[Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/hapoel-bank-yahav-jerusalem/jer/) survived [a hard fight against BKT EuroCup runner-up Cosea JL Bourg-en-Bresse](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/jerusalem-used-big-second-half-to-beat-bourg-86-77/) at Samokov Arena on Wednesday night. Both teams entered the game with 5-2 records, and a win would confirm second place in Group B for one of them.

It seemed Bourg was in good disposition of achieving it, as it dominated 37-41 at halftime, but a fierce reaction after the intermission with a 21-8 run in the 6 first minutes of the third period turned the tables and set the foundations for a valuable and well-deserved victory.

“We elevated our aggressiveness in the third quarter," explained Hapoel head coach Yonatan Alon. “Second quarter was we already better, but we were aggressive defensively and offensively.”

But besides mentioning team effort, Yalon had some words for a couple of players who took turns in the spotlight despite a non-starring role in previous games.

“I think we have a very talented team. People don't understand how talented players like [\[Gabriel\] Chachashvili](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/gabriel-chachashvili/013279/) and [\[Or\] Cornelius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/or-cornelius/013281/) really are.”, he said. “They can give us a lot and I don't want them to look at [Jared Harper](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/jared-harper/011970/) and [Khadeen Carrington](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/khadeen-carrington/008912/) and ask them to score for us. No, we have every time on the floor five talented players, and they need to perform and to believe in themselves”

Chachashvili’s magic night boosted Hapoel over Bourg

Speaking specifically about Chachashvili, the truth is that he seemed to believe in himself more than anyone, anytime. The 24-year-old center was among the top talents of his generation in Israel and signed with Jerusalem in the summer of 2023 after a season in Germany with high expectations. However, injuries cost him to miss most of the season and the start of this one. But then, when Jerusalem lost [Austin Wiley](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/austin-wiley/013278/) and [Justin Smith](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/justin-smith/013276/) to injuries, the opportunity was there for Chachashvili.

He enjoyed good playing minutes this season, averaging 5.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 5.6 PIR in 18:21 minutes on the court, but had never scored more than 7 points, grabbed more than 6 boards or recorded more than 8 PIR in any of his 7 games in his debut season.

He first showed up in the second quarter, scoring 8 of Jerusalem's last 10 points before halftime, and played a major role in his team’s reaction early in the third period with 6 more points and key rebounds and steals to construct a double-digit lead, 72-59, that proved definitive.

“We talked at halftime. We said that we really wanted to pick up the aggressiveness on defense and get more stops, and play a little bit more simple on offense”, Chachashvili said. “And I think we did both of those things. Everybody had a really good game. \[…\] Everybody did their part to beat such a good team."

With Chachashvili looking strong and Derek Ogbeide adding more power with 6 points and 7 rebounds in less than 13 minutes in his second game with the club, Jerusalem has plenty of reasons for optimism.

Simpson led Cluj to a 100-93 home win over 7Bet-Lietkabelis Panevezys with 32 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. He made 7 of 11 two-pointers, 2 of 4 three-pointers and 12 of 13 free throws and drew 9 fouls to compile a PIR of 34, which was the highest of any player in Round 8. Simpson is the first Cluj player to earn MVP of the Round honors this season and the third in competition history after Karel Guzman and Emanuel Cate.

[Devon Dotson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/devon-durrell-dotson/013285/) of Joventut Badalona had the round's next-highest PIR with a 32 in his team's 78-72 home win over Buducnost VOLI Podgorica. Dotson led Joventut with 26 points on 7-of-10 two-point shooting, 3-of-4 on three-pointers and 3-of-3 on free throws, plus 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block and 6 fouls drawn.

Jerusalem point guard Harper dished 9 assists, more than anyone in Round 8. Simpson is the EuroCup's assist leader with 6.9 per game.

Joventut Badalona had to battle until the final minute to beat Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 78-72 at home in Round 8. Newcomer Sam Dekker showed hints of his great talent, too. 


Sam Dekker stepped up for Joventut in his first game 

[Joventut Badalona](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/joventut-badalona/roster/jov/) had to battle until the final minute to beat [Buducnost VOLI Podgorica ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/buducnost-voli-podgorica/roster/bud/)[78-72 at home in Round 8](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/dotson-leads-joventut-past-buducnost-78-72/) in a game that saw newcomer [Sam Dekker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/sam-dekker/009672/) flash hints of his great talent, too. 

