The American guard scored 27 points, going 4-of-6 on both two-pointers and three-pointers, as well as a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line. Larkin also dished 8 assists and had 3 steals and 3 rebounds. On the other hand, Lo paced Milan to a 71-93 road win over Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. He scored a career-high 32 points, netting 4-of-7 two-pointers and tying his career-best mark by making 6 triples on 7 attempts. Two of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s elite scorers went [head to head at Buesa Arena](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-saski-baskonia-vs-as-monaco-basket/) on Friday night, yet it was AS Monaco’s Mike James who ended up comfortably winning his personal battle with Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz's Markus Howard.

There was a surprise before tipoff when Howard was left out of Baskonia’s starting five for the first time this season, and he didn’t enter the action until the end of the first quarter. If the plan was to keep him fresh to do damage once the game started to open up, that backfired badly because Howard instead picked up 2 fouls almost immediately and then a third a few minutes later, before he had even scored.

Dusko Ivanovic bravely kept Howard in the game on those 3 fouls, and he did manage to score a triple but was understandably subdued, perhaps playing within himself in the fear of collecting a fourth foul before halftime.

### Mike James haunted his former team

James, meanwhile, was being Mike James. He steadily piled up the points to score 9 in the first half and then, at the start of the second, predictably became the game’s first player in double digits. And that was just the beginning.

Angered by a couple of non-foul calls, James used that as fuel for a flurry of baskets as he netted 3 three-pointers, 3 free throws and a layup (14 points in total) in less than 5 minutes.

Early in the fourth quarter James added another triple, his fifth of the night, to cap a 0-9 run and seemingly sewed up the game, with Monaco enjoying an 11-point lead, 62-73.

### Markus Howard gave Baskonia hope

It wasn’t quite game over, though. Howard had bridged the third and fourth quarters with 7 points in a minute before finally picking up that fourth foul and heading to the bench.

But with Baskonia fighting back, he returned to the action during crunch time and appeared to have sent the game to overtime by draining a stunning triple with 6 seconds left.

### James, Monaco came out on top

But James would have the final word, seeking another triple to win the game. He missed, but Jaron Blossomgame flew highest and hardest for the rebound to unleash a spectacular game-winning putback slam, sealing the win for Monaco. Even when James didn’t score, he still scored.

In the end, 28 points for James, 18 for Howard and 9 three-pointers between them. The shooters’ shootout did not disappoint, and James ended up victorious.

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan used a strong finish to the game and an incredible team shooting performance [to beat Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade 71-93](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-kk-crvena-zvezda-vs-olimpia-milano/) on Friday night at Stark Arena.

The Italian visitors came to the Serbian capital without a win on the road this season, but they got their first win away from home in impressive fashion. Importantly, Milan had a clear plan of wanting to keep the tempo of the game slow, in part to keep down the hosts' energy and the noise inside the arena.

### Milan had control, but had to fight again

That approached helped Milan lead for the majority of the first half, but then the visitors found themselves 47-41 down early in the third.

That's when Milan stepped up defensively, while simultaneously catching fire on offense. 

"\[At the\] beginning of the third quarter, when we were down 6, we answered with four, five \[defensive\] stops in a row", commented Milan head coach Ettore Messina afterward. "But we also moved the ball well offensively. You need your players to make big plays and make shots to win."

And make shots they did.

Milan finished the game 17-for-27 (63.0%) from long range, just one triple shy of a club record. Even more remarkably, Milan was 11-for-13 on three-pointers in the second half. At one point, Milan made 10 of its 11 three-point attempts after the halftime break.

"It is a big-time win for us in an incredible atmosphere", said the hero of the game, Maodo Lo.

### A memorable night for Maodo Lo

No player shot it better than Lo on Friday night, as he played the best game of his EuroLeague career. Lo knocked down 6-of-7 triples, tying his career-best en route to scoring a career-high 32 points.

"I am very happy for Maodo Lo, for his game", Milan team captain Nicolo Melli said of his teammate. "He just got here, he is a new point guard, you know… it is important for us, but mostly for him to have such performances because he is a great player."

Lo was Milan's leading force in the first half, scoring 15 points as Milan trailed 39-38 at halftime. He scored the rest of his points in the second half, but was also helped by Shavon Shields, who netted 16 of his 19 points in the final two quarters.

Shields was 4-of-5 from three-point land, including 3-for-3 in the final 6 minutes of the night. Just as Zvezda closed within 65-69, Shields hit his second triple, then had two more during a 4-24 spurt that blew the game wide open.

Coach Messina credits his performance to the players' hard work and their growing comfort together.

"We had a good couple of weeks of work and I am very happy for my players, because you can see they are enjoying the challenge," noted Messina. "They are playing together with more enthusiasm and confidence. They are showing their abilities and their talent."

Milan's second win in a row improved it to 4-6, and next up is a home game against Zalgiris Kaunas before going on a three-game road trip, making this road victory even more significant.

