Zalgiris ended a four-game losing run in the EuroLeague by downing reigning champ Panathinaikos 84-77. The teams are now tied at 7-4 in a four-way share of fifth place. Zalgiris made an electric start for a double-digit lead midway through the first quarter and was up by 18 in the second, but Panathinaikos, with assistant coach Christos Serelis in charge instead of head coach Ergin Ataman, responded and it was 49-42 at the interval. The visitors kept pushing and briefly led in the third quarter, before Zalgiris found fresh resolve to pull clear again. Lonnie Walker led the way with 24 points, Deividas Sirvydis had 5 triples in his 19 points, and Sylvain Francisco scored 12. Kendrick Nunn paced Panathinaikos with 19 points, and Omer Yurtseven added 16.

Obst paced rampant Bayern with a career-high 34 points and Carsen Edwards provided perfect backup with 25, while Nick Weiler-Babb netted 14 and Devin Booker added 10 as Bayern extended its flawless home record this season in its brand-new arena, SAP Garden, to six wins. At the other end, Jabari Parker stood out for Barcelona with a career-best 26 points and Willy Hernangomez chipped in with 10, but the rest of the cast misfired from all over as the Spanish outfit’s star guard Kevin Punter endured a tough night, amassing a mere 7 points on 2-of-12 shooting from the floor.

One of the big surprises in the EuroLeague this season has been FC Bayern Basketball, but first-year head coach Gordie Herbert certainly has high hopes for his team.

One of the big surprises in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague this season has been [FC Bayern Munich](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-bayern-munich/mun/), but first-year head coach [Gordie Herbert](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/fc-bayern-munich/mun/herbert-gordon/) certainly has high hopes for his team.

Heading into a Round 11 clash with FC Barcelona this Friday night, Bayern has the joint second-best record in the EuroLeague at 7-3 – the same as the *Azulgrana* – and is a perfect 5-0 at its brand-new arena, SAP Garden.

“As a young coach, I always believed in strategies and Xs and Os. As I got older, I began to understand how important it is to build a winning culture,” Coach Herbert said in a EuroLeague feature interview.

“I believe a lot in having a vision. The vision is the German championship and to reach the Final Four in the EuroLeague. It’s not where we are or where we were, but where we want to go.”

The 65-year-old, who guided the German national team to the EuroBasket 2022 semifinals, its first-ever 2023 FIBA World Cup title and a fourth-placed finish at the 2024 Olympic Games, had not been seen on the EuroLeague benches since 2007-08, but he looks right at home once again.

“I was with Frankfurt in 2001 and it was the second year ever of the EuroLeague,” Herbert adds. “2007, 2008, I was with Pau-Orthez, Aris. Both times we reached the Top 16. The EuroLeague was much different. The EuroLeague is growing year after year after year. Right now it’s an unbelievable competition with so many great teams.”

With just under a third of the 2024-25 EuroLeague season in the books, Bayern is on course to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2021-22, but Herbert will know better than anyone that there is still a long way to go yet.

Aris adds Cooper to backcourt

Aris Midea Thessaloniki strengthened its perimeter by signing guard Sharife Cooper until the end of the season, the club announced Friday. Cooper (1.85 meters, 23 years old) arrives from the Turkish side Merkezefendi where he averaged 15.8 points, 6.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals this season.

For the young guard this is already his fourth professional season. Cooper played only 12 games in college at Auburn University, before splitting time between the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA and College Park SkyHawks in the G-League during his first pro campaign in the 2021-22. The next two seasons, Cooper played with the Cleveland Charge in the G-League, before finishing last season with Liaoning in China. He is now set to make his BKT EuroCup debut.

In 2011, he founded the Rimantas Kaukenas Charitable Foundation while he was still an active player. More than 13 years later, Kaukenas is now president of BKT EuroCup club [Wolves Twinsbet Vilnius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/wolves-twinsbet-vilnius/wol/) and his foundation is one of the biggest and most recognized in the Baltics.

