U18 Next Generation Team Varese collected its second victory in two games as it defeated U18 Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 75-43 in Group A. NGV reeled off a 14-0 run to end the third quarter to pull away and move to 2-0. Mahamadou Diarra was the leading scorer with 14 points and 10 rebounds, David Gomez scored 12 points and Leonardo Marangon picked up 11 points and 9 rebounds. Panathinaikos made just 4-of-39 three-pointers (10.3%) and committed 21 turnovers in dropping to 0-2. Symeon Efstathiou led the Greens with 9 points and Emmanouil Dimou tallied 8 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

### U18 Varese Academy 54-83 U18 Joventut Badalona

U18 Joventut Badalona remained perfect at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese with a comfortable 54-83 victory over host side U18 Varese Academy. The 2013 continental champion finished the third quarter on a 4-19 run to improve to 2-0 in Group A and set up a showdown with U18 Next Generation Team Varese later Saturday for first place in the group. Jordi Rodriguez poured in 22 points with 5 steals to lead Joventut while Aristode Dwayne and Gerard Bosch both scored 12 points and Albert Garrido had 11 points and 7 assists. Varese shot just 24.4% on two-pointers and committed 20 turnovers in dropping to 0-2 in the group. Davide Brembilla had 10 points in the loss and Karl Poom picked up 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

### U18 Casademont Zaragoza 68-45 U18 AX Armani Exchange Milan

U18 Casademont Zaragoza grabbed its first victory at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese by knocking off U18 AX Armani Exchange Milan 68-45 to finish Group B action with a 1-2 record. Zaragoza used an 18-4 run spanning the first two quarters to take control of the game. Aday Mara paced the winners with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Pavle Stosic had 12 points and 10 rebounds, Javier Fernandez scored 11 points and Manuel Zapater added 10 points. Milan made just 3-of-30 three-pointers (10.0%) in falling to 1-2 in the group. Lionel Abega led the team in scoring with 11 points and Samuele Miccoli added 10 points.

### U18 PFYM INSEP Paris 68-39 U18 ratiopharm Ulm

U18 PFYM INSEP Paris coasted its way into the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese first place game by beating U18 ratiopharm Ulm 68-39 to finish the group stage undefeated. The two-time continental champion held Ulm to 11.8% three-point shooting and forced 29 turnovers for a 3-0 mark in Group B. Rayan Rupert paced the winners with 14 points as the only player in double figures. Aurele Brena-Chemille had 9 points and 6 steals, Melvin Ajinca picked up 9 points and 6 rebounds and Mael Hamon Crespin added 8 points and 7 rebounds. Ulm dropped to 1-2 in the group despite Tobias Jensen and Lenny Liedtke both scoring 11 points and Jacob Ensminger tallying 4 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists.

### U18 Joventut Badalona 60-69 U18 Next Generation Team Varese

U18 Next Generation Team Varese clinched a spot in the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese first place game by defeating U18 Joventut Badalona 60-69 to finish Group A action with a 3-0 record. NGV will take on U18 PFYM INSEP Paris on Sunday for a ticket to the ANGT Finals. Zacherie Perrin collected 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead NGV, which is the first of the selection teams to reach an ANGT first place game. Leonardo Marangon, Lucas Giovannetti and David Gomez all scored 11 points and Stellen Rajaofera chipped in 3 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. The 2013 continental champion Joventut finished Group A with a 2-1 record and will play for third place on Sunday. Jordi Rodriguez scored 22 points, including 7 three-pointers - becoming just the 20th place in ANGT history with that many three-pointers in a game.

U18 Varese Academy made history by knocking off U18 Panathinaikos OPAP Athens 78-53 for its first victory at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament. The ANGT Varese host side finished the first half on a 14-0 run and never looked back for a 1-2 record in Group A. Valdo Guimdo picked up 24 points and 10 rebounds while Zhao Wei totalled 21 points, 7 assists and 3 steals and Carlo Cane scored 14 points for the winners. Varese will take on U18 ratiopharm Ulm on Sunday for fifth place. Panathinaikos, which got 11 points from Emmanouil Dimou, will face U18 AX Armani Exchange Milan on Sunday for seventh place.



U18 PFYM INSEP Paris and U18 Next Generation Team Varese advanced to Sunday’s first place game at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese after finishing their respective groups with perfect 3-0 records. The winner of the game will qualify for the ANGT Finals at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Final Four in May, joining ANGT Belgrade first place finisher U18 ASVEL Villeurbanne and ANGT Patras top team U18 Stellazzurra Rome.

Eight teams will participate in the second Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament qualifier of the season from April 1 to 3 in Varese, Italy. A new addition to the tournament is U18 Casademont Zaragoza, replacing U18 Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana.

Varese makes history with first ANGT victory

Valdo Guimdo picked up 24 points and 10 rebounds while Zhao Wei totalled 21 points, 7 assists and 3 steals and Carlo Cane scored 14 points for the winners. Varese will take on U18 ratiopharm Ulm on Sunday for fifth place. Panathinaikos, which got 11 points from Emmanouil Dimou, will face U18 AX Armani Exchange Milan on Sunday for seventh place.

After Cane scored the first points of the game, Dimou converted a three-point play and Neoklis Avdalas had four points for a 4-11 Panathinaikos lead. Varese responded with a 9-2 close to the first quarter, which was deadlocked 13-13. A Thomas Dimitros triple had the Greens up 15-18 before Guimdo scored four points in a 9-0 run to lead 24-18. Varese was up three points when it shut down Panathinaikos for nearly the final 5 minutes and reeled off a 14-0 spurt to lead 40-23 at halftime.

