### Valencia hands Real first loss

Real Madrid has been unstoppable until now, winning all of its EuroLeague and Spanish League games. There are reasons to believe Los Blancos could lose in Round 8. First, Valencia Basket has had a strong start to the season, too, winning 12 of 16 official games until now with a 7-1 record at La Fonteta. Valencia can expect a great partisan crowd, [Brandon Davies](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/brandon-davies/007870/) is one of the players that gave [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) trouble in the past, and [Stefan Jovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/stefan-jovic/004863/) is an excellent defensive choice to use against red-hot [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/). Valencia is a defensive-minded, physical team that can matchup really well against the reigning champions. Playing at home, head coach Alex Mumbru, himself a former Real Madrid player, can lead his squad to an important victory.

### Hayes-Davis will play 80 minutes in two games

Last week Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul forward [Nigel Hayes-Davis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/nigel-hayes-davis/008962/) played 39 minutes and 58 seconds in a road loss against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. He only stepped out of the game for the final 2 seconds of the third quarter. A week earlier, he played the entire 40 minutes at home against Olympiacos Piraeus. This week, Fenerbahce is back in the Serbian capital for two games, first at Stark Arena against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade on Tuesday, then at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall against Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv on Thursday. Head coach Dimitris Itoudis will still not have [Dyshawn Pierre](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dyshawn-pierre/010560/) or [Metecan Birsen](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/metecan-birsen/003091/) available, and [Marko Guduric](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/marko-guduric/004004/) is also questionable, which means Hayes-Davis is up for more heavy usage. He already leads the league in average minutes played this season (32:59), and I see him not getting one second of rest this double-round week as Fenerbahce faces a pair of tough tests away from home.

Check the standings and you will see Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade in ninth place with a 3-4 record. This week that will change as head coach Zeljko Obradovic's men will storm into the top six with a road win at FC Bayern Munich and a home victory over ALBA Berlin. Bayern has lost four EuroLeague games in a row. It's the perfect time for a hungry Partizan side, in good spirits after outlasting Fenerbahce last week, to snag its first road win since Round 2. And then, on Friday, Partizan returns home to take on ALBA Berlin. Expect to start seeing Partizan's newest signing, [Bruno Caboclo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/bruno-caboclo/012096/), making contributions this week, too. Remember, he was kryptonite against both Bayern and ALBA in last season's German League playoffs as he led Ulm to that title.

### ASVEL will go perfect in the double-round week

Ever since Gianmarco Pozzecco landed at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne ahead of Round 5, the French side has shown a grit and determination that simply wasn't there in the first four rounds of the season. ASVEL is 1-2 so far in the Pozzecco era, having lost 84-87 to Virtus Segafredo Bologna and 80-70 to AS Monaco in Rounds 5 and 7, respectively, but it won 88-91 on the road at Zalgiris Kaunas in Round 6. Even in the Monaco defeat last Friday night, ASVEL's heaviest so far under Pozzecco, it was only a nightmarish three-minute spell on offense in the closing stages that allowed the principality side to pull away. In this double-round week, I expect ASVEL to not only get back on track but to win both of its games, as it travels to struggling ALBA Berlin in Round 8 on Wednesday before hosting Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 9 on Friday. Pozzecco has changed the mindset of this team and I believe his group of warriors will improve the team's record to 3-6 heading into next weekend.

### Efes will get its first road win

It's a tall order, visiting Monaco and Milan within 48 hours on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively, but things seem to be coming together for Anadolu Efes Istanbul, and I think that process will pay off with a road victory this week. Yes, Efes lost its three previous away games by an average of 15.7 points. Yes they are challenged on defense, allowing a league-worst 2.0-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio to opponents. Nonetheless, with [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) looking hungry again, [Derek Willis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/derek-willis/009664/) coming off his first double-double, and [Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) ramping up his playmaking abilities, Efes is regaining the kind of balance that wins. [Shane Larkin](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/shane-larkin/007200/), [Rodrigue Beaubois](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/rodrigue-beaubois/006590/) and [Ante Zizic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/ante-zizic/004554/) are givens while [Tyrique Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/tyrique-jones/011981/) is quickly learning the ropes. Depth is an issue for Efes, especially with [Elijah Bryant](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elijah-bryant/009846/) still out, but willingness is not. Getting back in the race with a road win is motivation enough for the former champions on this roster to lead their new teammates to an upset in the principality or the fashion capital this week.

Euroleague Basketball's award-winning podcast, The Crossover with Joe Arlauckas, returns for its sixth season and gets things going with one of the most interesting players in the competition. Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul forward Nigel Hayes-Davis is now in his fifth season in the EuroLeague on his third different team. He has been an impact player at every stop, helping his teams pile up wins while playing for some of the best and most demanding coaches in Europe.

All the while, Hayes-Davis has become a seasoned traveler, absorbed multiple languages and left his mark on the communities where he plays and where he grew up. To understand Hayes-Davis best, one needs to hear about his relationships with his mother, Talaya Davis, and his stepfather, Abert Davis. In fact, Hayes-Davis even selected the clip that best demonstrates the family dynamic.