His foundation is a nonprofit charity that provides help to seriously ill children, supporting families raising children with oncological, genetic and other critical diseases. From surprises involving basketball players, singers or athletes to activities in hospitals and many different sorts of events, the Rimantas Kaukenas Charitable Foundation makes sure it brings joy to the daily lives of seriously ill children. The result also ended Partizan’s eight-game skid against Zvezda in all competitions after playmaker [Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) led the visitors with 21 points and 6 boards, personifying a valiant team effort.

Jones, who was a novice to the Belgrade derby, much like the rest of Partizan’s completely overhauled team which finally looked the sum of its parts, was elated after the visitors silenced Zvezda’s boisterous 20,000 fans and gave their own 1,000 supporters lots to cheer about.

“Coming into the game we knew what was at stake and how big this rivalry is,” Jones told reporters after the contest, when asked by [Euroleague.net](http://euroleague.net) where they found the strength to defy the odds in an intimidating atmosphere.

“I definitely wanted to come here and get a win, especially after we’ve lost the last six games in the EuroLeague. That was the motivation – to get back on track and be ourselves.”

The livewire playmaker, who has been Partizan’s most consistent performer in a difficult start to the season, pointed out that he relished the challenge of being a team leader and also heaped praise on forward [Isiaha Mike](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/isiaha-mike/011836/), who made his first start since he recovered from injury to rack up 13 points and 4 boards.

“Yes, as point guard, they look at you to get them in the right spots and lead them at both ends of the floor,” Jones added. “Coach \[[Zeljko Obradovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/partizan-mozzart-bet-belgrade/par/obradovic-zeljko/?season=E2024)\] has talked to me multiple times about being the leader and accepting the role, so that’s what I’m going to do.

Jones struck a note of caution to his teammates that they had to keep their feet firmly on the ground if the win over Zvezda is to be a turning point in Partizan’s EuroLeague campaign and not just a flash in the pan. He also joked that Zvezda did itself no favors by allocating some tickets for Partizan’s fans, who were in full swing after seeing their team finally break the derby jinx.

“We have to stay on an even keel and approach every game the same way. We knew the history of the last few games in this fixture and we just wanted to get that done, not just for ourselves but also for the fans and especially the coach, who is a very special guy,” Jones stated.

“As for the fans, they made a mistake letting them in. Just how loud they were! I heard them the whole time and for us it was a good thing. To have somebody to cheer for you like that is extra motivation to get the win,” he added.

Coach Obradovic refused to get carried away as he looked serene and composed at the postgame press conference, having lauded Zvezda for allowing Partizan fans to attend the game. The Belgrade derby was played for a long time with no away fans present over fears of crowd trouble, and Obradovic hoped Zvezda’s gesture would turn the page in the relationship between the two rival sets of supporters.

“We talked to the players before the game as none of them had ever played in the derby before,” said Obradovic, who has won a record nine EuroLeague titles with five different clubs.

“They stayed focused throughout the game, illustrated by the fact that we had no turnovers in the first half. We now need to find some consistency, especially as we face some top teams in the upcoming games and we must keep our feet firmly on the ground. I want to thank our fans for turning up and also a big shout to Zvezda for making it possible, it was a great gesture and we want to return the favor in the reverse fixture.”

Obradovic’s counterpart [Ioannis Sfairopoulos](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/red/sfairopoulos-ioannis/) lambasted his team for lack of guile and took responsibility for the defeat, with his men looking flat ad bereft of ideas for the lion’s share of the contest.

"We headed into the game as favorites and that worked against us because we weren't mentally tough enough to handle the pressure," the Greek tactician lamented. "We knew Partizan had the athleticism to play strong and aggressive defense and we had no reply for their intensity. Partizan deserved to win and it’s my responsibility to find a way to win this type of game.

“We wanted to win this game so much and it backfired. We were too slow in our decision-making, although we expected an aggressive approach from their athletic outfit.”

Center [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/) was a solitary beacon of light for Zvezda as he sank a team-high 20 points to go with 8 boards, but he too was kicking himself in the teeth after a lackluster team display left a bitter taste and shifted the derby’s bragging rights to the black-and-white side of town.

