A mesh of two passions, one for innovation and technology, and another for basketball, was at full display in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, where Euroleague Basketball's premium partner Motorola introduced its eagerly awaited new line of products, but gave it a strong basketball flavor.

A two-day experience took place at several different locations in the basketball-loving city, but most importantly at two of the city's most iconic basketball sites - the Belgrade Arena and the outside courts within the spectacular downtown Kalemegdan fortress.

Motorola, a Lenovo company since 2014, has been at the forefront of innovation as a key factor in the transformation of smartphone technology. The guests in attendance not only had a chance to get the first in-depth look with Motorola's new products, motorola Edge 50 Neo, motorola Edge 50, moto G35 5G and moto G55 5G.

They also were on a receiving end of a full EuroLeague experience.

The series of events that took place were enhanced by the presence of a handful EuroLeague stars of the past and present, highlighted by the Euroleague legends such as Ibrahim Kutluay, Igor Rakocevic, Ramunas Siskauskas, Dejan Tomasevic and Nikola Vujcic. Then, there were the EuroLeague stars of today from Belgade's two EuroLeague teams, Partizan Mozzart Bet's Iffe Lundberg and Duane Washington Jr. as well as Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet's Luka Mitrovic and Uros Plavsic.

Taking the EuroLeague flavor to another level was the presence of the EuroLeague trophy, the same one that the team captains of the championship-winning clubs lift at the end of each season.

At Belgrade Arena, the guests got a players' pre-game perspective, walking from the locker rooms through player's tunnel only to emerge on the EuroLeague court. A centerpiece of the experience was a basketball bootcamp, organized by Motorola in collaboration with Euroleague Basketball, held on Crvena Zvezda courts within the historic Kalemegdan Fortress.

This unique setting offered an unforgettable mix of sport, passion, and talent, while giving the guests a chance to meet and interact with the Euroleague legends and top local players, while trying out their own basketball skills while capturing all this experience through the lens of their new Motorola devices.

The 2023-24 Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season was full of drama, excitement and excellent basketball, but away from the courts, Euroleague Basketball’s efforts have been rewarded with two nominations at the [Sports Business Awards 2024](https://sportsbusinessawards.co.uk/2024-finalists).

Following the major success of the [EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge](https://euroleaguefantasy.euroleaguebasketball.net/en) and the inaugural [Hoop District tournament](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/hoop-district-finals-team-barcelona-is-the-first-ever-champion/), the former has been put forward for the Best Fan Engagement Program award, while the latter has been nominated for the Best Brand Activation Involving Sport prize. These trophies will be awarded at an event in London, England, in late November.

As Euroleague Basketball has looked to drive even more engagement in the league, the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge has played a key role in helping transform the organization’s digital ecosystem. Throughout the thrills and spills of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup seasons, the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge provides fans with a chance to put themselves in the shoes of Zeljko Obradovic, Ergin Ataman or Pablo Laso.

Over the 34-round regular season, then during the playoffs and the Final Four, the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge is there to accompany fans as they compete for fantasy glory. Fans create their roster for the campaign using a maximum of 100 credits and can make three changes to their team each week, with unlimited trades also available at certain points during the season. Year on year, interest in playing the EuroLeague Fantasy Challenge has continued to grow, resulting in record numbers during the 2023-24 season.

Last year, 186,716 fans played the official fantasy game for the EuroLeague and EuroCup, which is a whopping 154% increase compared to the 2022-23 campaign. In terms of the total number of teams, 308,000 squads were created in the 2023-24 season, a 178% jump from the previous year’s figures. This is further evidence of the way in which the EuroLeague has been able to enhance its presence, drawing in new fans in the process.

After a thrilling evening of basketball and entertainment, the 2024 Hoop District champion has been crowned as Team Barcelona beat Team Berlin 22-7 in the final. Led by team captain Tresco and co-star Ari Geli, Team Barcelona lost 18-20 to C-Bas’s Team Berlin earlier in the evening but were able to exact some revenge once the €10,000 cash prize was on the line.

