U18 Next Generation Team Patras locked up third place at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Patras after defeating U18 FC Barcelona 68-88. 

NGP too much for Barcelona, grabs third place

Pacome Dadiet led NGP with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Illan Pietrus and Ben Saraf both scored 13 points, Efstratios Kalliontzis had 12 points and Mohamed Diawara finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. The 2016 continental champion Barcelona was led by Teodor Simic with 27 points and Martin Iglesias chipped in 11 points.  

Simic opened the game with a three-point play and picked up 10 points to keep Barcelona close 12-14. Diawara knocked down a three-pointer and Dadiet had six points in helping NGP open a double-digit lead 16-26. And it was 19-26 after 10 minutes. Saraf drained a triple early in the second quarter and the cushion was back to 10 points 21-31. Aaron Ganal hit from deep for the Spanish side but Peteris Pinnis’ three-point play extended the margin to 24-39. Dayan Nessah stepped up with five points and Barcelona was within 33-43 at the break.

Iglesias trimmed the deficit to 37-43 early in the second half only to see Eleftherios-Kosmas Liotopoulos and Pietrus hit three-pointers and the margin was 41-53. Dadiet and Saraf also knocked down triples and the NGP advantage was 48-64, with it being 50-64 after 30 minutes. NGP increased the lead to 18 points multiple times in the fourth quarter before Barcelona managed to trim it to 62-76 with 4 minutes left. But Pietrus and Dadiet both scored five points in a 0-10 spurt to end any doubts.

U18 Helsinki Basketball Academy made more history at the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Patras by knocking off U18 ZPA Tbilisi 59-73 for its second victory and fifth place in its first-ever appearance in the competition.

Helsinki routs Tbilisi, 59-73, to finish debut in fifth place

Helsinki went on a 2-16 run spanning halftime to grab a 15-point lead and never looked back. Miro Little paced the winners with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Olavi Suutela had 11 points. Luka Alavidze collected 14 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals for Tbilisi, which was also making its maiden appearance in the event. Frederiks Meinarts also scored 14 points and Giorgi Ochkhikidze chipped in 12.

After Helsinki jumped ahead with the first 4 points, Tbilisi got 5 points from Giorgi Beruashvili and led 7-4. Suutela answered with 7 points and Erik Muhonen drained a three-pointer in a 2-14 surge to give Helsinki a 9-18 lead, which was 17-22 after 10 minutes. Ochkhikidze scored two baskets and Vache Gegeshidze made a triple to bring Tbilisi within 28-29. Little began to take over with 6 straight points and the Finnish team led 30-38 at the break.

Helsinki kept Tbilisi scoreless for the first 3 minutes of the second half and Rasmus Lindberg scored 4 points to extend the cushion to 30-45. A Ville Karhu triple pushed the lead to 33-50. Tbilisi was not done as it reeled off 8 straight points to pull within 41-50. Helsinki finished the quarter strong as Viljami Vartiainen’s three-pointer made it 42-57 after 30 minutes. Gogita Bukia started the fourth quarter with 5 points as Tbilisi rallied within 49-59. Once again Little stepped up with 6 straight points to start a 0-10 run that made it 49-69 with 3 minutes left. Alavidez made a pair of three-pointers, but the gap was much too large to threaten Helsinki.

U18 Olympiacos Piraeus finished the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Patras in seventh place after defeating host U18 Promitheas Patras 59-57.

Olympiacos prevails over Promitheas, 59-57, for seventh place

The back-and-forth game was decided on Georgios Spilopoulos’s three-pointer with 43 seconds left. Spilopoulos and Michael Sprintzios both scored 14 points for the winners and Thomas Zorbas added 8 points and 7 rebounds. Tunde Fasasi collected 16 points and 9 rebounds for Promitheas, Ioannis Kanavos added 11 points and 12 rebounds and Nikolaos Vasileiou scored 11 points.