“We weren’t combat ready and we just didn’t turn up at either end of the floor,” Petrusev said when asked by Euroleague.net why Zvezda looked so devoid of energy.

“It was as if they were the home team and not us, it was definitely our worst performance of the season. It’s like they wanted it more. They surprised us a few times by switching on defense, but it all came down to our lack of aggressiveness.

“It’s like we took victory in this derby for granted and perhaps we’re going to sober up now and realize that no one is going to roll over for us or give us anything on a silver platter. That’s the only positive we can take from this defeat."

Zvezda will have preciously little time to lament as it faces a tricky home game against FC Bayern Munich in Round 12, while Partizan will be relishing another blockbuster clash, on its home court this time, against the competition’s perennial heavyweights Olympiacos Piraeus.

It has been an interesting week for everyone at [AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/).

After [the club and Sasa Obradovic decided to mutually part ways](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/sasa-obradovic-sacked-as-monaco-basket/) on Monday, there was an emotional post on social media by [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/) dedicated to his former coach and an injury setback for [Furkan Korkmaz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/furkan-korkmaz/005763/). Hardly the ideal preparation heading into a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague clash against fellow French League side LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne.

The hangover from the last few days seemed to be on show in the first quarter at Salle Gaston Medecin on Thursday night, with ASVEL going 8-19 ahead and causing the usually calm crowd inside the arena to get a bit agitated. But then it was time for [Elie Okobo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elie-okobo/011212/) to remind his former team of his talent.

In the final 3:30 minutes of the first period, Okobo scored 10 points in a 12-6 Monaco run to make the score a bit more respectable at 20-25. Suddenly, interim head coach [Manuchar Markoishvili](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/markoishvili-manuchar/) could breathe a little easier.

Monaco held its own with ASVEL in the second quarter, with Okobo’s three-point play – a reverse layup and the and-one that followed – seeing the hosts tie the game at 34-34. That proved to be the French guard’s only score of the second frame, but he had another 7 in the third quarter as Monaco took control of the contest – it led 75-64 entering the fourth – and then a further 7 in the final period as [the hosts romped to a 103-92 victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/elie-okobo-matthew-strazel-monaco-fightback-asvel-103-92/).

Come the end of the game, Okobo had 27 points, his highest tally in 89 EuroLeague games for Monaco. In fact, the only time he bettered that mark in his 116-game EuroLeague career came during his rookie season in 2021-22 as [he netted 35 points for ASVEL in a 70-84 win at Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2021-22/panathinaikos-opap-athens-ldlc-asvel-villeurbanne/E2021/63/#boxscore) on October 29, 2021.

“We went through a lot the last couple of days, obviously,” Okobo told EuroLeague TV. “We lost Coach \[Obradovic\] and I think we needed to bounce back, regroup and find a way to get together again on the court, be happy for the next guy, play together and fight. I think that’s what we did overall. We did a great job staying locked in, even when they had their run. Defensively it was good, and offensively I think we were sharing the ball way more than usual.”

It was a great night for Okobo, but it was also a special night for Coach Markoishvili. One of Obradovic’s assistants since 2021, the Georgian – [who featured 126 times in the EuroLeague as a player](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/manuchar-markoishvili/bed/) across 10 seasons – experienced the emotional highs and lows that come with being a head coach in the EuroLeague on Thursday night. Afterward, he was delighted that he was able to see Monaco secure the win.

“There is nothing to analyze, the guys did an amazing job, amazing effort. All the credit to them,” Coach Markoishvili said. “They were really locked in and concentrated. They knew what they had to do and they followed \[the game plan\]. They played together, they involved the crowd, which is very important for the future for us.

“I’m really happy that today I had this opportunity. Probably this is a day that I will never forget… not probably, 100%. All the credit again to my players, to the crowd, who all game long were with us.”

Understandably, once it became public knowledge that Markoishvili would be taking charge of Monaco for this Round 11 clash against ASVEL, the 38-year-old was inundated with messages. But for those who he did not reply to, he had a special message: “One second, can I say something? Hey, I got a million messages these days and I never responded. So, guys, don’t be mad. Thank you very much for the support.”