Efes very literally stole its thrilling win over Partizan

When a team reaches the century mark in points for the first time in more than 18 months, it may seem incongruous to point to its defense as the key to victory, but that's exactly the case in [Anadolu Efes Istanbul's thrilling 100-94 home win over Partizan Mozzartbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/anadolu-efes-istanbul-partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/E2023/87/#boxscore) on Friday.

Efes was behind 64-74 entering the fourth quarter and had made 8 steals in the game's first 30 minutes. In the final 7 minutes, Efes doubled that total, which helped unleash a flood of easy points that would turn the game around.

Its 8 fourth-quarter steals were as many as any Turkish Airlines EuroLeague has made in any single quarter since Efes itself had 9 in the first quarter against Strasbourg of France almost exactly 10 years ago, on November 29, 2013. And Efes's game-ending total of 16 steals was also the best by 3 of any EuroLeague team this season. 

Forcing turnovers on Partizan was very much what Efes had in mind coming into the game. The visitors were missing injured point guard Aleksa Avramovic, and Efes started early in the game double-teaming whatever Partizan player brought the ball across halfcourt, collecting 7 first-half steals.

"It was part of the game plan that we needed to be very aggressive on their guards," head coach Erdem Can explained after the game. "We knew that because of the injuries and stuff, they don't have many players in their guard lineup. This is why they used Zach LeDay and even Alen Smailagic sometimes at \[small forward\], and we expected that to be one of their strategies. Our guards were aggressive, but the times they weren't \[Partizan\] got the advantage."

After the break, however, Partizan adjusted, the turnovers dried up, and the visitors outscored Efes 14-29 to turn a five-point deficit into a 10-point lead. 

For Efes, its scoring prowess did indeed set up the game-turning defense. Efes outscored Partizan 12-4 to start the fourth quarter by drawing within 76-78. Will Clyburn got his team's first fourth-quarter steal with 7 minutes left, and then the floodgates opened. Over the last 5 minutes, 11 seconds – at the start of which ties and lead changes continued – five different Efes players joined to make seven more steals, with S[hane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/) making 2 beauties and [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rodrigue-beaubois/006590/) 2 more in the final minute.

Larkin, Clyburn and [Ante Zizic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ante-zizic/004554/) all led the collective effort with 3 steals each, helping to force a season-high 20 giveaways on Partizan.

Without that defensive aggressiveness, Efes would never have reached 100 points and might not have come away with a thrilling win that broke its tie in the standings with Partizan. Efes is now 5-5 and tied with three other teams for eighth place.

"We've been preaching it all week. We knew that the key to this game was to be aggressive on both sides of the ball," Larkin said. "hat's a very good team over there with a whole lot of talent. We had to be defensively aggressive."

The 32-year-old guard galvanized his team to its third successive win with a career-high 25 points, shooting the lights out with a barrage of three-pointers in the second half. At one stage, he even gestured that he had ice in his veins as the visitors were forced into early submission.

### Walkup, not Canaan, led the way at first

Canaan did not look like emerging as the game’s top performer early on, as Zalgiris made it a physical and low-scoring contest in the first quarter when the teams were tied 19-19. Then, in the second quarter, it was Thomas Walkup who got the hosts going and sparked a 14-0 run with several shots from downtown, propelling Olympiacos into a 43-31 halftime lead.

Alec Peters, the team’s top performer this season, kept doing his thing throughout but it was Canaan who impressed the most after the break as he brought the energy which kept Olympiacos firmly in the driving seat, amid a sustained yet futile Zalgiris effort to turn the game around.

“Peters and I just tried to stay locked in as much as possible,” a delighted Canaan said in a flash interview as he walked off the court.

“Our teammates did a great job finding us. We work hard every day on finding our spots and trying to make the shots.”

### Canaan, Walkup and Peters were key for Olympiacos

Canaan, who shot 8-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the foul line, acknowledged it was important to have players who’ve recovered from injuries back available again. “It’s good to start getting everybody back, we’ve been trying to weather this storm all season and every week is a step ahead,” he stressed.

Peters was the usual silent water that runs deep, netting from the perimeter as well as from inside to rack up 22 points, while Walkup added 14 as Olympiacos shot an impressive 15-of-29 from downtown.

Asked what inspired him and Canaan to such lethal long-range shooting on the night, Peters revealed that the two squared off in practice in the build-up to the game.

“Isaiah and I competed with each other in three-point shooting before the game, that’s what keeps us going and keeps the juice flowing,” said Peters. “We’re feeling great right now. Zalgiris is a really physical team and you have to win that battle if you want to win the game, so we came out in the second half determined to protect our lead.”

The home team’s head coach Georgios Bartzokas made it clear he had rooted out any possibility of complacency during the halftime team talk.

“We were alert and we spoke in the locker room about Zalgiris being a team that never gives up,” he said. “They play in the same tempo and have shooters in every position. We now need to show stability and consistency.”

Olympiacos will face a stern test of its credentials and the ability to make it four wins in a row when it visits an in-form AS Monaco in Round 11, whereas Zalgiris has the challenging task of bouncing back at EA7 Emporio Armani Milan.
