.

“It was a close game in the end and it was decided by a few details,” he said. “The first half belonged to Valencia but we came back in the second. We had our chances in the end but we missed some open shots.

“Our approach was completely different in the third quarter but my concern is why we didn’t have it throughout the 40 minutes. It’s something we have to discuss in order to be more consistent.”
