U18 PFYM INSEP Paris coasted its way into the Euroleague Basketball Adidas Next Generation Tournament Varese first place game by beating U18 ratiopharm Ulm 68-39 to finish the group stage undefeated. The two-time continental champion held Ulm to 11.8% three-point shooting and forced 29 turnovers for a 3-0 mark in Group B.
PFYM streaks past Ulm into first place game
PFYM on Sunday will play for a ticket to the ANGT Finals where it will join U18 ASVEL Villeurbanne and U18 Stellazzurra Rome, who finished first at the ANGT Belgrade and ANGT Patras, respectively. Rayan Rupert paced the winners with 14 points as the only player in double figures. Aurele Brena-Chemille had 9 points and 6 steals, Melvin Ajinca picked up 9 points and 6 rebounds and Mael Hamon Crespin added 8 points and 7 rebounds. Ulm dropped to 1-2 in the group despite Tobias Jensen and Lenny Liedtke both scoring 11 points and Jacob Ensminger tallying 4 points, 16 rebounds and 3 assists.
Hamon Crespin opened the scoring with a three-pointer and Jensen scored for Ulm. The French side wasted no time in taking control with a 13-0 run over more than 5 minutes to lead 16-2. Liedtke stopped the drought but PFYM held a 23-7 advantage after 10 minutes. Ulm needed nearly 4 minutes to score in the second quarter and was down 28-7 when Jensen scored. The French side did not let up with Hamon Crespin converting a three-point play and Rupert and Ajinca hitting triples for a 39-13 cushion. Ulm tried to just execute on offense but the score was 41-18 at the break.
Ulm picked up five straight points early in the second half to trim the deficit to 43-23 only to see PFYM reel off a 10-2 surge and the cushion was 53-25. And the former champion was up 55-27 after 30 minutes. Ulm managed to hold PFYM scoreless for nearly 3 minutes to start the fourth quarter but only cut the margin to 55-31. PFYM tallied the next nine points and the rout was complete.
