Nicolo Mannion (shoulder) returned to domestic action, but has been not played in the EuroLeague since Round 17.

**Zalgiris Kaunas**

Panathinaikos completes signing of Matt Thomas

Panathinaikos Athens has added shooting guard [Matt Thomas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/matt-thomas/008967/) to its roster on a deal until the end of the 2023-24 season, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Thomas (1.96 meters, 28 years old) last played for Chicago of the NBA, averaging 4.1 points and 1.3 rebounds in 39 games in the 2021-22 season. He has one year of experience in the 7DAYS EuroCup, which came with Valencia Basket in 2018-19. In that campaign, he became a EuroCup champion and averaged 12.7 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. Thomas will make his Turkish Airlines EuroLeague debut when he plays his first game for Panathinaikos.

Thomas began his professional career with Obradoiro of Spain in 2017-18 and averaged 15.4 points per game, which saw him earn a move to Valencia. The American played an important role in Valencia's 2018-19 EuroCup campaign, starting 9 of his 23 games and providing a boost on offense with his 12.7 points per contest on 47.7% three-point shooting. After one season at Valencia, Thomas agreed to a deal with Toronto of the NBA. He played 51 games in the NBA in his first season, averaging 4.6 points in 10.3 minutes on the floor. In 2020-21, Thomas suited up for Toronto on 25 occasions, having a scoring average of 2.8 points, before finishing the campaign with Utah, where he averaged 3.1 points in 22 games. The latest double-round week takes flight on Tuesday, with the race for the playoffs intensifying as Round 22 of the regular season opens with a showdown between a pair of first- and third-place teams. Here's your overview of the upcoming action.

Tuesday's action begins with a bang as third-placed Fenerbahce (13-8) welcomes co-leader Olympiacos (14-7). The Round 13 meeting between the teams was an absolute blow-out as Olympiacos triumphed 94-67 behind 21 points from Sasha Vezenkov. The Greek team blitzed for 31 points in the opening quarter in that first game, so Fenerbahce will have to be ready to compete from the opening tipoff, especially after also making a slow start in last week's loss at ASVEL.

On the back of a thrilling overtime win over reigning champ Efes, which saw Darius Thompson set a new EuroLeague season high with 16 assists, playoffs-chasing Baskonia (12-9) will look to keep its offense rolling with a trip to free-falling Milan (6-15). The Italian team has dropped to the bottom of the standings by losing five games in a row, and after allowing 101 points against Monaco last week, Ettore Messina's men will need a major defensive improvement to restrict Baskonia's explosive offense.

Two teams in stellar form, both having won four of their last five games, face off on Spain's east coast as Valencia (11-10) and Bayern (9-12) attempt to continue their progress towards the playoff places. Valencia will probably give a debut to shooter Shannon Evans, but captain Bojan Dubljevic is likely to miss out through injury. Bayern will look for another strong performance from Augustine Rubit, the MVP for January, who has scored at least 13 points in each of the last seven games.

Visiting Maccabi (11-10) is clinging to a place in the top eight despite registering just two road wins all season, but a victory by 8 points or more on Tuesday would be extra valuable to also secure the head-to-head advantage between the teams.

Maximizing its possessions will be vital against a Zvezda team that excels on defense with an average of 77.6 points per game allowed. Zvezda won the first meeting between the teams in December so could claim vital head-to-head superiority this week.

The opening action on Wednesday night will see reigning champ Efes (10-11) seek to snap a two-game losing run with a visit from seventh-placed Zalgiris (12-9), which also needs a response after collapsing in the second half to lose at Panathinaikos last week. Efes, which delivered one of its best performances when the teams met in December, powering its way to a 60-86 road win behind 20 points from Rodrigue Beaubois, will look to be similarly ruthless in Istanbul.

ALBA possesses the league's second-leakiest defense, allowing 83.9 points per game, and that could spell big danger against a Monaco team which reached triple digits in last week's victory over Milan.

Real Madrid vs. Panathinaikos Athens

The first round of the week concludes in the Spanish capital, where co-leader Real (14-7) will look to extend its dominant recent record against Panathinaikos (8-13). Real has won its last 11 home games against the Greek team, dating back nearly ten years to March 2013. Most of those games have been blowouts, with the Spanish team enjoying a double-digit margin in the last four, so Panathinaikos will be battling against history on Wednesday.

