Zvezda, Coach Sfairopoulos pen extension
Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade announced on Monday that it has signed a two-year extension with head coach Ioannis Sfairopoulos. The new deal will keep the sides together through the 2026-27 season.
The Greek tactician first joined the club in October 2023 on a two-year deal. Sfairopoulos, 57, has Zvezda currently in sixth place in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague standings with an 11-8 record.
His career record in the EuroLeague is 153-124, which breaks down to 76-46 with Olympiacos Piraeus, 56-50 with Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and 21-28 with Zvezda. Sfairopoulos's career 55.2% winning rate ranks 14th among head coaches with at least 100 EuroLeague games.
He led Olympiacos to a pair of runner-up finishes in the EuroLeague. In his first season in the competition, the Reds reached the 2015 championship game but fell to host Real Madrid. Similarly, they reached the 2018 final together only to lose to Fenerbahce in Istanbul.