Dekker had not played an official basketball game since winning the British League title with the London Lions. His contract is still being honored by the Lions, but Dekker cannot play in the British League due to budget restrictions. Joventut saw an opportunity and signed him. Dekker was a [2022-23 All-EuroCup Second Team](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/ec-2022-23-all-eurocup-second-team/) selection and helped London reach the EuroCup semifinals last season.

Despite being a little out of rhythm, Dekker knows the competition well and his talent did the rest. He did not have spectacular numbers, finishing the game with 7 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a PIR of 3, but Dekker stepped up in two critical moments during the game. When [Devon Dotson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/devon-durrell-dotson/013285/) briefly left the game with a small injury, Dekker had 4 points which allowed Joventut to keep a 61-60 lead after 30 minutes.

And when Buducnost completed its comeback, 70-72, with over 2 minutes remaining, Joventut needed a go-to guy, as Buducnost had limited the hosts to just 2 points in the previous 5 minutes. After a timeout, [Guillem Vives](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/guillem-vives/002361/) found Dekker for the go-ahead three-pointer from the left corner. After a defensive stop, [Adam Hanga](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/adam-hanga/005099/) also struck from downtown to put Joventut on the right track, 76-72. Defense did the rest, as Buducnost was held scoreless in the last 2 minutes.

Sam Dekker started his fourth BKT EuroCup season. Joventut Badalona is his third team in the competition.

Dotson had been sensational before his injury, and still finished the game with career-highs of 26 points and a PIR of 32. He had 23 of those points in the opening 23 minutes before getting injured on his first missed shot, but was able to come back and help his team win.

"A great win today. We emphasized before the game to come out with a lot of energy and a lot of motivation. In the past games, we have played tight, every game has been really close," Dotson said after the game. "Today, we wanted to change that and really finish the game and just get this win. It was a great victory. I am glad the team played well and helped me, uplifted me to play well, also."

Head coach [Dani Miret](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/joventut-badalona/jov/miret-daniel/) took in some fresh air once his team broke a four-game losing streak in the competition. He believes that enjoying themselves playing good basketball is the next step for the team after the upcoming break.

"I think that in other games, we deserved victories because we are worrying and putting all the effort, making a lot of solid things. Right now, this victory will help us shine a little bit more because when we are competing, we are nor enjoying what we need to enjoy," Coach Miret said. "We are doing the job but good basketball teams also enjoy. It is easy when you are winning and this is what the team needs right now, have confidence, start to enjoy playing with each other. It is a great victory for the team."

Having had the dubious honor of making 0 of 20 shots from deep between them in the first half, the two sides produced better and more entertaining basketball in the second, with Reyer ultimately prevailing thanks to racking up a staggering 50 rebounds and dishing out 24 assists.

The home team’s head coach [Neven Spahija](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/umana-reyer-venice/vnc/spahija-neven/) heaped praise on his men after the game, as Reyer rekindled its post-season hopes by improving to 3-5 while Turk Telekom slipped to 4-4.

“Today we won the game with defense as we had very poor shooting percentages, but at least we hit 3 threes in the second half and we totaled 50 rebounds, which I haven’t seen in a long time,” Spahija said in his post-game comments. “Winning always makes good chemistry and positive vibes for the future.

“We need to have better shooting percentages but when it doesn’t work you need to play defense and that’s what we did. Congratulations to the players for an amazing effort, we kept a team like Turk Telekom down to just 67 points.”

Reyer finished on a mere 3-of-21 from downtown but restricted Turk Telekom to 4-of-19, while the Italian side also allowed its rival only 21 boards and just 12 assists.

It was a game of two different halves as the opening period was played almost at a walking pace and produced a catalog of errors, while the contest came to life in the second thanks to improved offense from both teams.

Rodney McGruder paced Reyer with 20 points and 6 boards, Kyle Wiltjer added 16 points while Mfiondu Kabengele racked up 10 points and 15 rebounds, as the hosts dominated the boards with their physical approach at both ends.

Anthony Brown netted 18 points and Braian Angola chipped in with 16 for Turk Telekom, whose support cast fell woefully short much to the anguish of had coach Erdem Can, whose constant pleas during time outs for a more energetic display from his men seem to have fallen on deaf ears.

