Fenerbahçe Basketball, Real Madrid meet in modern EuroLeague classic

When discussing the recent history of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul (5-5) and Real Madrid (10-0) immediately come to mind. On Thursday evening at 18:45 CET, [the 2016-17 EuroLeague champion hosts the 11-time winner and reigning titleholder](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/maccabi-playtika-tel-aviv-real-madrid/E2023/48/) at Ulker Sports and Event Hall in Round 11 of the 2023-24 regular season.

#### A growing rivalry

Over the last few years, there is no denying that Real and Fenerbahce have been two of the EuroLeague’s most dangerous teams, with the first page of this rivalry coming the 2015 EuroLeague Semifinals. On that occasion, the Turkish side reached the Final Four for the first time in its history, but the Spanish giant went on to end its 20-year wait to lift the EuroLeague title. One year later, Fenerbahce swept Los Blancos in the 2016 EuroLeague Playoffs, before also beating Real in the 2017 semifinals.

Both sides took their rivalry to another level in 2018, when Real and Fenerbahce faced each other in the 2018 championship game. [Real edged Fenerbahce 85-80](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2017-18/real-madrid-fenerbahce-dogus-istanbul/E2017/260/) in Belgrade, Serbia, behind 17 points from [Fabien Causeur](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/fabien-causeur/001392/) and 15 from 2018 Final Four MVP Luka Doncic. Real also downed Fenerbahce in the 2019 third-place game, 75-94. [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) dished 15 assists that night to set a new Final Four record.

### Big towers collide

The good news for Fenerbahce is that head coach Dimitris Itoudis has most of his players available for the first time in a while, as forward [Metecan Birsen](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/metecan-birsen/003091/) is the only guaranteed absentee. [Dyshawn Pierre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dyshawn-pierre/010560/) and [Tarik Biberovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tarik-biberovic/006961/), who have both missed time lately, have rejoined their team's practices and may see playing time against Real.      

Thursday night’s game gives us the chance to see two of the tallest players in the competition, Fenerbahce's [Georgios Papagiannis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/georgios-papagiannis/005844/) and Real's [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/), go up against each other. Papagiannis and Tavares are very different players, which adds more interest to his matchup. Papagiannis has shown this season that can pull the trigger from downtown with great effectiveness, hitting 10-of-15 three-pointers (66.7%). He is also a good pick-and-roll player and an elite shot blocker who, just like Tavares, has led the league in this category in the past.

Tavares, meanwhile, is a three-time All-EuroLeague First Team selection and three-time EuroLeague Best Defender. His ability to block shots is legendary and Papagiannis and [Sertac Sanli](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sertac-sanli/002968/)’s ability to bring him and [Vincent Poirier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vincent-poirier/004887/) out of the paint could be the biggest key to this game. Fortunately for Coach Itoudis, Sanli has plenty of experience playing against Tavares due to his two seasons with FC Barcelona.

Last season, Tavares solved his potential mismatch against Papagiannis really well, leading Real to home and away victories against Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens while averaging 10.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and a PIR of 18.5. Papagiannis was limited to 7.0 points on 4-of-15 two-point shooting, 5.5 rebounds, no blocks and a PIR of 8.0.

### Campazzo keeps finding everyone

Real is on track to beat the EuroLeague’s assists record. After all, the Spanish side is averaging 23.6 assists per game, far more than any other team in EuroLeague history. Los Blancos hold the previous record, too, set at 21.5 in the 2014-15 campaign. As for total numbers, Olympiacos Piraeus dished 862 assists last season, which is more than any team ever.

Playmaker Facu Campazzo is at the center of it all. Right in the prime of his career, Campazzo has dished at least 5 assists in each and every EuroLeague game this season. He is averaging 8.4 dimes in 10 games, something that only all-time assists leader and current Fenerbahce playmaker [Nick Calathes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nick-calathes/001932/) managed to better, doing so in the 2018-19 (8.7 apg.) and the 2019-20 campaigns (9.1 apg.). Calathes holds the single-season record at 286 assists, and Campazzo may go past that come the end of the season.