### The 2019 champion and Final Four MVP chats with Joe Arlauckas about his life journey, from his childhood in Detroit, USA; to signing with Anadolu Efes last summer

The latest episode of The Crossover with Joe Arlauckas features one of the most dynamic players in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague; Anadolu Efes Istanbul forward [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/) came from humble beginnings to become one of the most accomplished players on the Old Continent.   

A self-described gym rat, basketball wasn't even his favorite sport growing up. That was baseball, which to this day his father still contends Will was better at. But after taking a year off from baseball, he was never able to readjust and basketball fans across Europe are thankful for that.

Clyburn was not a star at his suburban Detroit high school and had few options to play afterward. After a coach saw something in his at an open practice, he wound up at Marshalltown Community College in Iowa. The adjustment period took some time and Clyburn had a pedestrian freshman season, but that summer he put in the extra work that would change his life. 

"I spent 10 days at home and the rest of the time I spent in Iowa by myself with my junior college coach. And we just worked. That’s all we did was work, drills," Clyburn recalled. "I wasn’t disappointed with how my freshman year went, but I knew I could do better. I had a taste of it. I ended up getting invited to a top JUCO players for the summertime \[camp\] and I think that’s where I was kinda like: ‘you got a chance.’ I went there, I played well and that’s when I finally said, okay you actually have a chance to go to a university. And it went up from there." 

His second season forced people to take notice, especially after he scored 54 points in one game. That led to a series of scholarship offers and Clyburn eventually settled on the University of Utah for one season before spending his senior year with Iowa State University. 

Clyburn knew little about basketball in Europe, but was pleased with the offer from ratiopharm Ulm and played his first two professional seasons in Germany before one at Israel's Hapoel Holon under Dan Shamir, who is now an assistant coach at EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. Shamir put in a good word for Clyburn with David Blatt and soon he was signed to play for Darussafaka Istanbul. 

"Once I get to some places, I’m like ‘hey, I made it pretty far. I’m just happy to be here. I beat the odds.' And \[Blatt\] was the first guy that told me don’t see it that way. Don’t look at it that way. I brought you here for a reason. I brought you here to help this team. I think you can help this team," Clyburn said of the start of his time at Darussafaka. "After we had that conversation, he kept his word. I was a part of the team. I was a big part of the team and he gave me freedom to really play my game. He gave me an opportunity. 

Clyburn had a major role as a starter for Darussafaka as it made the playoffs and even took Game 2 of the series from Real Madrid. From there Clyburn signed with CSKA Moscow, where his career reached new heights as he won his first EuroLeague crown and twice to the All-EuroLeague team in five seasons. But, as Clyburn revealed in the podcast, it could have gone very differently. 

He suffered a sprained ankle late in the semifinals victory over Real Madrid that would require surgery that summer. He took a shot just to be able to play in the championship game against Efes. But even that did not help too much. 

"In warmups, I went to test it out to make sure I was good and I jumped and, oh man, it just came just flying back at me. All the pain came out at once and I said, this is not gonna go well for me," he said.

"Still to this day, I’m just lucky that Efes never decided to attack me off the dribble because for sure I couldn’t play against it. If they were to decide to bring me to pick on Shane \[Larkin\] and had me out there on Shane. Done. Bring me to Vasa \[Micic\]. Done. It didn’t matter. I had Adrien \[Moerman\]. He doesn’t dribble the ball, just crashes the boards. I could do that. But if I had to move, no way…"

Clyburn went for 20 points on 4-for-6 three-point shooting in that game to take home 2019 Final Four MVP honors. It would be his last big game for a while as he suffered a torn ACL early the following season. But Clyburn worked hard to get back and was a dominant player again after that. 

A family man, Clyburn’s wife and kids have been there for him through the highs and lows and he has developed a strategy to help him deal with problems before he goes home.

"I use my time to reflect on the drive home. Especially after losses, bad practices, stuff like that. That drive home is kind of where I reflect and think about those things that went wrong, what I did right and whatnot. But when I walk through that door and my family and my kids are there, that life is gone, basketball is cut. Now I have a new responsibility when I walk in this house and they have nothing to do with that basketball stuff."

At age 32, Clyburn still has plenty of great basketball in front of him and he is certain to play a key role as his new team, two-time defending champion Efes, looks to challenge for another ‘ship this season.

