ALBA Berlin took down another Russian team in surprise fashion as it fended off Zenit St Petersburg 76-67 at home on Thursday.
Lo leads ALBA over Zenit 76-67
ALBA wasted a 13-point lead but survived a real fight to improve to 8-16 with its second win in the last three games - following an 81-53 rout of UNICS Kazan. Maodo Lo scored 15 points - including a dagger three-pointer with 62 seconds left - to pace ALBA, which had six players score either 8 or 9 points. Christ Koumadje collected 9 points and 5 rebounds, Yovel Zoosman had 9 points and 7 rebounds and Tamir Blatt chipped in 8 points and 4 assists. Zenit lost its second straight game in dropping to 14-9. Billy Baron and Mindaugas Kuzminkas both scored 18 points and Jordan Mickey had 10 points in the loss.

Zenit started the scoring with a Mickey layup. The guests failed to score over the next 3 minutes and Luke Sikma hit a layup and three-pointer in a 9-0 ALBA answer to go up 9-2. Jordan Loyd ended the drought but it took another 4 minutes for Zenit to score again while ALBA had Lo pick up 5 points to extend the lead to 16-4. Andrey Zubkov and Kuzminskas both hit triples for Zenit only to see Blatt respond from deep and the margin grow to 13 points before settling at 23-12 after 10 minutes.
After Zubkov opened the scoring in the second quarter, Johannes Thiemann had back-to-back baskets for a 27-14 ALBA cushion. Zenit began getting more scores, with Baron draining a triple and Kuzminskas converting an and-one to lower the deficit to 29-22. Jaleen Smith gave some relief to ALBA with a three-pointer of his own but the Baron barrage continued with 2 more triples and Zenit moved within 32-30 after 2 free throws by Mickey. Fittingly by then, Loyd’s driving layup knotted the game 34-34 at the break.
Mickey’s score to start the second half put Zenit back ahead. ALBA reclaimed the lead, 39-38, on a Jonas Mattisseck three-pointer to start five straight lead changes, with Smith’s triple making it 44-42 being the last. Two Baron jumpers and an assist pushed Zenit back in front 46-48. But it was the hosts who led 51-48 after 30 minutes after a Blatt three-pointer.
Koumadje tallied the first 3 points of the final frame for a 54-48 cushion. After Poythress converted a three-point play at the other end, Zoosman hit a triple and Thiemann free throws made it 59-51. Zenit got the deficit to 59-55, but it could not stop ALBA, which had Zoosman score twice and Lo hit a floater for a 65-58 lead with 3 minutes to play. Zoosman set up a big Ben Lammers alley-oop on the break and then Lo connected on a dagger three-pointer to make it 71-62 with 62 seconds left in the game. Baron hit a triple at the other end, but the deficit was too big and ALBA secured the victory.