The rivals combined for 0-of-20 shooting from downtown in the first half, with Reyer missing 12 shots from three-point range and Turk Telekom 8, as both teams struggled from all over the court. Despite being ice cold from deep, Reyer was 30-24 ahead at halftime as it restricted Turk Telekom to a mere 3 assists while the home team had 8.

It was as if two different teams stepped out on the court after the break as Brown knocked down the opening two triples of the game and all of a sudden the visitors nosed ahead 34-36, but their joy was short-lived.

Reyer hit back with a 19-4 run to turn the tide for good and headed into the final 10 minutes of the contest with a 55-46 advantage at the end of the third quarter, with McGruder doing damage from all over.

Turk Telekom slashed the deficit to 68-66 late in the fourth as the Turkish side beefed up its defense in an effort to force the final twist, but Reyer held firm when the chips were down and sealed its victory with a 7-0 run in the home stretch.

Joventut Badalona snapped a four-game losing streak in Group A by beating Buducnost VOLI Podgorica 78-72 at home in Round 8 on Wednesday. 

Both teams now have 3-5 records in Group A. Devon Dotson led the winners with 26 points and Adam Hanga added 13 for Joventut. McKinley Wright and Rasheed Sulaimon paced Buducnost with 12 points apiece.

Dotson got Joventut going with a layup and a floater. He soon followed Ante Tomic's jumper with a driving layup that caused Buducnost to call a timeout at 8-0. Kenan Kamenjas stepped up with a layup that a red-hot Dotson bettered with a bomb from downtown. Yogi Ferrell answered from beyond the arc and found Kamenjas for a layup that got Buducnost closer, 11-7. After Artem Pustovyi hit a mid-range jumper, Kamenjas and Nikola Tanaskovic got the visitors even closer, 13-12. Dotson followed a triple with a three-point play, but Sulaimon hit a floater and a bomb from downtown for a 19-18 score. Wright nailed a jumper to give Buducnost its first lead, 19-20, after 10 minutes.

Tomic scored down low early in the second quarter and Dotson added a three-pointer for a 24-21 Joventut lead. Yannick Kraag sank a floater in transition, Djordje Jovanovic answered from downtown and Pep Busquets's put-back layup kept Joventut in charge, 28-24. Pustovyi scored down low and erased Juwan Morgan's jumper with a jump hook. Wright stepped up with back-to-back three-point plays that tied it at 32-32. Kraag scored again, Hanga added a three-pointer and Tomic's jump hook gave his team a 40-34 lead. Aleksa Ilic beat the buzzer with a tip-in that fixed the halftime score at 40-36.

Hanga fired in his trademark corner triple right after the break and Dotson improved Andrija Slavkovic's put-back layup with a three-point play. Tanaskovic scored down low and Ferrell hit a jumper. Dotson hit a stop-and-pop shot, Alen Omic matched that with a layup and Ferrell downed a fadeaway jumper that brought Buducnost within 48-47. Kassius Robertson dunked off a steal and struck from beyond the arc to give Joventut fresh air at 53-47. Fletcher Magee found his first points, Guillem Vives and Sulaimon traded triples and Sam Dekker restored a 60-54 Joventut lead. Magee buried a deep three-pointer, getting help from Wright and Morgan to bring the visitors within 61-60 after 30 minutes.

Tomic buried another jump hook early in the fourth quarter. Dotson took over with a three-point play and Hanga added a reverse layup that prompted Buducnost to call timeout at 68-60. Magee sank a corner triple which Slavkovic followed with a put-back layup. Omic scored in the paint, Sulaimon downed a three-pointer and found Morgan for an alley-oop layup that put Buducnost on top, 70-72, with over 2 minutes left. Dekker buried a three-pointer and Hanga also struck from beyond the arc for a 76-72 score. Robertson sealed the outcome from the foul line.

Unsung Marko Simonovic stepped up with big fourth quarter for Bahcesehir

[Bahcesehir College Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/teams/bahcesehir-college-istanbul/roster/bah/?season=2024-25) has been taking the BKT EuroCup by storm this season with a roster stacked with EuroLeague-level players receiving loads of attention. [Marko Simonovic](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/marko-simonovic/012711/) hasn’t been talked about much despite a strong season, and he stepped up big in the fourth quarter of a [hard-fought victory](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/news/bahcesehir-comes-up-with-big-plays-to-fight-past-ulm-grab-fifth-straight-victory/). 