Fasasi scored the first points of the game for Promitheas and Zorbas did the honors for Olympiacos. Veniamin Amposi’s three-point play gave Olympiacos its first lead, 5-3, before the lead switched hands five more times with Nikolaos Plotas scoring 5 points to help Promitheas go up 13-14 after 10 minutes. There were seven more lead changes to start the second quarter until a 10-3 Olympiacos surge for a 29-23 advantage. Promitheas fought back with the next 8 points and led 29-31 at halftime.

Olympiacos started the second half with the first seven points to pull ahead 36-31 before Promitheas answered with a 3-12 run for a 39-43 advantage. Olympiacos had the next four points to even the game 43-43 after 30 minutes. Promitheas kept Olympiacos scoreless for nearly 3 minutes to start the fourth quarter and moved ahead 43-49. Sarantos Sarantopoulos and Sprintzios hit three-pointers to help Olympiacos take a 53-51 lead. Promitheas followed with the next three points to start another back and forth of four lead changes as Spilopoulos hit a three-pointer for a 58-57 lead with 43 seconds to play. After a Promitheas turnover, Spilopoulos made one free throw and Ilias Kourepis and Kanavos both missed in the closing seconds to give Olympiacos the win.

Ben Saraf led NGP in scoring with 19 points, Konstantinos Lagos and Alexandros Samontourov both scored 15 points, Pacome Dadiet had 10 points and Peteris Pinnis added 6 points and 11 rebounds. Tunde Fasasi was the only Promitheas player to score in double figures with 11 points. The host team dropped to 0-2 in the tournament.

Lucas Fresno led the way with 23 points for the Italian side which reached the ANGT Championship Game in 2018. Matteo Visintin picked up 22 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals, Emmanuel Innocenti tallied 16 points, 5 assists and 6 steals and Fabrizio Pugliatti added 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. The second ticket for the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Finals will be decided between U18 Stellazzurra Rome and U18 Maccabi Tel Aviv as the two teams will battle it out Sunday in the ANGT Patras first place game. Both teams finished their respective group plays in undefeated fashion, with Maccabi surprising 2016 continental champion U18 FC Barcelona to grab the top spot in Group A. The other action Sunday has Barcelona facing U18 Next Generation Team Patras for third place; U18 ZPA Tbilisi playing U18 Helsinki Basketball Academy for fifth place; and U18 Olympiacos Piraeus taking on host side U18 Promitheas Patras for seventh place.

NGP finished Group B play with a 2-1 record and will take on U18 FC Barcelona on Sunday for third place in the event. Pacome Dadiet scored 27 points to lead the winners while Illan Pietrus had 25 points and 5 assists, Alexandros Samontourov collected 18 points, 11 rebounds and 3 blocks and Peteris Pinnis chipped in 11 points in the win. NGP Helsinki took the third spot in the group and will play against U18 ZPA Tbilisi on Sunday for fifth place. Miro Little poured in 37 points to go with 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 15 fouls drawn for a PIR of 30 for Helsinki. Dadiet opened the scoring for NGP with Vartiainen hitting four points at the other end. Dadiet added 10 more points and Pietrus had four and the selection team was up 22-13. Helsinki tried to stay close and trailed 27-18 after 10 minutes. Samontourov hit a three-pointer for NGP and the lead was 35-24. Helsinki was able to slow down NGP to just two points over the final 6 minutes of the first half and Yalaho had eight points and it was 37-35 at halftime.

The game was tight in the first half of the third quarter with Little converting a three-point play and Vartiainen hitting a three-pointer as Helsinki led 46-47. NGP turned up the defense though and Pinnis scored six points in a 14-2 run to lead 60-49, and it was 60-51 after 30 minutes. NGP increased the margin to 63-51 early in the fourth quarter, but Helsinki wasn’t done yet. Little scored eight points and Federiko nailed two three-pointers to get within 69-65 with under 4 minutes left. Federiko trimmed it to 71-69 and Little evened things 72-72 with 67 seconds to play. Dadiet split two free throws with 48 seconds and Pietrus made both with 18 seconds remaining and NGP up 75-72 only to see Federiko drain another triple with 8.6 seconds left.