Hoops District/Off-Court gave the Final Four a new twist

Another initiative that gained plenty of attention was the introduction of the first-ever Hoop District tournament, which saw influencers compete in a preliminary tournament in Paris, France, before the four finalist teams battled it out at Kraftwerk Berlin, Germany, during Final Four week. The four final teams competing for the €10,000 prize – led by [@tresco_ball](https://www.instagram.com/tresco_ball/), [@sbb_uk](https://www.instagram.com/sbb_uk/), [@cbas](https://www.instagram.com/cbas/) and [@\_jamaaad](https://www.instagram.com/_jamaaad), respectively – had a combined 1.5 million followers on Instagram alone, which combined with the EuroLeague’s account took the total following to over 2.5 million.

One of the major benefits of Hoop District was that younger fans were able to engage with Euroleague Basketball, even if they were not too familiar with the EuroLeague or EuroCup beforehand. This feeds into Euroleague Basketball’s determination to increase fan engagement and create an even bigger basketball community, one which will hopefully begin – or continue – to engage with the continent’s two leading basketball competitions.

The Sports Business Awards, launched in 2017, highlight and reward achievement by those behind the scenes in the sporting industry and celebrate the vital influence of business within sport by recognizing the organizations, teams and individuals who excel in their roles.

2024 Euroleague Basketball FanXP Playoffs are set

After 16 selected businesses showcased their products during the [2024 Euroleague Basketball FanXP Online Qualifier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/news/euroleague-basketballs-fanxp-innovation-program-announces-selected-startups/) on July 10, eight projects have advanced to the playoff phase, which will be held at Euroleague Basketball's headquarters in Barcelona, Spain.

These eight companies will pitch their solutions to an external jury made up of four experts from the sports business industry. These individuals will be announced soon.

Afterward, the best four businesses will secure a spot at SPORTBIZ EUROPE: Barcelona Edition in October and will fight for a €10,000 prize to invest in implementing their solutions within the esteemed environments of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup.

Thirty-four applicants were cut down to 16 candidates from 12 different countries, with these companies having the chance to pitch their ideas during the Online Qualifier. The 16 startups had six minutes to pitch their projects, followed by a four-minute Q&A session with members of the jury, which consisted of four Euroleague Basketball executives: Gawain Davies, Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships and Licensing; Alex Ferrer Kristjansson, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications; Diego Fernandez Bonet, Director of Communications; and Joan Carles Ros, Senior Manager of Business Intelligence and Analytics.

Once all the companies had made their pitches, the jury met to share their votes. The eight companies who had the most votes would move on to the next round. The businesses that made the cut are:

Euroleague Basketball competitions extend TV deals in Italy with SKY and DAZN

Euroleague Basketball is thrilled to announce the renewal of TV rights in the Italian territory for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague and BKT EuroCup competitions for the 2024-25 season. This ensures that Italian basketball fans will continue to have access to top-tier European basketball action through their preferred platforms, Sky and DAZN.

"Finalizing these broadcast agreements with SKY and DAZN guarantees that the best of European basketball will be delivered to our passionate fans in Italy. Euroleague Basketball approves potential alternative venues for Israeli teams' home games

Euroleague Basketball has approved alternative venues for Israeli teams to play their 2024-25 home games should the impossibility of hosting games in Israel due to the current situation persist.

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv has proposed hosting all its home games at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall in Serbia's capital, Belgrade, while Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem and Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv have proposed playing their home games at Samokov Arena in Samokov, Bulgaria.

The Israeli teams played their home games last season at alternative venues due to security concerns derived from the ongoing armed conflict in the region, with the aim always being to ensure the safety and well-being of players, staff, and fans.

Euroleague Basketball will continue to monitor the evolution of the situation, while staying in contact with all related parties, and will announce any modifications regarding the above decisions in the case that the situation in the region returns to normal.

Doctors, media, marketing and ticketing executives get the ball rolling for next season

The off-season is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the previous campaign and to look ahead to the next. Over the course of the last week, club executives came together in Barcelona, Spain, to take part in a series of meetings as part of the Euroleague Basketball Annual Workshops.

First to get around the table were the doctors, who had a chance to see each other at the Euroleague offices in Barcelona on Wednesday, June 26. There, the new database to be utilized by all teams was presented, which will enable optimization of injury statistics and improve the standardization of data sharing. The availability of players, the relationship between the competition calendar and injuries, and the use of new technologies by the medical department were all analyzed, among other topics.

