Valencia comes back for unthinkable 80-81 victory over Cedevita
U18 Valencia Basket remained perfect at the Adidas NextGen Munich tournament by rallying in the closing seconds to beat U18 Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana 80-81. Tomas Talcis converted a layup with 2 seconds to play to move Valencia to 2-0 in Group A. Nicolas Gomez collected 20 points and 10 rebounds, Pau Torrens had 19 points, Talcis finished with 12 points and Alex Blanco chipped in 11 points and 8 assists. Cedevita dropped to 1-1 despite Mark Morano scoring 30 points with 10 rebounds and Luka Stojic scoring 14 points.
Valencia needed more than 2 minutes to score and fell behind 7-0 and it was 11-4 early on. Valencia got back into the game and went ahead 14-17 and 17-21 with the score 18-21 after 10 minutes. Valencia started to take control and used a 2-15 run to take a 22-36 lead. Cedevita held the Spanish side scoreless for nearly 4 minutes and was down 32-37 at intermission.
Valencia three times increased the lead to nine points and was up 41-50. Cedevita charged back into the game with a 14-5 spurt to tie the game. And it went back in front 61-57 after two triples. Cedevita was leading 61-60 going into the fourth quarter.
Valencia was down just 63-62 but watched as Cedevita picked up eight straight points to lead 71-62. The Spanish side was not done yet and twice trimmed the gap to five points including 75-70 with 1:15 minutes left. Stojic made four of six free throws for a 79-74 lead with 31 seconds. Javier Viguer drained a corner three-pointer and then Torrens scored after a steal to even it at 79-79. Samba Gueye only made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to give Valencia the chance to win and Talcis hit the game-winning driving layup with 2 seconds to go.