Dimou tallied four points early in the second half to make it 42-27 before Zhou drained two three-pointers and added four more points in a 16-4 run for a 58-31 advantage. And the host side led 59-36 after 30 minutes. Varese made sure Panathinaikos didn’t have any thoughts of a comeback by starting the fourth quarter with a 10-2 surge to lead 69-38. The Greek team did not get closer than 24 points the rest of the way.

Perrin and Marangon opened the game with three-pointers for the selection team while Prey hit from deep for Joventut. Perrin was unstoppable with six more points as NGV led 7-16. Rodriguez knocked down a three-pointer for Joventut while Perrin picked up four more points for a 12-20 lead after 10 minutes. Marangon started the scoring in the second quarter and the advantage was 12-22. Joventut responded with the next 10 points - including three-pointers from Gerard Bosch and Rodriguez - to knot the game at 22-22. NGV responded from deep with Giovannetti and Gomez hitting three-pointers and Perrin picked up another basket as the lead was 25-34 at halftime.  

NGV started the third quarter strong with Gomez hitting one triple and Giovannetti draining back-to-back three-pointers in a 4-16 run for a 29-50 cushion. Rodriguez answered with three triples within 2 minutes and Joventut was within 38-52. The score after 30 minutes was 41-57. Another Rodriguez triple and two scores from Prey cut the margin to 48-60 with 7 minutes to play. Ege Tan Yildizoglu answered with two scores and the lead swelled to 48-64. Joventut was not done yet as Aristode Dwayne knocked down a triple to trim it to 55-65 with 2 minutes left and Martinez’s layup made it 60-67 with 17 seconds remaining. But the hole was too deep for Joventut.

PFYM streaks past Ulm into first place game

Liedtke stopped the drought but PFYM held a 23-7 advantage after 10 minutes. Ulm needed nearly 4 minutes to score in the second quarter and was down 28-7 when Jensen scored. The French side did not let up with Hamon Crespin converting a three-point play and Rupert and Ajinca hitting triples for a 39-13 cushion. Ulm tried to just execute on offense but the score was 41-18 at the break.

Ulm picked up five straight points early in the second half to trim the deficit to 43-23 only to see PFYM reel off a 10-2 surge and the cushion was 53-25. And the former champion was up 55-27 after 30 minutes. Ulm managed to hold PFYM scoreless for nearly 3 minutes to start the fourth quarter but only cut the margin to 55-31. PFYM tallied the next nine points and the rout was complete.

Zaragoza captures first win

Miccoli hit the first basket of the game for Milan and Miguel Flores answered with a three-pointer for Zaragoza. Abega picked up four points and the Italian side led 5-8 and it was 9-12 midway through the quarter. Mara tallied four points for Zaragoza in an 8-3 finish to the first quarter and 17-15 advantage after 10 minutes. Zaragoza had a big start to the second quarter with Alejandro Moreno hitting a triple and Pavle Stosic picking up five points in a 10-1 run to lead 27-16. And the margin was 36-20 at halftime.

Zaragoza picked up the first four points of the second half to extend the lead to 20 points - 40-20.  Milan punched back with the next six points but Zaragoza continued with the momentum and Fernandez had seven points in building a 52-31 lead and it was 56-33 after 30 minutes. Little changed in the final frame with Mara picking up four points as the advantage was 66-39 and any comeback attempt was done for good.

Joventut took over the game though with a 0-18 run including three-pointers from Conrad Martinez, Rodriguez and Dwayne to lead 4-22. Brembilla snapped the nearly 7 minute scoreless stretch and Filipovic Jovan hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer as it was 9-22 after 10 minutes. Varese continued to battle and had the deficit to 16-27 but Bosch, Rodriguez and Garrido were all on target from long range and Joventut was leading 20-40 at halftime.

Rodriguez opened the second half with a three-pointer for a 23-point lead, but Varese put together a strong 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 29-43. Joventut came out of its drought thanks to three-pointers as Bosch, Garrido and Rodriguez hit from deep in a 0-11 answer to lead 29-54. And the cushion was 33-62 after 30 minutes. In the fourth quarter Poom scored seven points to help get Varese within 42-68, but Joventut stood strong and did not let the lead slip below 25 points the rest of the way.

NGV pulls away in second half for second win

Gomez opened the scoring for the selection team with Efstathiou picking up seven points at the other end and Dimou hitting a three-pointer for a 6-10 Panathinaikos lead. Dorde Curcic and Mattia De Martin hit triples of their own to bookend a 10-2 answer for NGV, which was up 16-12 before Neoklis Avdalas’ three-pointer to make it 16-15 after 10 minutes. NGV added the first six points of the second quarter and the margin was 22-15. Ioannis Avdalas countered with two baskets and Dimou’s three-point play had the Greens within 26-24. NGV outscored Panathinaikos 6-1 over the final 3 minutes to lead 32-25 at halftime.

Marangon scored four points as NGV started the second half on a 10-0 run to move ahead 42-25. Chanel Mballa Kayou had five points in a 0-7 Panathinaikos spurt to pull within 42-33. The selection team responded with the next 14 points - six of them coming from Diarra - for a 56-33 advantage after 30 minutes. De Martin drained a three-pointer for the first points of the fourth quarter and NGV was up 61-33 before Dimou finally made two free throws. The Greek side never was able to string together points the rest of the way to hope for a comeback.
