On Friday night, though, [Valencia Basket](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/valencia-basket/pam/) playmaker [Darius Thompson](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/darius-thompson/011078/) eclipsed that galaxy of stars with a fabulous multifaceted performance, guiding his team to an eyebrow-raising 79-89 road victory, ending Panathinaikos’s four-game winning run and sending *Los Taronjas* into a share of second place in the standings.

Thompson, in his first season with Valencia after earlier stints with Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz and Anadolu Efes Istanbul, dazzled in Athens by combining 19 points, 6 assists, 8 rebounds and 2 steals for a PIR of 28.

Outshining his heralded opponents was certainly not an easy task, and the early stages suggested that Panathinaikos would enjoy another successful evening courtesy of its own backcourt talent: Sloukas, Grant and Shorts all had 3 assists before the midway point in the second quarter, during which time Nunn had predictably become the game’s first double-digit scorer.

But Valencia stayed in the game through long-range shooting, with 10 different players attempting no less than 21 three-pointers before halftime. The Spanish team’s accuracy was, however, more miss than hit with plenty of open looks missed, allowing Panathinaikos to stay in front and restricting Pedro Martinez’s men to just 38 first-half points.

But there was little deviance from that strategy in the second half, with a three-point strike from Thompson featuring in a 9-0 run which took the *Taronjas* into the lead – an advantage that was protected in the last second of the end of the third period when [Kam Taylor](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/kameron-taylor/011217/) beat the buzzer to strike his third triple of the evening.

Another burst of three-point shooting, with conversions by [Nate Reuvers](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/reuvers-nathan/012738/) and the ever-dangerous Taylor, saw the visitors' lead stretch as high as 10 points, 65-75, early in the fourth. But there was still plenty of time on the clock. As the atmosphere intensified, Grant’s spectacular save on the baseline, setting up Shorts for a three-pointer, helped the Greens fight back to a single-score deficit, 74-77, with still four minutes remaining.

That, though, was the signal for Thompson to provide the exclamation mark on his special performance, delivering not only the game’s defining moment but also its most spectacular: receiving a pass from [Omari Moore](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/omari-moore/014115/) in full stride just inside the three-point arc, Thompson took off and exploded all over the defense of [Juancho Hernangomez](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/juancho-hernangomez/012712/) to detonate a brutal right-handed slam, achieving the ultimate Athens accolade of silencing the usually raucous home fans.

It was surely one of the dunks of the season, and also a moment to suck the air out of a Panathinaikos team which never looked like recovering. Indeed, Valencia was even able to increase its lead in the final minutes, appropriately finishing the game with another score from Thompson to seal a double-digit final margin.

The 30-year-old guard was understated in his post-game reaction, preferring to let his action speak louder than words as he told EuroLeague TV: “I’m glad we got the win, that’s all that matters to me. We tried to play with as much energy as possible, and we found a way to come out with the win.”

Triumphant coach Martinez, however, was much more effusive after watching his team prove that its outstanding form at the new Roig Arena – with a 6-1 home record – can be matched by hard-earned victories against top-class opponents on the road.

“We played like we wanted to in practice: with rhythm, with short rotations and the players understanding perfectly that our moment has to arrive if we play hard and with passion,” Martinez enthused. “Our third quarter was magnificent – our pace, our mentality in defense, our activity… it was great.”

Reflecting on the qualities that make Valencia such a difficult opponent, Martinez did not shy away from talking up his team’s chances of further success as the season unfolds.

“We have good players, we have a good mentality, and I think our day-by-day \[work\] is good enough to be competitive in a great competition,” he said. “We have to play against great teams, like today – Panathinaikos, for me, is one of the top two or three teams of the competition. But with our mentality we can be competitive against everybody.”

And on Friday night, nobody embodied that mentality more than Darius Thompson.

It is Barcelona’s fifth triumph on the road this season and its first away from home under head coach Xavi Pascual, as the team improved to 9-5 record, the same as Zvezda, which saw its seven-game home-court winning streak snapped. The only time Barcelona trailed was when the hosts scored the opening basket, but Barcelona quickly built a double-digit lead behind Will Clyburn. The hosts repeatedly rallied throughout the night and tied the game on several occasions, but never took the lead. 

