In the [Turkish Airlines EuroLeague's fifth installment of *Le Classique*](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/euroleague-live-blog-as-monaco-basket-vs-ldlc-asvel/), the French League derby between AS Monaco and LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, it was Sasa Obradovic's squad that ended up securing another win. The final 80-70 scoreline is the only double-digit lead that Monaco had, and the teams were tied at 68-68 with just 3:15 to go.

However, Monaco did not allow a single basket in the next 3 minutes, forcing four consecutive missed shots by the visitors to come away with the victory.

### A dominant couple of quarters

While Mike James and Alpha Diallo made clutch shots in those final 3 minutes, and Elie Okobo was an important factor throughout the night, it was Monaco's performance in the second and fourth quarters that allowed it to secure bragging rights in the French derby.

Attention moves to France for a derby that may exhibit stalwarts of the European stage with two of the four players to have reached 4,000 points on show. Can ASVEL's Nando De Colo help build momentum after a maiden success of 23/24 or will Mike James power Monaco to a fourth straight success?

After making just 4-of-18 field goals in the opening 10 minutes, Monaco was 6-of 11 on two-pointers and 4-for-6 on threes in the second quarter, winning that period by a score of 27-14.

Then, in the fourth, Monaco was 3-of-6 on two-pointers but 5-of-11 from behind the arc, all while holding ASVEL to just 9 fourth-quarter points. The hosts turned a 57-61 deficit at the end of the third into an 80-70 victory, its fifth straight, to improve to 5-2 on the season.

He shot 7-of-9 from two-point territory and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, mixing slam dunks and drives to the basket with sublime perimeters shots. Parker’s performance compensated for a tough night endured by Barcelona’s backcourt, as guards Alex Abrines and Nicolas Laprovittola netted a mere 5 points between them.

“We beat a hell of a team. \[It was\] tough because they exploited our weaknesses throughout the game,” Parker said in a flash courtside interview as he walked off the floor. “They are well coached and well operated. ### Barcelona leaned on its inside shooting

Zvezda thoroughly dominated the boards, having amassed a total of 44 rebounds to Barca’s 27, but the home side thrived on close-range shooting as it nailed 26-of-39 shots from two-point territory.

Apart from Hernangomez and Parker, center Jan Vesely was also a key factor as he netted 14 points for Barca, cancelling out a heroic solo effort from Zvezda power forward Luka Mitrovic, who led all scorers with 22 points.

“Small details decided the game,” Zvezda head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos lamented in the post-game press conference. “Hopefully we will improve in order to be able to win these types of games. ### A historic first half

Panathinaikos set the foundations of its road win in the first half, displaying a terrific offensive performance that built a 47-60 difference at the break. The Greens were unstoppable in the first and the second quarters, scoring the most points in a half for any team in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague this season.

Panathinaikos’s 60 points was also the third-best first-half total in club history and its second-highest score in a first half playing as a road team. It was only 4 points behind its record, achieved 16 years ago when Panathinaikos beat Chorale Roanne in France, 83-123. On that occasion, the Greens scored 64 points in the first 20 minutes, going into halftime with a 39-64 lead.

“We started the game very well offensively,” Panathinaikos head coach Ergin Ataman stated in the post-game press conference. “Actually, in the first quarter and during the whole first half, we moved the ball very well. We found open shots and we made them.”

### Some players went 100% before halftime

In the first half, the Greens had an incredible team line, going for 14-of-17 on two-pointers (82% 2FG), 8-of-12 from deep (75% 3FG) and 8-of-9 from the line (89%). That was possible thanks to several players finishing the first two quarters without missing a field goal.

“It was important that we found pick and roll situations with \[Olek\] Balcerowski that we used very well and then with \[Luca\] Vildoza, who made 4 three-pointers, so we got an important points difference in the first half,” added Ataman.

Actually, Balcerowski and Vildoza were two of the players who were perfect from the field in the first half. The former made all of his 4 two-point attempts, while Vildoza did the same from behind the arc. Kostas Sloukas also joined the party by going 2-of-2 from two and 1-of-1 from downtown, and Grigonis also made 3 field goals, including 2 treys, without missing a shot.

At the foot of the standings, ALBA seek recovery from a hard-fought loss at Valencia, in which Sterling Brown continued his strong form alongside Matt Thomas, whereas Panathinaikos are re-equipped with Kostas Sloukas and Luca Vildoza for selection since they missed the trip to Barça.

### ALBA couldn’t turn the game on its head

Even though ALBA tried to come back in the second half by using a zone defense that slowed down Panathinaikos’s offense, the difference that the visitors built in the opening two quarters was too much for the home side to overcome.

“ALBA is a team that never gives up,” recognized Ataman. “\[In the second half\] they started to pressure \[us\], they changed their defense, they started to use zone and we had some problems attacking the zone, but after that we found the way again to find the scoring.

“I think that offensively, it was a great game. We made 13 three-point shots, ALBA also made 12. It’s an important victory for us before the double-game week we will play next week.”

But the forward added only 2 points to his tally in the second half as Fenerbahce started to struggle on offense amid Partizan's aggressive half-court pressure.