For the 7-4 Monaco, next up is a trip to face the reigning EuroLeague champion in Panathinaikos at OAKA. It remains unclear if Coach Markoishvili will be on the bench for that game, but regardless, Monaco heads into that Round 12 clash after winning back-to-back games in the EuroLeague for just the second time this season. 

Even if Monaco has had an up and down start to the campaign, the team's talent is undeniable, as Okobo reminded everyone in Round 11 against ASVEL.

ALBA's always impressive ball circulation allowed the visitors to find a lot of open shots, especially in the opening 15 minutes. [Tim Schneider](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tim-schneider/006251/) buried a three-pointer that gave ALBA a double-digit lead, 26-37, early in the second quarter. 

At halftime, ALBA had 15 assists and just 6 turnovers, having made 9 of 16 three-pointers (56.3% 3FG), which was on track to break the club record of 17 shots from downtown against both [Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/game-center/2020-21/valencia-basket-alba-berlin/E2020/104/) and [Khimki Moscow Region](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/game-center/2020-21/khimki-moscow-region-alba-berlin/E2020/248/#boxscore) in the 2020-21 campaign.

Real was outrebounded 13-14 in the first half with fewer assists (14) and more turnovers (7) than its opponent. Thanks to its shooting accuracy (70.6% 2FG, 46.2% 3FG), *Los Blancos* was able to tie the game, 55-55, at halftime. Things were very different after the break, as Real raised its intensity to take full control of the game.

"Coach talked to us at halftime. He told us we had to play better defense, aggressive defense with hustle. And after that, we ran the floor," Real point guard [Facu Campazzo ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/)said after the game. "When we play good defense, we are really good on offense. I think in the third quarter we did a great job of that."

Campazzo gets double-double in less than 20 minutes

ALBA was limited to 29 second-half points on just 3-of-11 three-point shooting (27.2% 3FG). It had just 7 assists and 11 turnovers after the break. On the other hand, Real had 12 assists and 10 turnovers. The hosts kept shooting the ball well to finish the game with 20-of-29 on two-pointers (69.0%) and 12-of-25 on three-pointers (48.0%).

Campazzo made the difference with an outstanding third quarter in which he had 6 points and 3 assists for a PIR of 13. In less than 20 minutes on the floor, Campazzo finished the game with a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists. It was his first double-double this season and the 14th in his career, all with points and assists. Real finished the game with six scorers in double digits, led by [Xavier Rathan-Mayes](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/xavier-rathan-mayes/013378/) with a career-high 16 points.

"What you have seen in the start of the third is what we need to do coming out of the game. When we are able to be really good defensively, get stops, get out and run in transition, we have a bunch of ballhandlers that put a lot of pressure on opposing defenses, but it starts with stops," Rathan-Mayes said. "Coach came into the locker room, got into us a little bit, and it translated into a really good start to the third quarter. And that's what we need to continue."

Fellow summer signing [Evan Fournier](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/evan-fournier/013380/) calmed any potential nerves among the Reds' fan base by producing a complete performance on both sides of the court and leading the Greeks to [a 92-69 victory over Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/olympiacos-stays-hot-to-roast-baskonia-92-69/). 

Vezenkov missed out on the Round 11 clash in Piraeus due to injury, meaning that Olympiacos had to do without the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague’s second-top scorer (18.5 ppg.). Yet, Fournier hit the ground running on Thursday night and netted 8 of Olympiacos’s first 10 points of the game to pave the way for the hosts.

Two quick fouls from [Thomas Walkup](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/thomas-walkup/008855/) on [Markus Howard](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/markus-howard/011948/) forced coach Georgios Bartzokas to bench his starting point guard just 4 minutes into the game. That's when Fournier picked up the playmaking baton, dishing 5 assists to go with his 15 points in the first half. The 32-year-old forward came close to completing a double-double as he finished the game with a career-high 9 assists.

Fournier thrived on both ends, recording as many as 3 steals, 1 block and 0 turnovers in less than 27 minutes for a career-high PIR of 24. Having pulled off a complete outing on the court, the France international earned plaudits from Bartzokas, who needed just 11 words to praise his player after the final whistle. "He is a hell of a player, what can I say?" the Olympiacos boss told EuroLeague TV.