Dario Brizuela played a key role for the winners, scoring 14 of his 17 points late in the third and in the fourth quarter. Clyburn finished with 22 points, scoring 20 in the first half, while Toko Shengelia had 15 and Kevin Punter poured in 14 points. Codi Miller-McIntyre scored 19 points for Zvezda, and Chima Moneke collected 15 points and 9 rebounds in a losing effort.

Valencia stunned Panathinaikos with a statement-making road win, 79-89, to claim a share of second place in the standings. A first quarter of momentum changes ended with Panathinaikos ahead, 22-19, and the second period was similar as runs were traded before the interval arrived with the host still leading, 44-38. But Valencia started the second half with a 0-9 run, and stayed in front heading into the last ten minutes, 61-65. Another flurry of scoring gave the visitors a double-digit lead early in the fourth, before defense took over to seal an impressive win.

Darius Thompson powered Valencia with a remarkable combination of 19 points, 6 assists and 8 rebounds, while Kameron Taylor hit 4 triples in his 18 points and Brancou Badio made a trio of three-balls for 12. Kendrick Nunn paced Panathinaikos with 23 points, TJ Shorts added 19, and Kostas Sloukas and Dinos Mitoglou both scored 12. The outcome leaves both teams tied in a share for second place with a 9-5 record.

Virtus edged out Dubai 79-78 after Luca Vildoza hit the game-winning  3-pointer and then made a crucial steal with only a few seconds left on the clock on the Italian side’s return to their favorite gym. Dubai set the tone early on as the visitors raced into a 2-7 lead early on, but Virtus hit back instantly as Derrick Alston got the hosts going with 8 quick-fire points which turned the first quarter on its head as Virtus surged ahead 26-13. Dubai closed the gap to 26-17 at the end of the first quarter and then completed a 0-16 run to nose ahead 26-29 early in the second, making it a proper rollercoaster as the visitors kept chipping away to take a 39-44 advantage into the locker room at halftime. The matchup got physical and Dubai took a 54-56 lead into the final 10 minutes after a low-scoring third quarter, as both teams beefed up on defense. The see-saw battle kept fans on the edge of their seats down to the wire and Vildoza settled the rip-roaring contest as he hit nothing but net for the game-winning basket before he pickpocketed Filip Petrusev to deny the visitors inside Virtus Arena.

Carsen Edwards paced the home team on 23 points, Vildoza and Alston chipped with 11 apiece while Matthew Morgan added 10. Justin Anderson led Dubai on 16 points as Aleksa Avramovic and Kenan Kamenjas scored 13 each.

Real improved to 8-6 in the standings while Efes dropped to 5-9. Efes led 67-65 with 7 minutes remaining but Real locked in on defense, using a 5-16 run to get another win.

Mario Hezonja led the winners with 22 points. Trey Lyles added 11 while Chuma Okeke had 10, all in the third quarter, for Real. Rolands Smits led Efes with 21 points, matching his career-high effort. Ercan Osmani added 18 on 4-of-4 three-pointers, Rodrigue Beaubois had 11 on his EuroLeague return after missing eight consecutive games, while Isaia Cordinier got 10 for the hosts. Walter Tavares became the first player to reach 500 EuroLeague blocks but also went scoreless for the first time in 256 games, having last done so on October 24, 2019.

Walker finished with 23 points, Jaylen Hoard posted 16 points and 9 rebounds and Iffe Lundberg added 10 points for the winners. Sylvain Francisco paced Zalgiris with 13 points and 7 assists, but was 0 for 7 from downtown as he saw a streak of 35 consecutive games with a three-pointer made come to an end. Zalgiris lost its second home game all season in falling to 8-6, while Maccabi claimed its second road win in climbing to 4-10.

Monaco smoked Paris with a 125-104 win on Thursday night, making this the third week in succession that Vassilis Spanoulis’s men have made history. After breaking its own record for margin of victory in each of the last two rounds, Monaco set a new club record with 125 points scored, which is the third-highest total in EuroLeague history. Even more impressive is the fact it came without any need for overtime. Monaco improved to 9-5 with this win, its third in a row, while Paris dropped its third straight to fall to 5-9.

The three-headed monster of Elie Okobo, Matthew Strazel and Mike James ran the show for Monaco. Okobo finished with 26 points and 8 assists, Strazel had 22 points and 7 dimes, while James posted 16 points and 7 helpers. Nikola Mirotic also added 14 points, and Alpha Diallo poured in 10 points. Paris guard Justin Robinson paced his team with 24 points, followed by Jared Rhoden with 22 and Nadir Hifi with 17.