MVP for January: Augustine Rubit, FC Bayern Munich

Starting the new year in 17th place amid a spate of injuries, FC Bayern Munich needed an anchor if it was going to climb back into the playoffs race in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. A month later, Bayern is very much back in that race after having found its anchor in forward [Augustine Rubit](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/augustine-rubit/006477/), who is Euroleague Basketball's choice as MVP for January. 

Rubit supplied regular, efficient offense as Bayern went 4-1 in January and vaulted to 13th place, just two victories from the playoffs places with 13 rounds left to play. He scored between 13 and 23 points in all five January games, making more than 70% of all his shots. He ranked second among all EuroLeague players during the month in both scoring and performance index rating, giving Bayern's offense the stability it needed to make a run for its third consecutive playoffs berth despite having started the season 0-5.

The MVP of the Month award is now in its 18th season. The winner is named by Euroleague Basketball based on his and his team's performance during the month in question. The January MVP award includes the five games that all teams played between Wednesday, January 4 and Friday, January 27. Rubit, 33 , becomes the first Bayern player to win an MVP of the Month honor in the club's eight EuroLeague seasons.

Bayern started 2023 with a bang, topping Panathinaikos Athens [84-68](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/fc-bayern-munich-panathinaikos-athens/E2022/148/) at home for what remains its biggest win all season as Rubit starred with 23 points on 9-for-13 two-point and 5-for-6 free-throw shooting. His 34 PIR that night matched Rubit's career best in five EuroLeague seasons and 140 games. Rubit would score 13 points and post a PIR of 14 as Bayern followed up with a [92-79](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/fc-bayern-munich-cazoo-baskonia-vitoria-gasteiz/E2022/158/) home win against Cazoo Baskonia-Vitoria Gasteiz, avenging a 25-point road loss just a month earlier. Rubit had 21 points and a PIR of 26 in Bayern's sole January defeat, a [79-71](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/fenerbahce-beko-istanbul-fc-bayern-munich/E2022/163/) decision on the floor of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul. Bayern stayed on the road to rally past Anadolu Efes Istanbul 81-89 as Rubit contributed 14 points, 9 of those as Bayern came back from a 13-point deficit with 7 minutes to play. Bayern finished the month beating Virtus Segafredo Bologna [91-84](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2022-23/fc-bayern-munich-virtus-segafredo-bologna/E2022/189/) behind Rubit's game highs of 18 points and 21 PIR. 

Rubit finished his stellar month of play with averages of 17.8 points and 21.0 PIR. He made a league-high 32 two-pointers at a rate of 72.1% for January. He also hit 4 of his 6 three-point attempts (66.7%) and 15 of 20 free throws (75%). Bayern fans will be able to show their appreciation when Rubit receives his award at an upcoming home game.

Two of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s iconic rivalries were renewed in Round 21 as FC Barcelona visited Real Madrid and Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade took on Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade. Both derbies lived up to the hype with Partizan and Madrid earning a measure of revenge for the one-possession losses they suffered earlier in the regular season.

Both games also featured several heroic efforts—both expected and unexpected. [Zach LeDay](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/zach-leday/008987/) had one of the best shooting games of his career going 4-5 from beyond the arc to help Partizan keep Zvezda at bay. After being held scoreless through the first three quarters, [Sergio Llull](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sergio-llull/tgb/) rattled off 15 points in the fourth quarter to get Madrid its first lead and ultimately push the game to overtime.

One of the challenges of guarding and gameplanning in the EuroLeague is how many different players can beat you on any given night and even any given possession. While Leday ranks fourth for Partizan in scoring, Round 21 was his fourth time this season leading them in total points this season. Llull in contrast, has led Real Madrid in scoring only once and tallied over 15 points only twice this season but topped that number in less than a quarter against Barcelona.

The unpredictability of who might catch fire on any given night is one of the defining characteristics of the EuroLeague at the moment. In total, 128 players have led their team in scoring at least once this season equating to roughly 7 different players per team. Even the league’s most productive players often work in concert with a deep cast of contributors. For example, [Sasha Vezenkov](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/sasha-vezenkov/003469/) is having a historic year offensively but has still only led Olympiacos Piraeus in scoring a EuroLeague-leading 13 times on the year. Alphonso Ford trophy favorite [Dwayne Bacon](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/dwayne-bacon/011286/) has led Panathinaikos Athens in points scored only 11 times.