The 12-year NBA veteran has recorded double digits in scoring in seven of his last eight games. In fact, he has scored at least 15 points in seven games so far this season, demonstrating that he has needed just a short period to adapt to his new team. 

"I’m loving it every day \[at Olympiacos\]," Fournier said after the game. "It’s a privilege and pleasure to play in front of these fans, play for coach Bartzokas, play with these guys. Guys can see I’m having fun out there. Let’s keep winning, man."

Next week, Olympiacos will travel to Serbia, where it will face a Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade side coming off a morale-boosting victory in the derby against Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. Vezenkov might be a major doubt ahead of the Round 12 clash in Belgrade, but Bartzokas is aware that in Fournier, he has a player he can lean on.

Playmaker Carlik Jones was the star of the show and center Tyrique Jones delivered too as KK Partizan upended KK Crvena zvezda 77-89.

Belgrade derby was all about the Joneses

Games the stature of the Belgrade Derby often require experienced players to stand tall.

And so, two EuroLeague rookies and a second-year player did much of the damage as coach Zejko Obradovic’s [Partizan upended Zvezda 77-89](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/partizan-outshines-zvezda-77-89-in-belgrade-derby/).

Playmaker [Carlik Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/carlik-jones/013369/) was the star of the show with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, while center [Tyrique Jones](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/tyrique-jones/011981/) delivered 12 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. [Isiaha Mike](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/isiaha-mike/011836/), making his third EuroLeague appearance and third start, contributed 13 points. One of those three seemed to be involved in almost every key or spectacular play on Thursday.

The Joneses came up clutch for Partizan in the derby

Zvezda led early and into the second quarter, which is when Carlik Jones took charge. With the score 31-27, the point guard scored 6 straight points to trigger a 1-12 run, during which Mike threw down a monster slam and Tyrique Jones wowed with a block off the backboard. Their combined efforts saw Partizan take a 39-35 cushion into halftime.

Mike scored 7 more points in the third quarter as Partizan took a double-digit lead, but there was cause for concern when Tyrique Jones left the court with a non-contact injury late in the quarter. The scare proved for naught as the big man took the floor to open the fourth quarter. And then took control.

Tyrique Jones stole the ball and dunked on Zvezda’s first possession. He got another steal on the next possession. And scored another basket soon after. He then corralled a contested defensive rebound and drew a foul from Zvezda’s [Filip Petrusev](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/filip-petrusev/011194/). And if that onslaught didn’t kill Zvezda’s spirits, Carlik Jones’s impressive three-point play with 4:10 left that made it 63-78 all but did.

Coach Obradovic was pleased with the play of his entire team, though he singled out the efforts of a few, including Carlik Jones, at the postgame press conference.

"He has the traits of a leader and we know what he can do on the court. He has that in him and stands out among this group of players, but the important thing is that his teammates trust him and accept his leadership," Obradovic said of Carlik Jones. "He was really good tonight despite the fact that he didn't have a great shooting night from downtown."

Indeed, Carlik Jones missed all 5 of his tried from deep, but he more than made up for that by drawing 6 fouls and making 9 free throws without a miss in compiling a game-high PIR of 27.

Partizan knew that to beat Zvezda, it would need strong efforts from players like Carlik Jones, who though new to the EuroLeague has shined on the international stage before with the South Sudan national team, and from Tyrique Jones, who is in his second EuroLeague season. But regarding Mike, who had yet to score all season and hadn’t played since Round 7, there had to be question marks. Not, however, for Obradovic.

"He's only recovered recently from injury as healing is a time-consuming process. We had to be patient because he was going to be our starting power forward and then he got injured. He was excellent tonight and we are glad that he returned with such a good performance," Obradovic said of Mike.

That trust and belief in those players was key to Partizan winning the derby, which just may end up as a defining moment in the season. If Partizan, which had lost six in a row before this, can get back on track and challenge for a playoff spot, soon other teams will be asking themselves if they can keep up with the Joneses.