In Round 9 against ALBA Berlin, Campazzo and [Sergio Rodriguez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sergio-rodriguez/cvm/) became the first teammates to get 10 assists or more in the same game. Los Blancos also set this season's best assists mark as a team, 32, in that game.

### Keys to the game

So, how do you stop a team that is undefeated and seemingly getting better with each game? Well, Fenerbahce has to do a number of things right and, of course, rely on its outstanding crowd to offer a helping hand.

Real leads the 2023-24 EuroLeague in several categories, one of which is defensive rebounds (27.3 drpg.). Fenerbahce needs to therefore power the offensive glass and has the right players to do so in [Johnathan Motley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/johnathan-motley/011157/), Papagiannis and [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/).

Fenerbahce takes more three-point shots at home (30.8 per game) than any other team in the competition, so relying on its best shooters like [Scottie Wilbekin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/scottie-wilbekin/006661/), [Tyler Dorsey](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tyler-dorsey/009849/) and Hayes-Davis will be crucial. However, Real takes far more three-point shots on the road (31.8) than in the Spanish capital (26.2), which Coach Itoudis should also take into account when preparing Fenerbahce’s game plan. Luckily for the Greek tactician, Calathes and [Yam Madar](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/yam-madar/011052/) are good on-ball defenders and can apply pressure on Campazzo and Rodriguez.

An injury suffered in a domestic game adds more change to the Zalgiris Kaunas roster.

Zalgiris loses Manek to knee injury

Zalgiris Kaunas forward [Brady Manek](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/brady-manek/012715/) will be off of Turkish Airlines EuroLeague courts at least a month due to a knee injury, the club confirmed on Thursday, hours before its road game against EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. Manek injured his right knee when an opposing player fell against him in a Lithuanian League game on Monday. The American power forward, who made his EuroLeague debut this season, left the game and did not return. Further tests since revealed that Manek will need a month to recover.

Brought on as the team's main off-season frontcourt addition, Manek was known for his deep range as a shooter, something that balanced well with more inside-oriented forwards Rolands Smits and Edgaras Ulanovas. Manek showed flashes of his potential, especially while hitting 5 of 5 three-pointers in a resounding 82-99 road win at Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 4.

Overall, in 10 games off the Zalgiris bench, Manek was averaging 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and a PIR of 6.6 in 18 minutes per game. He was shooting a solid 46.2% from downtown, making 18 of 39 attempts from the arc

### Roster ripples for Zalgiris

Manek's injury comes after Zalgiris [let guard Naz Mitrou-Long leave for Olympiacos Piraeus](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/olympiacos-signs-guard-mitrou-long), just as swingman Ignas Brazdeikis had done late in the preseason. Earlier this week, Zalgiris added Edmond Sumner to the backcourt, but he has yet to arrive in Lithuania and will not be part of the expedition to Milan. To fill out the roster for Round 11, Zalgiris is bringing up youngsters Dovydas Butka and Nedas Montvila for the trip.

[Jabari Parker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jabari-parker/012745/) is a player who is known right across the world, but the FC Barcelona forward has found himself right at home in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. A former No. 2 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the 28-year-old has already wowed fans in Europe’s premier club basketball competition with his performances on the court.

Some ex-NBA players who come to Europe arrive with the wrong attitude, but not Parker. His global outlook on the game of basketball meant that he was always going to be open to options abroad, and he’s hit the ground running since landing at Barcelona.

“Basketball is bigger than the NBA. Basketball is global,” says Parker in an exclusive feature with the EuroLeague. 

“Ever since I was young, when I was watching the Olympics and seeing other teams like Spain and Argentina, I knew that no matter what part or stage of my career, I wanted to play at the best level, no matter where I was.”

Jabari Parker is a player who is known right across the world, but the FC Barcelona forward has found himself right at home in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. During a feature interview, the 28-year-old raves about his first season playing in the EuroLeague, as well as discussing his global outlook on basketball and also the difference between the NBA and the EuroLeague.

### His ‘love’ for the EuroLeague

Parker may be just 10 games into his EuroLeague career, but he has not looked out of place one bit. There were a lot of expectations on his shoulders upon his arrival at Palau Blaugrana, yet he’s so far taken everything in his stride. 

