Valencia Basket has made it three wins from three to start the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, as it [powered past Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 75-66](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/live-blog-valencia-basket-vs-maccabi-tel-aviv-bc/) at La Fonteta on Wednesday night. 

The hosts were inspired by solid performances from their experienced players in particular, with Victor Claver and Stefan Jovic recording a PIR of 16 each, Damien Inglis scoring a team-high 11 points and Brandon Davies putting the game to bed in crunch time.

### Jovic was a safe pair of hands

Jovic came off the bench and made an instant impact, scoring a basket in the closing stages of the first quarter to give Valencia a morale-boosting 18-17 lead heading into the second period. He went on to record 7 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals in almost 20 minutes on the floor.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Jovic said afterward. “Third win in a row. We protected our home court, which is the most important thing now. When I step for the first time on the court here, I feel the support from the fans. I feel very comfortable on the court and, of course, when I spoke with the coach, he explained to me what I need to do. This is my job: to play for the team. And I really enjoy it.”

### Claver led the way as team captain

Jovic was not the only veteran to step up when his team needed him the most, as Claver pulled off a player-of-the-game performance, also off the bench. The Valencia team captain scored 10 points, including a huge triple when Maccabi was leading 36-40 in the third quarter. His game-high 7 rebounds helped the hosts dominate the boards 35-27, and his steal in the third quarter allowed him to reach a milestone of 150 steals in his EuroLeague career.

“I think we are doing a great job as a team,” Claver noted after the game. “I think everybody is important in this team. We had to take advantage of the good shape we are in and keep going. I get to know the coach more, to know what he wants from me, and try to do it every day. No matter how many minutes I play, I try to push my teammates and be a leader on the bench and on the court. I think, as you can see, not only me but everyone is involved.”

### Late heroics from Davies

Davies was one of those who delivered, despite a slow start to the game. The 32-year-old center scored 8 of his 10 points in the last 3 minutes of the duel and produced a huge block to reject Lorenzo Brown when Valencia was leading 68-64 with 01:13 left on the clock. Those two factors were crucial in Valencia sealing the victory.

Valencia's veterans pushed the hosts to victory on Wednesday night and they will be called to build on their three-game winning streak ahead of their first away duel of the season, which is away at Anadolu Efes Istanbul on Friday.

Toko Shengelia has been established as one of the best players in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague for a decade, recording a double-digit PIR in each of the last 10 seasons and earning a selection for the 2018 All-EuroLeague First Team.

Over the course of 225 appearances in the competition with Charleroi, Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, CSKA Moscow and now Virtus Segafredo Bologna, the forward has often given opposition defenses an unplayable mix of power, ball handling, passing vision and shooting range – truly a big man who can do everything.

But Shengelia is now 32 years old, and at times in the last couple of years it has looked as though Father Time was starting to catch up with him. 

### Rediscovering the former Shengelia

Last season he missed the first couple of months through injury and then struggled to regain his usual dominance after returning to fitness, being held to single digits scoring in 10 of his 23 appearances and averaging ‘only’ 9.4 points per game – solid enough for most players, but well down on his career average of 11.7. It also represented the first time he hadn’t reached a scoring average in double digits since the 2015-16 season.

After netting 17 and 12 points, respectively, in Virtus’s first two games against Zalgiris and Monaco, Round 3 saw Shengelia back to his unstoppable best. 

He dominated the paint throughout his 27 minutes on the floor, finishing with 26 points on 8-of-9 two-point shooting, also knocking down 1 of his 2 three-point attempts and adding 3 assists plus 4 rebounds to complete a memorable all-round performance. ALBA’s defense just had no answer for his footwork, balance and sheer strength, as Virtus leaned on his abilities to record a comfortable victory.

### Leading the way for a ‘growing’ Virtus

After the game, Shengelia focused on the team ethic, reflecting Virtus’s focus on continually improving: “We learned the hard way in the first game. We were up against Zalgiris but then we lost the game, so that was a good lesson for us. 

“We are trying to form an identity, we’re still in a growing stage, we’re learning from our mistakes and we came out pretty strong. Even though they made a run, we stayed solid.”

And the most solid of all was Shengelia, who looks every inch ready to play a major leadership role for Virtus this season.

James led Monaco with 18 points and most of them came at crunch moments in the second half, when the visitors repelled Zvezda’s efforts to turn the game around after the home side had thrown away a 44-38 halftime lead.

Just as crucially, Zvezda point guards Milos Teodosic and Shabazz Napier were ground to a halt by Monaco’s aggressive defense, which confined the duo to a combined total of 10 points on 2-of-14 shooting from three-point range.

Zvezda relied on towering Lithuanian Rokas Giedraits, who fired on all cylinders in the first quarter when he sank 14 points, but he managed only 6 points in the remaining three periods. Nemanja Nedovic added 15 points for Zvezda and Joel Bolomboy chipped in with 11, but the hosts were undone by 23 team assists dished out by their rivals.

