U18 Olympiacos Piraeus finished the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Patras in seventh place after defeating host U18 Promitheas Patras 59-57.
Olympiacos prevails over Promitheas, 59-57, for seventh place
The back-and-forth game was decided on Georgios Spilopoulos’s three-pointer with 43 seconds left. Spilopoulos and Michael Sprintzios both scored 14 points for the winners and Thomas Zorbas added 8 points and 7 rebounds. Tunde Fasasi collected 16 points and 9 rebounds for Promitheas, Ioannis Kanavos added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Nikolaos Vasileiou scored 11 points.
Fasasi scored the first points of the game for Promitheas and Zorbas did the honors for Olympiacos. Veniamin Amposi’s three-point play gave Olympiacos its first lead, 5-3, before the lead switched hands five more times with Nikolaos Plotas scoring 5 points to help Promitheas go up 13-14 after 10 minutes. There were seven more lead changes to start the second quarter until a 10-3 Olympiacos surge for a 29-23 advantage. Promitheas fought back with the next 8 points and led 29-31 at halftime.
Olympiacos started the second half with the first seven points to pull ahead 36-31 before Promitheas answered with a 3-12 run for a 39-43 advantage. Olympiacos had the next four points to even the game 43-43 after 30 minutes. Promitheas kept Olympiacos scoreless for nearly 3 minutes to start the fourth quarter and moved ahead 43-49. Sarantos Sarantopoulos and Sprintzios hit three-pointers to help Olympiacos take a 53-51 lead. Promitheas followed with the next three points to start another back and forth of four lead changes as Spilopoulos hit a three-pointer for a 58-57 lead with 43 seconds to play. After a Promitheas turnover, Spilopoulos made one free throw and Ilias Kourepis and Kanavos both missed in the closing seconds to give Olympiacos the win.