Bahcesehir never was able to put away [ratiopharm Ulm](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/teams/ratiopharm-ulm/roster/ulm/?season=2024-25) but used a solid fourth quarter to keep the hosts at bay in a 72-80 road win for a fifth straight victory and a 7-1 record atop Group A. 

"In the fourth quarter, we really played smart. Throughout the game, we had some good moments but then we had terrible moments,” said [Mateusz Ponitka](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/mateusz-ponitka/004172/), who tallied 12 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. 

Ponitka was one of four players to score in double figures. [Sehmus Hazer](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/sehmus-hazer/011201/) poured in 20 points and [Tai Odiase ](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/tai-odiase/011823/)added 14 points including a couple of massive dunks. 

Still, it was the unsung Simonovic who led the team in scoring in the fourth quarter with 9 of his 11 points. He started with 2 free throws and then knocked down a triple, which turned a tie game into a 7-point lead. The 25-year-old added a push shot in the lane and a reverse layup to keep Bahcesehir up 66-71. 

The Montenegro big man then showed up on defense, grabbing big defensive rebounds with 105 and 67 seconds remaining - both times after Ulm had snatched offensive rebounds but failed to convert. He finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Marko Simonovic left his mark in Ulm

Simonovic played the first half of last season in the EuroLeague with[ Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/crvena-zvezda-meridianbet-belgrade/statistics/red/?season=2023-24&phase=All%20phases) before moving to the EuroCup in January 2024 and joining Besiktas Istanbul.

The 2.13-meter center also stood out for the Montenegro national team at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and FIBA EuroBasket 2022. Still, he has not been noticed much this season with all the other star talent on Bahcesehir’s roster.

But Simonovic definitely deserves some love as he has now scored in double figures in seven of the team’s eight EuroCup games, averaging 11.6 points per game. He is also shooting 43.5% on three-pointers to go with 82.9% from the foul line as well as 4.6 rebounds.

The guests battled until the very end, however, rallying from a 27-point third-quarter deficit. 

In fact, Lietkabelis set a new record for most points in any quarter in EuroCup history, 42. [Oleksandr Kovliar](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/oleksandr-kovliar/013247/) was the catalyst of this record, scoring all of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. [Mantas Rubstavicius](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/eurocup/players/mantas-rubstavicius/009299/) also had 11 points in the fourth quarter and [Georgios Kalaitzakis](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/eurocup/players/georgios-kalaitzakis/006586/) added 9 in the final 3 minutes. Lietkabelis trailed 76-51 at the end of the third quarter.

Unicaja Malaga and Cosea JL Bourg en Bresse shared the previous record with 41 points apiece. Lietkabelis head coach Nenad Canak could not see his team's record in the sidelines, as he was ejected late in the third quarter.

"I mean, this is basketball," Cluj head coach Mihai Silvasan said after the game. "We know that they never give up and they came back. 

"We relaxed a little in the fourth quarter. We only allowed 42 points because of our mindset. We thought that the game is over 5-7 minutes before the end. 

"So that almost cost us, but a win is a win. We are 4-4 and move forward. We took another win in the EuroCup. We are there in a playoff spot, so that's good for us."

Simpson was also wary of Lietkabelis's threat, but is happy that his team came out on top.

"We knew that going into halftime. They have some good players, some guys that can shoot. They executed well, so we knew they were going to come back," Simpson said. "And obviously, it came close to doing what we wanted. But at the same time, we are just grateful that we're able to get the dub."

He finished the game with 32 points, hitting 7 of 11 two-pointers, 2 of 4 three-pointers and 12 of 13 free throws.

Simpson sets club record in Round 8

As for Cluj, Simpson was once again at the center of it all.

Simpson several club records against Lietkabelis. He finished the game with 32 points, hitting 7-of-11 two-pointers, 2-of-4 three-pointers and 12-of-13 free throws. He is the first Cluj player to score 30 or more points in a BKT EuroCup game. He already had the club's previous scoring record with 28 points against Veolia Towers Hamburg earlier this season.