Six days later, it was the turn of the media directors. Once again at the Euroleague offices, Euroleague Basketball staff members put on a presentation for the executives that reflected on the incredible numbers achieved last season and the goals for the coming campaign. In between, the directors offered their opinions on certain topics, leading to a fascinating debate.

As Euroleague Basketball continues to try and get even more people interested in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, the different initiatives proposed – such as having a greater social media presence at games, the introduction of more podcasts and vodcasts, and new all-access documentary-style series – hope to do just that.

"The Euroleague meeting between Media Directors certainly represents one of the most important and, at the same time, most enjoyable moments of the year,” said Jacopo Cavalli, Head of Press and Communications at Virtus Segafredo Bologna. “Talking about communication strategies, confronting each other on the various issues that have emerged during the very long and demanding season, and looking together for new ways of interaction between the EuroLeague, its clubs and fans are an integral and fundamental part of our work. I would like to thank Euroleague Basketball for the excellent organization, timely preparation of the meeting and logistical management."

The following day, Wednesday, July 3, the marketing and ticketing executives listened to a number of presentations by Euroleague Basketball staff members. After the first part of the session, in which the importance of the Euroleague’s different target audiences was explained the clubs’ representatives from marketing and ticketing had to put on their thinking caps as they were put into groups with their fellow compatriots, with at least two Euroleague Basketball staff members assigned to each country. Then, following a discussion about how to target one of these target audiences, one person from each group gave a presentation to those in attendance.

"Meeting the other marketing executives from the Euroleague teams was invaluable for putting faces to names and discussing how we can elevate the basketball industry in our respective countries and across Europe,” commented Victor Alvarez Esteban, Head of Marketing and Communications at AS Monaco. “AS Monaco Basket has ambitious plans for the marketing and commercial sides of the business, with the Euroleague providing key support for their implementation. At the start of the next season, we will launch a new website and an app. By mid-2025, we will have renewed our brand and visual identity to strengthen AS Monaco's presence as a global brand."

Ticketing took centre stage afterwards with a talk on the data found regarding ticketing and how this affects all 18 EuroLeague clubs, with the digital team going on to point  to the success of the ‘Buy tickets’ feature on the EuroLeague’s official website. The marketing and branding executives from the clubs also got to hear, about the plans for the 2024-25 season activations and campaigns, among many other topics.

Vassilis G. Parthenopoulos named EuroLeague Executive of the Year for 2023-24

Euroleague Basketball is pleased to announce that Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens president Vassilis G. Parthenopoulos has been chosen as the 2023-24 Gianluigi Porelli EuroLeague Executive of the Year.

Parthenopoulos played an integral role behind the scenes in helping Panathinaikos end its 13-year wait to win the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague championship, while the club also reached the Final Four for the first time in 12 years.

The Executive of the Year award honors the person and club whose management decisions have best exemplified the EuroLeague's commitment to excellence in all facets of club direction during the previous season. Among the categories considered before casting votes are sporting merits, game-day revenues, fan experience, and marketing and communications.

Last summer, Panathinaikos had come off a season in 2022-23 that saw the Greens finish in 17th place in the EuroLeague with a 9-23 record. A complete reset was needed, and Mr. Parthenopoulos was the person tasked by Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos to bring the Greens back to the top.

Panathinaikos’s revolution started as early as June 2023 by appointing a serial winner as head coach, as Ergin Ataman – winner of back-to-back EuroLeague titles in 2021 and 2022 – left Anadolu Efes Istanbul to join the Greens. Then the next big dominoes to fall were the signings of All-EuroLeague First Team center Mathias Lessort from Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade and Kostas Sloukas, who decided to depart Olympiacos Piraeus, Panathinaikos’s biggest rival, after finishing as a runner-up in the EuroLeague.  Panathinaikos Sports Area, managed by Basketball Director, Dimitrios Kontos and Technical Director, Sani Becirovic brought a total of 12 new faces who brought back optimism to OAKA.

That was reflected in Panathinaikos averaging 14,526 fans per home game, the fourth-highest average attendance in the regular season in 2023-24 and an increase of 45% compared to the previous campaign. The good results were a big driving factor, with the various improvements made by the directorate having a positive impact not only on the roster but also with the activations put on by the club before, during and after the games. Together, this helped the Panathinaikos fans stay engaged all season long.

