Karim Jallow produced the finest game of his EuroCup career on Wednesday to spark ratiopharm Ulm to a come-from-behind victory over Umana Reyer Venice.
Jallow energized Ulm's comeback
ratiopharm Ulm went into halftime against Umana Reyer Venice a frustrated team looking for answers. Karim Jallow came out of the break ready to provide a spark - and Ulm carried that to an impressive rally and victory.
Ulm trailed by 23 points in the opening minute of the second half, but allowed just 34 points after halftime in a 90-83 come-from-behind overtime win at home. Jallow played a major role in the comeback, scoring 11 of his 18 points in the third quarter while also grabbing 7 rebounds and 3 steals for an index rating of 23. All four of those statistics set career-highs for the 24-year-old German forward, who had scored 15 points combined in Ulm’s first two EuroCup games this season.
After scoring just 3 points in the first half, the athletic Jallow started to take over things in the third quarter. He had a steal and big dunk and followed that with a layup and added two more baskets as the deficit was trimmed to 39-54. But he also was working hard defensively, aggressively defending Reyer’s scorers who had figured out ways to find open shots throughout the first 20 minutes.
After taking a quick breather, Jallow came back and immediately drained a three-pointer before sinking 2 free throws to make it 57-64 after three quarters. He had less impact on the game in the fourth quarter and almost handed over the win to Reyer as he committed a turnover with 12 seconds left in regulation, only to see the visitors unable to convert.
In overtime, Jallow came up with a big steal and layup to give Ulm an 8-point cushion with 74 seconds left and assisted on a big dunk by Cristiano Felicio with 19 seconds to play to secure the win for good.
Jallow was not the only player who stepped up in the second half. It was a full team effort. But Jallow’s mix of aggressive defending and getting to the basket was a major boost in Ulm’s improbable comeback.
