Resilient Olympiacos edges Maccabi, 91-94
Olympiacos Piraeus grabbed a narrow 91-94 victory over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Round 10 of the 2024-25 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. The visitors started strong and led 24-29 heading into the second quarter, but Maccabi responded with a 13-0 run to secure a 53-42 cushion at halftime. Yet, Olympiacos tightened up its defense, outscored Maccabi 10-28 in the third and maintained its lead to secure its fifth consecutive victory. The Reds improved to 7-3, while Maccabi dropped to 3-7.
Sasha Vezenkov led all scorers with 21 points and Evan Fournier netted 20. Nikola Milutinov paired his 11 points with 8 rebounds, with Nigel Williams-Goss and Luca Vildoza scoring 10 each. Jaylen Hoard paced Maccabi with 20 points, Levi Randolph netted 15, Roman Sorkin had 13 and Tamir Blatt added 12.

Vildoza and Wenyen Gabriel traded scores inside before 5 points from Vezenkov and a corner triple from Fournier gave Olympiacos an early 2-10 lead. Blatt netted a jumper and Randolph drilled a triple, but Vezenkov added another 6 points to his tally and Moustapha Fall scored in the paint for a 12-20 cushion. A three-pointer from David DeJulius was followed by Milutinov’s first bucket of the night before Kostas Papanikolaou buried one from beyond the arc to make it 16-25. An exchange of blows followed from inside, as buckets from Saben Lee and DeJulius trimmed the deficit to 24-29 after 10 minutes.
Milutinov and Moses Wright opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets, but Maccabi responded with a 7-0 run energized by an explosive Gabriel to make it 31-33. Olympiacos replied with Wright netting a hook and Tyler Dorsey completing a three-point play to restore a 31-38 lead. Maccabi fought back and went on a 13-0 run inspired by Jokubaitis, Hoard and Randolph, who dominated in the paint against the opposing forwards. Sorkin nailed a triple and William Rayman scored a put-back basket before a triple from Lee allowed Maccabi to take a 53-42 lead into the second half.
Thomas Walkup started the third with a midrange jumper, but 4 points from Sorkin gave Maccabi a 57-44 lead. A Vildoza triple was followed by Fournier’s three-point play before another triple from the former brought Olympiacos within 59-55. Gabriel netted inside, but 7 points from Fournier put Olympiacos ahead, 61-62. The visitors tightened up their defense and ran in transition, extending their run to 2-13 for a 63-70 cushion after 30 minutes.
Nigel Williams-Goss and Vildoza scored inside but 4 points from Randolph and a bucket from Hoard trimmed the deficit to 71-74. Buckets from Milutinov and Fournier sandwiched a Sorkin triple before a three-point play from Williams-Goss opened a 76-81 margin. Yet, Rayman nailed one from deep and Hoard made 2 from the line to bring Maccabi within 81-82 with 2:47 remaining. A Fournier triple was followed by a layup from Jokubaitis in transition, but Williams-Goss drilled a corner three-pointer to restore an 83-88 lead.
After Blatt responded with a midrange jumper, a hard-fought Milutinov bucket inside made it 85-90 with a minute left on the clock. Then, Sorkin netted 3 free throws to make it a 2-point game, but Vezenkov hit from the charity stripe to make it a two-possession duel, 88-92, with 16 seconds to go. Blatt nailed a quick triple before Vezenkov scored free throws for a 91-94 cushion with 0:10 left. In Maccabi’s last possession of the game, Lee missed from deep to seal the outcome.