Simpson was also close to his team's PIR record, which belongs to Emanuel Cate with 38. In addition, he amassed a PIR of 34, a new personal best.

"I just came out just hot and my teammates trusted me. But most importantly, I'm just happy we got the dub before we go on this little break and hopefully, this dub can get us some momentum to keep rolling," Simpson added.

Bahcesehir College Istanbul remained in sole possession of first place in Group A as it fought past ratiopharm Ulm 72-80 on the road for a fifth straight victory.  The Turkish team decided the game with bigger plays down the stretch to improve to 7-1 heading into the national team break.

Sehmus Hazer paced Bahcesehir with 20 points, 5 assists and 4 steals, Tai Odiase scored 14 points, Mateusz Ponitka flirted with a triple-double in collecting 12 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists and Marko Simonovic added 11 points and 5 rebounds.

Ulm dropped to 4-4 with its first home loss of the season and fourth defeat in the last five games. Alfonso Plummer drained 4 three-pointers in scoring 18 points while Justinian Jessup had 13 points and Ben Saraf chipped in 10 points and 4 assists. 

The first quarter was not very high scoring with Ulm’s Karim Jallow and Hazer both netting 4 points as the hosts led 9-7. Bahcesehir temporarily took the lead, but then was held scoreless for nearly 3 minutes as Noa Essengue scored 5 points to help Ulm pull ahead 16-10. The score was 16-13 after 10 minutes.

Bahcesehir trimmed the gap to 16-15 to start the second quarter only to see Philipp Herkenhoff drain 2 triples and Plummer also hit from deep to push Ulm ahead 25-17. Ponitka started taking over for the visitors with 7 points to get the game even at 30-30. Hazer tallied 4 points as Bahcesehir finished the first half stronger to lead 36-41 at the break.

Hazer scored 4 quick points early in the second half to give Bahcesehir its biggest lead of the game, 38-45. Jessup had 4 points at the other end but the home side could not get the gap closer than 5 points before Bahcesehir led 45-52. Another Plummer triple got the home side to within 52-54 and it was 52-56 after 30 minutes.

Ulm tied the game again 58-58 after yet another three-pointer from Plummer and Marcio Santos’s three-point play. Simonovic began taking over with 7 points as Bahcesehir went up 62-69. Ulm three times managed to get the deficit to 3 points but the visitors showed their big-game experience with Jaleen Smith hitting a big layup for a 70-77 lead with 89 seconds to go. 

The final set of games before a mid-season break will provide plenty of motivation for teams across the continent to triumph in Round 8 of the BKT EuroCup.

Zavier Simpson led the winners with a club record 32 points plus 5 assists and Zach Hankins added 15 points. Mantas Rubstavicius paced Lietkabelis with 25 points.

The hosts entered the fourth quarter with a 4-point lead, but Gran Canaria used a 0-12 run to take a 61-69 lead, which it preserved down the stretch. Caleb Homesley led the winners with 17 points and John Shurna had 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jonah Mathews scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half in defeat.

Hapoel trailed 37-41 at halftime, but outscored its opponent 21-8 in the 6 first minutes of the third period to take control of the game and never look back. Bourg, which missed top scorer Xavier Castaneda, dropped to 5-3. Gabi Chachasvili led the winners with a monster double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds for a career-high PIR of 29. Jordan Usher was the game's top-scorer with 22 points for Bourg.

Wolves registered their fifth consecutive victory by beating visiting Trento on Tuesday night. The win improved Wolves' record to 5-3 in Group A, while Trento dropped to 3-5, remaining winless in our road games. Andrew Andrews scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half, including making 6 three-point shots. Four of his triples came in a 19-5 run bridging the third and fourth quarters, which turned a 53-59 deficit into a 72-64 lead, and the hosts never trailed again. Eigirdas Zukauskas scored 21 for Trento.

Brae Ivey paced Hamburg with 15 points and Keondre Kennedy netted 14 and Kur Kuath had 6 points, 12 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks in the winning effort. Vassilis Toliopoulos netted 31 points on 6-for-18 three-point shooting in the loss.

The key in the victory was the third quarter in which Valencia outscored Cedevita 31-10. Valencia had seven scorers in double figures, with Josep Puerto leading the way with 15 and Xabi Lopez-Arostegui adding 14. Devin Robinson netted 16 points for the visitors.