Despite trailing by 15, ASVEL made a buoyant run to shrink the lead heading into halftime, before putting together an incredible third-quarter rally to take the lead. There were then six lead changes as the teams went blow-for-blow. ASVEL were able to grow its lead to 11 early in the fourth, but the hosts plugged away to stay in the fight. With minutes to go, Hapoel went on a 7-0 run to claw its way back into the game. Nando De Colo and Dimitris Itoudis picked up technical fouls as the game became chippy, but Hapoel’s key hustle plays saw it secure the victory.

Dan Oturu played the starring role for Hapoel, adding 7 boards to his 18-point scoring performance. Antonio Blakeney and Johnathan Motley also bolstered their team with 16 points each. The result was especially tough on the excellent Nando De Colo, who kept his team in the clash until the very end, recording 20 points in the loss. Strengthening its position atop the league table, Hapoel moved to 10-4 with the win. ASVEL, meanwhile, slid to 3-11.

Tyrique Jones followed suit with 21 and 10 rebounds. Spencer Dinwiddie led all scorers with 25 points, with Vladimir Lucic bagging a season-high 17 points. Johannes Voigtmann registered 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds in defeat.

We were talking about this game a lot, how we need to play and be focused on basketball, on things that Bayern is doing on defense and offense. And somehow in the second half, things started to work much better than in the first.”

What changed after the break was Partizan’s hustle mentality on both ends of the floor. The hosts ended the game with 14 offensive rebounds and forced as many as 17 turnovers, earning extra valuable possessions that translated into 20 points off Bayern errors.

On the offensive end, Washington scored 22 points and distributed 6 assists in just under 18 minutes. For his part, Jones went 9 for 11 from inside the arc for a season-high 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete his third double-double of the season, with Partizan clinching a 92-85 victory. The two men also produced magic on multiple occasions, with Jones making the most of Washington’s dishes to work his way onto the highlight reel.

“I’m just proud of us,” Washington said after the game. “We stuck together. We fought. We needed this really bad. We went out there and did what we had to do.”

Partizan kicked off the post-Obradovic era with its fifth win of the season – a victory that will serve as a boost in morale ahead of the upcoming derby against high-flying Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet Belgrade. In a 125-104 win over Paris Basketball, AS Monaco set a new club record for points scored and also set a EuroLeague record for the most points scored in a non-overtime game.

[AS Monaco](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/as-monaco/mco/) entered the mini break flying.

After setting new club records for margin of victory in back-to-back rounds, [defeating LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne by 32](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/news/monaco-keeps-its-foot-on-the-throttle-en-route-to-record-night/) before [downing Anadolu Efes Istanbul by 36](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/news/monaco-breaks-club-history-again-in-beatdown-of-efes/), Monaco came into its Round 14 clash with Paris Basketball in buoyant mood. Even more so after eliminating Paris from the French Cup just two days prior.

If that last-16 tie was a high-scoring affair, with Monaco triumphing 109-103, their EuroLeague meeting on Thursday night was historic as the Monegasques romped to a 125-104 victory over the capital club.

You guessed it – Monaco made history once again, this time with the 125 points it dropped.

That beat the club’s previous best mark of 112 points, which came in a 107-112 overtime win at Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv in Round 11, and it is the third-highest tally all-time in the EuroLeague. Only the 130 and 126 points scored by Real Madrid and Anadolu Efes Istanbul, respectively, in their famous quadruple-overtime battle in 2023-24 are superior to Monaco’s 125.

Unlike that Real Madrid and Efes game, however, Monaco didn’t require overtime, making this the highest-scoring mark by a team in a non-overtime game. Before Thursday night, that honor was shared by Maccabi and Panathinaikos Athens, which had netted 123 points apiece – now the joint fourth-most points all-time. Maccabi reached that number in a 123-73 win over Pesaro in 2004-05, then Panathinaikos did so in an 83-123 victory at Chorale Roanne in 2007-08. Curiously, 17 of Panathinaikos’s points in that game came from Vassilis Spanoulis, who is now the coach of Monaco.

“We were very focused,” Coach Spanoulis told EuroLeague TV after Monaco downed Paris. “After the first quarter we played very good defense, and we had huge pace on offense to find the open player and be unselfish. We played very good basketball.”

