Panathinaikos outlasts Zvezda in overtime thriller, 111-104

Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens overcame Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade 111-104 in a thrilling overtime battle in the Greek capital.
A high-scoring first half was edged by Zvezda for a 47-49 interval lead. It stayed close right until the final possession, which Zvezda couldn’t convert to win it in regulation, and Panathinaikos controlled the extra five minutes.
Kendrick Nunn paced the home team with 31 points and 10 assists, as Juancho Hernangomez also bagged a double-double 18 points and 11 rebounds. Wenyen Gabriel scored 8 of his 16 points in overtime, while Jerian Grant scored 12 and Omer Yurtseven netted 11. Codi Miller-McIntyre powered Zvezda with 26 points, while former Green Nemanja Nedovic added 22, Filip Petrusev scored 16 and Luka Mitrovic had 13.

Miller-McIntyre’s triple gave Zvezda an early lead, before Petrusev scored twice at the rim either side of a Konstantinos Mitoglou corner three for a 7-7 tie. Three-point plays from Grant and Gabriel sent the host ahead, and Miller-McIntyre and Nunn traded inside blows before Mitoglou made another three-point play. Miller-McIntyre stayed hot with another pair of triples, before Cedi Osman’s deep strike was quickly answered by Dejan Davidovac, Miller-McIntyre – with his fourth triple of the quarter – and Nedovic for a 23-26 Zvezda lead at the end of the first.
Hernangomez and Yurtseven joined the three-point party early in the second, but Mitrovic scored twice at the other end and Miller-McIntyre’s driving layup kept Zvezda ahead, 29-32. Lorenzo Brown’s slaloming score and a pair of Hernangomez deep balls forced a lead change, but Zvezda fought back with Petrusev at the rim and Nedovic from deep, 37-38. Nunn and Nedovic continued the long-range shoot-out, before Miller-McIntyre returned with another layup. Rokas Giedraitis and Petrusev dunked, and another Nunn three-ball made it 47-49 at the break.
Nedovic and Nunn started the second-half scoring before John Brown and Gabriel netted inside for a 54-54 tie. Nedovic’s fourth triple was answered by Gabriel’s three-point play, and Miller-McIntyre’s magic continued with another deep strike, 57-62. Nunn, Nedovic and Miller-McIntyre all stayed hot by scoring again before Hernangomez made it 66-66. Nedovic and John Brown pushed Zvezda back in front, but Hernangomez and Yurtseven dunked to keep it close. Miller-McIntyre scored again, hurting his ankle in the process, and Yurtseven’s layup-and-one made it 77-77 with 10 minutes left.
Lorenzo Brown and Mitrovic traded inside scores early in the fourth, before Mitrovic’s three-point play was cancelled out by another Nunn triple. Kostas Sloukas’s mid-range strike was bettered by Nikola Kalinic’s triple for an 84-85 Zvezda lead with 5 minutes left. Kalinic hit another threeball and Petrusev scored 4 straight points for an 86-94 lead, the biggest margin of the night. Nunn’s sixth triple gave the Greens hope, and Hernangomez added another three-ball to make it 92-94. Sloukas tied it up from the foul line, before Kalinic’s layup was answered by Hernangomez’s long two for another tie, 96-96, with 25 seconds left, and Giedraitis just missed on the final possession.
Kalinic’s tip-in opened overtime and Petrusev added a three-point play, but Gabriel took over with 6 straight points to send the Greens ahead, 104-101. Zvezda could then only score free throws the rest of the way, while Nunn and Gabriel’s inside scores were followed by Grant’s three-pointer to seal the deal.