Parthenopoulos, who formerly held the position of CEO at Panathinaikos, is the current president at the club and has an impressive background with experience in various industries and roles. His tenure as CEO of Ferrari Greece & Cyprus, General Manager of Panathinaikos FC, and membership on the Board of Directors of major private sector companies highlights his extensive leadership experience. Additionally, his involvement in entrepreneurial ventures and co-founding of companies in communication/international business advisory and environmental EU projects showcases his diverse skill set. Furthermore, his involvement as a member of the SAS regiment special forces as a major highlights his exceptional leadership skills and experience in high-pressure environments. His educational background, including a BA in Economics Business Studies from Melbourne University, Australia, and a Diploma in Marketing & Management from Royal Melbourne College, Australia, further underlines his qualifications.

The Gianluigi Porelli EuroLeague Executive of the Year has been awarded annually since 2005 and is handed out once the season has come to an end. The executive award recognizes those whose efforts build Turkish Airlines EuroLeague clubs into success stories. Mr. Porelli, who served as president of Virtus Bologna for more than two decades, was among the founders of ULEB and later its president. He passed away in 2009. This is the second time that a Panathinaikos executive has earned this honor after Pavlos and Thanasis Giannakopoulos secured the award in the 2010-11 season.

The clubs were selected for their excellence among their colleagues based on marketing initiatives they had carried out in areas such as digital strategy, sponsorship activation, brand development and game presentation, among others.

### Golden Devotion Award: FC Bayern Munich

Bayern was rewarded for its successful [LED GlassFloor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQEH_x76rgk), which it used to raise awareness of the club’s new partnership with BMW and to promote a positive and emotional perception of the German automobile manufacturer. Via the LED GlassFloor, Bayern generated content for online and TV distribution.

The LED GlassFloor was one among many successful marketing projects undertaken by Bayern. The club also launched the “Dunks for Tomorrow” fundraising campaign for SOS Children's Villages; used influencers and content creators to raise its reach on social media; installed an AR Photobooth at BMW Park; and distributed VIP scarves, slapsticks and LED wristbands for spectators at BMW Park.

The stands at BMW Park were sold out for a club-record 13 times out of the club’s 17 EuroLeague home games. All told, 95 percent of available tickets were sold for the highest ticketing revenue ever in club history.

### Silver Devotion Award: Anadolu Efes Istanbul

Efes repeated as the silver devotion winner after placing first in 2022. The club was celebrated for its “Not One Day For Equality” campaign to promote gender equality.

As part of the campaign, Efes increased the number of female employees in the club, ensured equal pay for women and men working in the same positions, raised the rate of female employees at agencies working for the club from 27% to 40%, raised the number of female security personnel working on game days from 10% to 25 %, raised the number of female ushers from 50% to 60%, and raised the number of female ticket inspectors from 25% to 35%. Moreover, the Anadolu Efes Fan Club reached its target of 50% female membership.

Efes also prioritized brands conducting special activities for women in their sponsorship agreements and maintained a 50-50 gender rate among One Team participants and special projects and activities focusing on gender equality.

At the March 7, 2024, game against FC Bayern Munch – the day before International Women’s Day, Efes publicized its effort with a video featuring players and coaches, with visuals on the arena’s LED screens, entertainment area and in the event announcements and through a televised message via the official broadcaster. At halftime of the game, female members of the Anadolu Efes Sports Clubs were honored on the court and a jersey signed by female fans was presented to team captain Shane Larkin.

### Bronze Devotion Award: Zalgiris Kaunas

The 2019 Golden Devotion Award winner, Zalgiris’s marketing department brought home bronze this year for its successful[ rebranding campaign](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63hDeZfFl_w). Zalgiris changed its logo, introduced a new custom font (Zalgiris Sans) and established new brand identity milestones.

The campaign achieved 5 million direct impressions and mentions in 30 media outlets for a media value of 100,00€. The club’s online store saw a 110% increase in sales from September to March. Zalgiris also sold out 16 of its 17 EuroLeague games with 350,000 fans in attendance, a 10% increase from the previous season.

Together with Lithuanian hip-hop celebrity OG Version, the club introduced the Zalgiris Timeless merchandise collection. The new products and rebranding campaign attracted more fans than ever to the online store for a 38% growth in revenue and a 600% increase in app users.