One of the keys to Monaco’s historic night at Salle Gaston Medecin was the play of its three-headed monster in the backcourt – [Mike James](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/mike-james/005985/), [Elie Okobo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/elie-okobo/011212/) and [Matthew Strazel](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/matthew-strazel/008099/). James enjoyed two milestones of his own, too, moving past Spanoulis into fourth place all-time in assists, and becoming the first player in EuroLeague history to score 5,500 points. But after his 32-point night in the French Cup, he played more of a withdrawn role in Round 14.

Instead, it was Okobo who really led the team on Thursday night. He finished with a season-best 26 points and 8 assists, in addition to 4 rebounds and 3 steals, good for a career-high 39 PIR. His +32 in the plus/minus column said everything about his performance.

“I just try to be efficient and better every single game I play,” Okobo said in his post-game comments. “Just play with the rhythm and the pace the game is giving me, and be efficient when I try something. It was good today. But the most important was the team, and everybody was impactful.”

James ended the night with 16 points and 7 dimes, while Strazel made a career-best 6 three-pointers en route to 22 points, in addition to dishing 7 assists. For the French guard, he was happy with Monaco’s scoring but wants to see his team make it a lot more difficult for the opposition to score.

“We want to play a little better defense,” Strazel said. “We like to keep the opponents under 70 \[points\] – that’s the goal, especially at home.”

Next up for Monaco is the visit of Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in a repeat of last season’s EuroLeague Championship Game. Given how Coach Spanoulis’s team is playing at the moment, that game should be appointment viewing for basketball fans right across the globe.

Clearly, the head coach has a NSFW message for his team that he doesn’t seem suitable for broadcast, which isn’t surprising given the nature of the victory. His league-leading team came back from 11 down, with a stunning 17-0 run in the final 6 minutes to regain the advantage. Eventually, they escaped with the 87-80 win.

Due to Hapoel’s position atop the standings and ASVEL’s place at the bottom, the hosts came into the game as clear favorites. However, that wasn’t evident in this contest, with the visitors putting up a strong fight and almost getting over the line before the aforementioned collapse.

Despite coming into the game with a 9-4 record, Hapoel had a point to prove after a disappointing loss to Real Madrid last time out. Though it will be pleased to increase its win total to double figures, the nature of the hard-fought battle will be cause for concern. Hapoel will have a chance to address that next week when it faces Virtus Bologna.

Meanwhile, the now 3-11 ASVEL will hope to recover from the disheartening fourth-quarter collapse when it faces Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv next Thursday.

[Lonnie Walker](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/lonnie-walker-iv/013403/) returned to Zalgirio Arena in style, powering [Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/maccabi-rapyd-tel-aviv/tel/) to a stunning 65–83 road win over his former team, [Zalgiris Kaunas](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/zalgiris-kaunas/zal/), on Thursday night. Walker erupted for a game-high 23 points, including a personal 10-point run in the second quarter that put Maccabi firmly in control. Few would have predicted such a lopsided outcome before tipoff.

Maccabi, which entered the game with the second-worst defense in the EuroLeague, flipped the script by holding Zalgiris to a season-low 65 points — 13 fewer than its previous low. The victory was Maccabi’s biggest in Kaunas since a 102–75 triumph in November 2004 and marked Zalgiris’s worst home defeat since a 51–73 loss to CSKA Moscow more than four years ago.

“There are a lot of good things to take from this game, but I have to be honest. We know basketball: It was one of those days,” Maccabi head coach Oded Kattash said. “Zalgiris missed a lot — layups, open shots. We were lucky today. We were on the good side of the luck.”

Luck or not, Maccabi will gladly take the momentum. The win lifted its record to 4–10, and next week the team will play its first true home game since October 2023 when it hosts LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne in Tel Aviv.

Walker, who showed appreciation for his former team and Zalgiris fans, expressed optimism about Maccabi’s future:

“We’re a heck of a team, even though our record doesn’t show it. I think we’re going to consistently climb that ladder. We showed grit and grind, especially in the third quarter, limiting them to about 15–16 points. We have so much talent to show and the best is still yet to come.”

After a [Moses Wright](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/moses-wright/012878/) free throw gave Zalgiris a 9–8 lead midway through the first quarter, the hosts never led again. Maccabi forward [Oshae Brissett](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/players/o-shae-j-brissett/014127/) credited the team’s mindset:

“We came out knowing things needed to change. We had to play harder and that’s all it was. We didn’t wait for them to hit us first — we hit them first and didn’t look back.”