The game went to overtime and the big shot making continued: Dadiet with a three-pointer and three-point play to give NGP an 86-81 lead; and a second three-pointer from Little and two free throws to even the game 88-88 with 7.9 seconds to play. NGP couldn’t score and it was time for a second overtime. Pietrus and Dadiet both hit triples and it was 98-96 when Mohamed Diawara stole the ball from Little, who then fouled out of the game with 58 seconds left. After Vartiainen made it 102-98, Erik Muhonen converted a three-point play and Pietrus hit just one of two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining for a 103-101 lead. Federiko drove to the rim and just missed a layup and the game was over.

Big second half keeps Stellazzurra undefeated

Stellazzurra, which had already before the game secured the top spot in Group B and an appearance in Sunday’s first place game, allowed just 18 points in the second half to move to 3-0. After Nikolaos Soilemetzidis opened the scoring for the host side, Stellazzurra reeled off the next 14 points - nine of them by Visintin - to lead 2-14. Promitheas was able to hold the Italian side to just two baskets in the final 5 minutes of the first quarter and got to within 14-18 after 10 minutes. A Vasileiou triple cut the gap to 17-20 only to see Pugliatti tally six points in a 3-12 surge to put Stellazzurra ahead 20-32. Promitheas fought back into the game and trailed just 31-34 at the break.

Plotas started the second half and pulled Promitheas within 33-34. Stellazzurra made sure it went into the first place game with momentum as it allowed just two baskets the rest of the quarter in a 5-23 run - including 15 points from Visintin and Emmanuel Innocenti. The lead was 38-57 after 30 minutes. The surge didn’t stop in the fourth quarter with a 2-10 run and Stellazzurra was able to give its leaders a break and reserves some playing time.

Iglesias picked up four more points and the Spanish side led 17-13. Maccabi finished the first quarter with a 1-6 spurt and led 18-19 after 10 minutes. Maccabi continued to score early in the second quarter but stepped up its defensive intensity and held Barcelona to just two points in the first nearly 6 minutes to creep 20-26. Iglesias added four more points to get Barcelona slowly going only to see Doron hit a three-pointer and Naveh convert a three-point play and Maccabi led 26-32 at the break.

The cushion swelled to double digits on Niv Avidan’s three-pointer to make it 26-37. Nessah countered with five points for Barcelona but Agmon and Doron both knocked down triples and the  margin grew to 35-50. Agmon and Doron each hit another three-pointer and the cushion was 40-62 with Maccabi up 47-65 after 30 minutes. Maccabi just did not let up and used the three-pointer some more with Omer Mayer and Menchel hitting from downtown and a 54-75 lead with 7 minutes left. Barcelona trimmed the gap to 12 points a couple of times but each time Maccabi came up with an answer - including Menchel stealing it from Iglesias and hitting a layup to make it 68-82 with 109 seconds left. Daniel Iruela hit a three-pointer with 41 seconds to cut the deficit to seven - 75-82 - but Maccabi punched right back with a fast break layup to decide the game for good.

After Sprintzios pushed the lead to 23-14, Meinarts scored 11 points and Tbilisi was within 30-29. Olympiacos responded with next eight points only to see Tbilisi score the final seven points of the first half to trail 38-36 at the break.

Tbilisi’s momentum continued with Meinarts and Aleksandre Mgeladze hitting three-pointers to pull ahead 40-44. Olympiacos stepped up its defense and long-range shooting as Veniamin Amposi hit two three-pointers and Sprintzios added one in a 13-0 run over nearly 4 minutes to pull ahead 53-44. Giorgi Ochkhikidze’s three-pointer stopped the drought and started a 4-13 close to the third quarter and the game was knotted 57-57. Sarantopoulos and Sprintzios both hit triples early in the final frame and Olympiacos was up 65-59. But the Greek side’s offense dried up and went scoreless for nearly 6 minutes and Alavidze scored six points in a 0-15 run for a 65-74 cushion with under 3 minutes to play. Olympiacos just could not get its shots to fall and Tbilisi made history.
