Virtus Segafredo Bologna and aggressive forward Awudu Abass have agreed to stay together for a fourth consecutive season, the club announced on Monday. Abass (1.98 meters, 30 years old) played only seven Turkish Airlines EuroLeague games last season after coming back from a long-term injury, averaged 6.7 points on stellar shooting in those. In games that he appeared in for more than 20 minutes, his scoring average was 11.3 points. Abass has spent his entire career in his native Italy, going from Cantu to Olimpija Milano and Brescia before joining Virtus in 2020.
Virtus, forward Awudu Abass stay together
Strong comeback from long-term injury
Abass's arrival to Bologna coincided with Virtus winning its first Italian League title in more than 20 years in 2021. But in September of that year he suffered a torn ACL in his right knee and missed the next year-and-a-half, during which Virtus became the EuroCup champion and rejoined the EuroLeague after a long lapse. On his first night back in the competition after a five-year absence, Abass had 10 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block to help Virtus down Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 88-83. He finished last EuroLeague season having shot 57.1% on two-pointers and 58.8% on threes in his 117 minutes on the floor for Virtus.
All told, Abass has 32 career EuroLeague games with Cantu, Milan and Virtus, with averages of 4.0 points and 1.8 rebounds while making a reputation as a defensive stopper. In the EuroCup, he's averaged 7.4 points and 3.2 rebounds over 72 career games with Cantu, Brescia and Virtus.