### Kemba Walker’s EuroLeague debut

Alpha Diallo scored 12 points for Monaco while John Brown and Elie Okobo added 11 apiece, making light of Walker’s forgettable evening which prompted visiting coach Sasa Obradovic to stress that the former four-time NBA All-Star was far from his best shape.

“It’s his first game after a long time, I am not even sure when was the last time he played,” Obradovic said during Wednesday’s post-game press conference.

“It’s pretty obvious he’s not had a competitive game in a while and he probably lacks some match fitness, too, but he is willing to work hard to reproduce some of his NBA form. I am very glad to have a player and a character like him on the team.”

Plagued by injuries in the past few years, Walker came off the bench and scored just 2 points in 10:19 minutes on the court, having sank a pair of free throws and missed all three of his shots from the floor.

Despite Walker’s limited impact, Monaco executed Obradovic’s game plan to perfection against his former club, as the visiting team’s aggressive half-court pressure disrupted Zvezda’s transition of the ball and forced a barrage of tough shots which came to nothing.

### Monaco shot the ball better

The home side hit only 10-of-34 three-pointers (29.4% 3FG) and 17-of-33 from two-point territory (51.5% 2FG), so its 16 offensive rebounds meant little in the big picture because Zvezda converted preciously few second-chance opportunities.

In contrast, Monaco nailed 10-of-23 shots from behind the arc (43.5% 3FG) and 21-of-35 from two-point range (60% 2FG), while it also collected five rebounds more than Zvezda (30-35).

The visitors were well worth their win in one of the most intimidating EuroLeague venues, although former Zvezda stalwart Obradovic was given a standing ovation from the home fans when he stepped out onto the sidelines.

Obradovic’s men then made sure Zvezda failed to pull the red carpet from under his feet and can now look forward to their next home game against ALBA Berlin on Friday night.

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan registered its first win of the 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season, downing Olympiacos Piraeus 65-53 at Mediolanum Forum on Tuesday night. This victory improved Milan to a 1-1 record, while the Reds dropped to 1-2.

On the occasion of his breaking the all-time Turkish Airlines EuroLeague record for career games played, four-time champion Kyle Hines and those around him talked about the magnitude of that accomplishment.


Kyle Hines, Milan: 'Honored to be a part of this competition'

"To this day, if you ask me now, I still feel like I'm 22, 23 years old and I still have that mindset that I'm just really happy to be here and honored to be a part of this competition," Hines says.

Hines [broke the record when he entered for EA7 Emporio Armani Milan](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/kyle-hines-euroleague-appearance-record-games-played/) against his former team, Olympiacos Piraeus, late in the first quarter on Tuesday, giving him 393 games over 14 seasons with four different teams, including CSKA Moscow and his first one in the competition, Brose Bamberg.

"Kyle Hines is a living legend. It's an honor to play with him," Milan teammate Nicolo Melli says. "He's a big part of the history of EuroLeague, so he is going to be remembered as one of the biggest players who ever played this tournament."

His coach Ettore Messina recalled that Hines had started as a pro in the Italian second division before building his "unbelievable career."

"The way he handled himself, the example that he set, the intelligence and the ability to play the big moment: all those things together show what kind of person and player Kyle Hines has been for years and years," Messina said.

With the record falling in Round 3 of at least 34 this season, Hines stands to continue adding to his legacy as the only modern player to win the EuroLeague title twice with two different clubs.

"I think I've been part of some of the most memorable moments in this league's history, and I'm happy still be here and still competing at a high level," Hines concludes. "That's what I cherish the most."

A win or a loss is not the end of the world in EuroLeague. As I said some days ago, we are in a phase that we are just trying to survive most of the games, results included. Personally, I strongly believe in our roster and its potentials. The good news for us is that Nigel Williams-Goss will play against Partizan, although he has not made a single practice with the rest of the team. As I said, it’s a difficult period for us and we need our supporters encouraging and support. All these years we achieved a lot and we will achieve more in the future. Partizan is a team that plays intense, especially at their home court. They have potentials and weaknesses as well. No Euroleague team is at the best possible condition. Partizan has its coach signature and after the loss in their home at the last game against Barcelona, I am sure that they will come determined to get the win.

Olympiacos is a team that was made to play in the Final Four. Last year they played in the championship game, they missed the title by a millimeter and they played outstanding basketball. This year they had problems with injuries at the beginning and they are currently in that rhythm. However, it will be very difficult in their gym. Olympiacos is a team that has a lot of experience, the same players have been there for years, the coach is the same, they brought in players who stepped in for the players who left. A demanding game awaits us in every sense. What was evident last night against Barcelona is that, if you want to play well in the EuroLeague, you have to play all 40 minutes. There is no room for small mistakes, for taking shots in the early phase of the offense, for not boxing out... The players are aware of everything and know where they went wrong last night, I expect a reaction.

Because of the back-to-back games we do not have the luxury to think about what happened in Milan. This game is over and we have already forgot about it. We have focused on tomorrow’s game against Partizan and we really want the win, in order to make a fresh start. Partizan is a dangerous team, that can score easily with players such are Panter and LeDay. They have full roster, they play tough but if we play good defense and get good rhythm on offence we will dominate.
