Panathinaikos fueled its comeback with rebounds
Panathinaikos Athens shot a little better in the second half than the first as it rallied from 15 points down to win 90-77 in overtime against AX Emporio Armani Milan, but the big difference for the winners after haftime came on the backboards.
The Greens had been out-rebounded 15-24 as Milan took a 33-42 halftime lead. In the last 25 minutes, including overtime, the difference in favor of the hosts was stark. Panathinaikos vacuumed up 19 defensive and 4 offensive rebounds while limiting Milan to just 2 on offense and 14 on defense. That 33-16 second-half difference produced a 38-38 tie in total rebounds.
Keeping Milan to just one shot for almost every possession in those last 25 minutes made all the difference. It helped Panathinaikos get to the free throw line often and making good on 16 of 19 attempts there after the break while Milan took only 6 more free throws, making just 3 of them.
Small forward Mateusz Ponitka was the game's top rebounder with 9, but Derrick Williams and Dwaye Bacon added 7 each, all three of them taking more than any Milan player. Every one counted for the Greens to be able to force overtime with the last basket in regulation and then clean up in the extra period for a 13-point win that meant a 28-point swing on the scoreboard after Milan had led 40-55 with 27 minutes left.
