Lauvergne's all-round second-half effort
LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne got its first win of the season, rallying from a 13-point deficit late in the third quarter to stun Zalgiris Kaunas 88-91. Instrumental in the triumph was ASVEL center – and former Zalgiris player – Joffrey Lauvergne, who finished the night with an all-round performance of 13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal, playing 34:14, which is nearly 8 minutes more than the next most-played ASVEL player in Kaunas. What's more, Lauvergne is the only ASVEL player who played all 20 minutes of the second half, during which he scored 10 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. A great effort in a memorable win.
Davies showed up in the clutch
Veteran center Brandon Davies was a big reason why Valencia Basket pulled out a hard-fought 79-71 win over ALBA Berlin. Davies finished the game with 14 points, making 7-of-10 two-point shots, while he also collected 3 assists, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. He had a PIR of 14, and a plus/minus of +11. Even more importantly, the majority of his production came with the game on the line. With Valencia down 63-67 and 3:40 minutes to go in the game, Davies pulled down an offensive rebound that allowed Semi Ojeleye to score a second-chance triple. Then, a minute later, Davies started his personal run of 8 consecutive points to make it 76-69 with 70 seconds left, before icing the game with a dish for Ojeleye's three-point play that secured Valencia's fifth win of the season.
Pierre's record pre-injury impact
Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul held off Olympiacos Piraeus 79-77 on Thursday night in a dramatic finale, as it held on to a big lead it built in the first quarter. The main protagonist of Fenerbahce's fast start was small forward Dyshawn Pierre. In the opening 8 minutes and 20 seconds of the contest, Pierre made all 6 of his shots, going 2-of-2 on two-pointers, 3-of-3 on triples and 1-for-1 from the free-throw line. He amassed 14 points, along with 1 steal, 1 rebound and 2 drawn fouls, helping Fenerbahce jump to a 29-13 lead it never relinquished.
Unfortunately, Pierre exited the game at that time due to a calf strain and he never returned. This injury will sideline Pierre in the coming weeks, but it did not stop him from making a huge impact on the game. As a matter of fact, no player this century has amassed a higher PIR (18) than Pierre in fewer than 10 minutes of playing time.
Satoransky had injured guards' back
FC Barcelona came into its Round 6 game against Panathinaikos Athens without two of its main guards, as Nico Laprovittola and Rokas Jokubaitis were sidelined. Tomas Satoransky stepped up for his team, avoiding mistakes and leading Barca to an 80-72 home victory against the Greens. Satoransky finished the game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers, good for a PIR of 17 in less than 20 minutes on the floor. Satoransky already had those numbers late in the third quarter. When he went to the bench for good, Barca led 61-41 and was well on its way to its fifth victory from six games. Despite playing 22 minutes per night so far this season, Satoransky is helping Barca in many ways, averaging 7.7 points on 42.1% shooting from three-point range, 4.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and just 1.2 turnovers in six appearances, good for a PIR average of 11.0.
Miller-McIntyre almost made history
Chima Moneke stole many of the headlines for his game-winning free throws in Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz’s narrow 84-83 win against Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade, but Codi Miller-McIntyre was ever so close to making EuroLeague history during the game. The EuroLeague rookie almost finished with a triple-double for Baskonia, as he recorded 9 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists in just under 30 minutes on the floor. Miller-McIntyre showed his qualities to new head coach Dusko Ivanovic, who is back at Baskonia for a fourth stint in charge, and it will be interesting to see if he keeps up this level of play in the coming games. Just two players have had a triple-double in the EuroLeague this century, with Nikola Vujcic doing so twice and Nick Calathes achieving this feat once, and Miller-McIntyre almost joined this exclusive club with an incredibly impressive display in Round 6.