15:00 "I want this one to be the clip everyone uses. So I talk about my stepfather all the time. You're right," he explained. "And everyone's like, 'Oh, what about your mom?' But everyone knows that I love my mother dearly. Of course, I love my mother so much that like, in order to save my life, let's say we're walking down the street and I had to push my stepfather in front of a truck to save my mother. I wouldn't even think about pushing him. But the reason why he's so amazing is he would go before I could push him because he wouldn't want me to feel bad about it and he would care that much about my mother and myself. So, like, that's the relationship. Like, I pushed him in front of a truck for my mom, but he would jump before I could push him."

Abert Davis continually set an example for his stepson through hard work and dedication to the family, even splurging on expensive basketball shoes to support Nigel in high school. Hayes-Davis went on to become a star in college at the University of Wisconsin, where while becoming an advocate for athlete's rights, he also reached two NCAA Final Fours and one championship game.

The next step was the NBA, where he suited up for three different clubs during the 2017-18 season, but never caught on anywhere.

36:25 "The beauty of that is, you know, I can technically say you achieved a dream playing in a \[n NBA\] game, playing in some games and then you know coming to Europe and like really learning how to like, learning more about just how to how to play basketball," Hayes-Davis said. "Like it's two different worlds. Honestly. The NBA and EuroLeague are two completely different brands of basketball. They're really not even comparable."

After making his European debut with Galatasaray Istanbul in the EuroCup, Hayes-Davis caught the eye of Zalgiris Kaunas, which signed him the following season. The forward credits his time under Coach Sarunas Jasikevicius, who he played for at both Zalgiris and FC Barcelona, for helping him take a step forward as a player.

"What I appreciate the most is that he, and I told him too, even though like he wasn't a great defender, he helped me be a great one."

Hayes-Davis's role and, accordingly, his production have grown since he joined Fenerbahce under Coach Dimitris Itoudis in the summer of 2022. Their first season together came to an end after a thrilling playoff series against Olympiacos Piraeus, which the Reds won in five games only after edging Fenerbahce in Game 3 in Istanbul on Kostas Sloukas's buzzer-beating triple over the outstretched arm of Hayes-Davis.

51:17 "They were a great team and honestly, like what anybody says, to be a championship team, and as great as they were, they earned the level of luck they got on that game when he shot from Sloukas because honestly, we outplayed them that game," Davis-Hayes lamented. "That would have been three wins in a row. We lost the first one and we outplayed them for three games in a row. And we should have won, should have won the series 3-1."

Fenerbahce and Hayes-Davis are off to a strong start this season as they hope to put that loss in the rear-view mirror and power on to challenge for the crown in 2024.

First, he has posted career-best numbers in assists in both the EuroLeague and Greek League in the last week. Second, Nikola Milutinov is sidelined in this double-round week, so Fall will see extended playing time.

EuroLeague Fantasy tips: Rounds 8-9

[Darius Thompson, Anadolu Efes Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) (12.3 credits) – Thompson has adjusted to a new situation and started to share the ball the way he did with Baskonia last season. He had 9 assists in the Turkish League this weekend and dished 5 against Zalgiris in EuroLeague action. It is a good time to buy him before his price goes up.

[Jordan Loyd, AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jordan-loyd/009754/) (13.4 credits) – Loyd started the game season in the injured list but has quickly regained his rhythm. He had a good game against ASVEL last week, amassing a PIR of 14, and did even better in the French League, getting 29 points and a PIR of 32 in just 24 minutes. Loyd should only get better and better.

[Jabari Parker, FC Barcelona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jabari-parker/012745/) (12.8 credits) – Parker has been extremely solid in the last couple of weeks. In Round 7 against Zvezda, Parker needed just 22 minutes to get 20 points and a PIR of 19. He also played well in the Spanish League: 18 points and a PIR of 20 in less than 24 minutes. He is improving as the season goes on.

Fantasy tips: Big bargains for two rounds

Another frontcourt injury challenges Virtus Bologna as Jordan Mickey is sidelined at least two weeks.

Virtus's Jordan Mickey out mid-term with ankle injury

Virtus on Monday announced that big man [Jordan Mickey](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/jordan-mickey/008847/) will be out mid-term with an ankle injury. Mickey sprained his right ankle in a domestic game on Saturday. The club said he will be reevaluated in two or three weeks, meaning that a key piece of the Virtus frontcourt will not only miss the double-round week that starts Tuesday with the [Italian Derby](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2023-24/virtus-segafredo-bologna-ea7-emporio-armani-milan/E2023/68/), but at least one more Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game beyond that. Mickey has been leading Virtus in total rebounds, with 5.3 per game, and in blocks, with 1.0 on average. He was also scoring 11.4 points per game, third-best on the team. He has been an experienced force off the bench through seven games behind veteran Bryant Dunston as Virtus staked a claim near the top of the standings with a 5-2 record.

Another frontcourt injury challenges Virtus Segafredo Bologna as Jordan Mickey is sidelined at least two weeks.

After coming close to upsetting Barcelona on the road last week, Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade (2-5) comes home looking to overcome a Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul team (5-2) that also seeks a return to winning ways after losing a thriller against Partizan in Round 7.