“I love the EuroLeague,” states the Barcelona forward. “It’s very competitive, it’s guys who play basketball the right way and the environment \[atmosphere\], most importantly, stands out.

“I just want to do what I do best, but most importantly it’s all about winning. When we win, it takes care of all our problems and as long as I am a byproduct of our team’s success, then I’m happy.”

### EuroLeague vs. NBA

The age-old comparison between the EuroLeague and the NBA is one that has been heard many a time, but for Parker, he is delighted with how things are going so far.

“I say the NBA and the EuroLeague is like night and day,” he notes. “It kind of reminds me of college playing here in Europe: every game is counted for. 

“It can either build you or break you and it matters when you play in certain tournaments and for bragging rights. We not only have a rival in \[Real\] Madrid, but we have rivals everywhere we go and that’s how serious it is.”

Parker is only in his first year in the competition, but having averaged 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds and helped Barca race out to an 8-2 record, he very much seems to have found his basketball home.

The rookie forward has loved his experience in the competition so far.

Maccabi, who played as hosts in Belgrade's Aleksandar Nikolic Hall, dropped to 5-5 after losing the first quarter 21-36, having allowed the biggest score ever in a single quarter of a EuroLeague game.

Maccabi (5-5) will play its second home game of the week in Belgrade with a visit from rock-bottom ALBA (1-9), which is still waiting for its first road win of the season. Although ALBA will be aware of [Lorenzo Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/lorenzo-brown/009622/)'s role as Maccabi's main playmaker, the German team will also need to focus on its former player [Tamir Blatt](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tamir-blatt/011193/), who ranks fifth in the league for assists with 5.4 per game. Although it has struggled in nearly every statistical category, ALBA does lead the league in steals, with [Gabriele Procida](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/gabriele-procida/008384/) ranked third overall with 1.8 per night. And those ball-hawking abilities will be very important to disrupt the rhythm of a fast-paced Maccabi offense, led by Brown and Blatt, which averages 20.4 assists per game, second-best in the competition. Maccabi, which suffered a humiliating 70-99 loss against Real on its home floor, will be looking to bounce back as quick as possible.

Both clubs may be considered outsiders in making the playoffs, yet Bayern's historic win over Efes and Virtus' impressive victory over Panathinaikos may be the respective catalysts for an upward trajectory. Who can grab the initiative and help instigate some momentum?

Bayern boss Pablo Laso will center his gameplan around trying to stop [Tornike Shengelia](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tornike-shengelia/001133/), the top-ranked player in the competition with an average PIR of 22.6. Another threat from the Italian team is the shooting of [Marco Belinelli](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/marco-belinelli/bcn/), who averages 13.1 points per game on 44.6% three-point shooting. In a meeting between two of the four teams currently tied for 12th place, rapidly improving Milan (4-6) will look for another win with a visit from Zalgiris (4-6), which has lost five of the last six, including three straight on the road. After powering the Italian team's Round 9 victory over Zvezda with a career night of 32 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting, [Maodo Lo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/maodo-lo/007032/) will look to continue to provide leadership to a Milan backcourt that has underdelivered at times this season. He will be countered by [Keenan Evans](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/keenan-evans/011218/), who has remained consistent during an up-and-down season for Zalgiris by averaging 15.0 points on 45.5% three-point shooting, including multiple triples in four of the last five games.

Zvezda desperately needs to improve its perimeter defense after taking in 93 points against Milan, including 17 three-pointers with a 63% conversion rate. That's especially important against one of the best long-range shooters out there, [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/), who has drained 10 triples in his last three games. [Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) is also recovering his best form with at least 16 points in the last four games, and Zvezda will hope that [Nemanja Nedovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nemanja-nedovic/000848/) can continue his upturn in productivity after reaching double-digits in the last four straight.

Valencia (5-5) will look to end a four–game losing slump with a Spanish derby against Baskonia (5-5), which is also eager to return to winning ways after last week's late loss to Monaco. Baskonia boasts the second-best road record in the league (3-1), while Valencia is just as strong at La Fonteta with four wins and just one defeat. This game has plenty of significance as it will break a tie between two teams on the fringes of the playoffs places.