As the graph above shows, most teams have had 7 or 8 different players lead them in scoring at least once this season. Virtus Segafredo Bologna sits on the high end of the league this season with 10 as the number of accomplished veterans they have coming off the bench has allowed them to lean into whoever steps up on a given night. The reigning champions, Anadolu Efes Istanbul, in contrast, have had only 4 different players lead them in scoring this season. Much of that can be chalked up to the difficulties opposing defenses have had slowing down their top-ranked offense—Efes only had 5 different leading scorers on their way to the title last season.

Looking at the level of balance in the league a little closer, of the 273 players to use at least one possession this season, only 17 players are using over 15% of their team’s possessions and only 4 are using over 20%: [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/), [Will Clyburn](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/will-clyburn/004888/), [Vasilije Micic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/vasilije-micic/002580/), and [Lorenzo Brown](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/lorenzo-brown/009622/). The presence of both Clyburn and Micic in that upper tier can be traced almost exclusively to the lengthy absence of Shane Larkin. Though a team like Efes can get by being a little more predictable because they have the talent to dictate the action on the offensive end, the depth of the league is often an x-factor game-to-game as Llull proved.

The accomplished 35-year old veteran has had no shortage of big performances over his 16 EuroLeague seasons, but he nearly tripled his scoring average to play the hero in Madrid’s important win over Barcelona. The style of play and balance in the EuroLeague yields a notable numbers of opportunities for those types of moments.

What we can learn from teams' leading scorers

EuroLeague week on social media

LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne headed into Thursday’s showdown with Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul short-handed, with injuries sending David Lighty and Jonah Mathews onto the sidelines alongside long-term absentee Joffrey Lauvergne. That forced ASVEL coach TJ Parker to list just 10 players in his roster, but that group did include one notable addition as Dee Bost played his first home game at Astroballe after debuting in the previous week’s win at EA7 Emporio Armani Milan.

If ASVEL fans were wondering what their new signing had to offer, Bost soon showed them. He drained a triple inside the opening minute, added another 30 seconds later and then, incredibly, struck yet another three on the next possession, meaning that he had scored 9 points in the first 103 seconds of his home debut. Another pair of three-pointers followed before halftime, and although Bost then didn’t add any more scoring to his game, he certainly did not stop contributing to ASVEL’s dominant 91-77 victory over the Turkish high-flier as he focused on providing for his teammates, finishing the game with 15 points – all coming from three-point range in the first half – and 9 assists.

Dee Bost shined in his home debut for ASVEL

Bost is a familiar figure to fans of European basketball. An eight-season veteran of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and 7DAYS EuroCup with more than 100 appearances across those two competitions, the 33-year-old point guard has traveled the continent far and wide in the process of representing – chronologically – Buducnost Podgorica, Trabzonspor, Stelmet Zielona Gora, AS Monaco, Zalgiris Kaunas, Strasbourg, Khimki Moscow Region, Monaco (again, and this time winning the EuroCup), Galatasaray Istanbul and now, finally, ASVEL.

That long list of destinations makes Bost a journeyman in the most literal sense but, after replacing the departed Parker Jackson-Cartwright in the ASVEL roster, the early signs are that he still has plenty to offer and his backcourt partnership with another veteran, Nando De Colo, could yet give the French champ an outside shot at mounting a serious push for the playoffs over the coming weeks.

Bost’s ability to both score and orchestrate gave more freedom to De Colo, who again showed his class with a superb performance yielding 26 points on 9-of-14 field goal shooting, along with 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 1 steal. Between the two of them, ASVEL’s new playmaking duo registered 41 points with 14 assists, and De Colo noted the ease with which Bost has adjusted to his new surroundings, saying: "We know Dee is a good player for our team. He’s got experience, it’s easy for him to understand our game and play together."

Zaccharie Risacher highlights against Fenerbahce

If those two are coming towards the end of their career, at the other end of the age scale there is also reason for ASVEL optimism in the form of 17-year-old Zaccharie Risacher, whose career-high 10 points on 4-of-4 two-point shooting – including a thrilling alley-oop connection with De Colo – made him the other main shining light in the victory over Fenerbahce.

The son of French basketball great Stephane Risacher, who won a silver medal with France at the 2000 Olympics and played six EuroLeague seasons with Olympiacos and Unicaja, Risacher is further proof of ASVEL’s long-standing commitment to developing young players. And although it would be unrealistic to expect a teenager to perform at such a high level every week, his energy and ambition was the perfect foil for Bost and De Colo’s backcourt control in the win against Fenerbahce. If that formula keeps on working and some of the injured players start returning, plenty more victories should follow.