It was a disappointing loss for the home team, which suffered its second home loss and slipped to 8-6 for the season. Despite the disappointment, Zalgiris fans showed love for Walker after the game—and he returned the sentiment:

"I love (the Zalgiris fans) to death. Endless support, endless love, even after leaving, and whatnot, has been tremendous. Zalgiris will forever be in my heart," Walker said.

"I've got a lot of love for the city of Kaunas and for Zalgiris… To welcome me in with open arms (last season), understanding what I had and what my thought process was, it was a very unselfish act, and I'm in great, great, great debt, to Zalgiris. I'm always going to bleed green and white."

Real Madrid, led by Mario Hezonja and Usman Garuba, had to battle hard to beat Anadolu Efes Istanbul 75-81 at the Turkcell Basketball Development Center.

[Real Madrid](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/) had to battle hard to beat [Anadolu Efes Istanbul](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/euroleague/teams/anadolu-efes-istanbul/ist/) 75-81 at the Turkcell Basketball Development Center. It was *Los Blancos*' third consecutive win after edging Zalgiris Kaunas 100-99 at home and stopping Hapoel IBI Tel Aviv 74-75 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Those three close wins lifted Real Madrid's record to 8-6.

It was not easy. Real struggled to score early and trailed 17-15 at the end of the first quarter. [Mario Hezonja](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/mario-hezonja/003108/) limited the damage by scoring his team's 10 opening points to put Real ahead, 9-10. Even when the rest of the team combined for 2 of 9 on three-pointers in the first half (22.2% 3FG), Hezonja buried 2 of his 3 attempts (66.7% 3FG) to keep Real within 41-37.

Hezonja finally got some help from [Chuma Okeke](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/chuma-okeke/014006/), who had all 10 of his points in the third quarter. Hezonja was also all over the place, reaching double digits in a quarter for the second time in the game. Both players combined for 20 of Real's 23 points in the third quarter, giving Real a 59-60 lead.

Early in the third quarter, [Walter Tavares](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/walter-tavares/005791/) became the first player in EuroLeague history to reach 500 blocks. It was a really quiet night for him on the offensive end, going scoreless for the first time in 256 games. With Tavares on the bench, and given the fact that [Rolands Smits](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/rolands-smits/007109/) and [Ercan Osmani](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/ercan-osmani/012710/) were bringing him out of the paint with their three-point shots, Real Madrid coach [Sergio Scariolo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/teams/real-madrid/mad/scariolo-sergio) tried [Usman Garuba](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/usman-garuba/007630/) at center for the best part of the fourth quarter – and it ended up being the key to this game.

Garuba checked back in when Efes got its last lead, 67-65, and he did not need to shoot the ball in order to make a difference. Garuba blocked three shots, switching the game's momentum with one on Osmani's dunk attempt, in addition to grabbing four defensive rebounds in the last six minutes. 

He helped Real go on a game-deciding 5-16 run in which [Gabriel Deck](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/gabriel-deck/009005/) and [Trey Lyles](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/trey-lyles/014117/) took center stage on offense. Garuba was everywhere on defense and Efes started to struggle. The hosts missed nine consecutive shots until Osmani buried a three-pointer to bring Efes within 72-74. Once [Facu Campazzo](https://www.euroleaguebasketball.net/en/euroleague/players/facundo-campazzo/005928/) answered from downtown and found Deck for a backdoor layup, the game was over.

"I think we played a very good second half, defensively especially. Also offensively, we found the right way to attack people who were in foul trouble. We turned the rebounding account upside down. We were down in the first half and got way more rebounds in the second, and some of them were really crucial," Coach Scarolo said. "Obviously we got the advantage of looking for different lineups, small lineups, Usman Garouba at the five, having different situations which definitely helped us tactically, but I think that the team played with heart in the second half. We really stepped on the floor with the desire to win."

In other words, Hezonja kept Real in the game and Garuba allowed *Los Blancos* to maximize their chances to win down the stretch. Hezonja finished the game with 22 points and has been unstoppable of late, getting 19 against Hapoel and averaging 22.0 in two games with the Croatian national team.

"I think we picked it up defensively. We got very important stops on the defensive end, and I think we found very good chemistry in the third quarter, which let us separate a little bit from them. And then, of course, the guys did a great job in the fourth quarter," Hezonja said. "A lot of us came back from our national teams, but we stick to what we do good. Coach and the staff prepared the game very well, and we are continuing to win games, which is the most important."
